Kanye West

Recently downloaded his albums, and they're pretty good. He definitely flows, and the music is a lot better then most other rap. There are a few songs on Late Registration I always skip, because they're too annoying for me. He best songs are the ones where he collaborates with artists that you wouldn't expect to be in a rap song(Daft Punk, the guy from Maroon 5, John Mayer, etc). Sure he's cocky, but as long as he doesn't start singing "this is why I'm hot, you ain't cause you not", I'm cool with it. Anyone else into him? or am i in for a flaming...

A ton of Daft Punk's music relies on samples, even Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. Unlike Kanye, to my knowledge they don't give the people they sample songwriting credits or have them appear in their music videos. If you ask me, Kanye did a lot to make sure they were recognized for their contribution and, if anything, helped introduce Daft Punk to a wider audience.

To me, the fact that Kanye samples bands like Daft Punk that fall outside of "mediocre, simplistic popular music" suggests that he is interested in expanding his own horizons and those of his fans. The guy is constantly tweaking his sound and evolving as an artist, and as far as sampling goes, he probably has one of the most eclectic palates of any hip-hop artist, mainstream or otherwise. By going through his material, I've been introduced to a lot of other really great music.

Just because something is popular doesn't necessarily mean it's simplistic and stupid. Sometimes things are popular because they're legitimately good. Crazy concept, I know.

I know things can be legitimately popular because they are good, how do you think Trent got where he is today?

I'm not against sampling. The difference between Daft and Kanye is that I personally believe Kanye is a fucking douchebag with little creativity contrasted to other rappers and part of the consumerism attitude of today's music...oh, and I just don't like his music. Go figure.

90% of the millions of stupid teenagers that love that song would not like Daft Punk, and do not like Daft Punk. I know that because I've hung around them. Most of them, do not know Daft Punk and believe that Kanye created that song entirely himself. Either way, my opinion stands. You don't have to agree with it.

I agree that Kanye is creative by using the Daft sample, however I do have to agree that it did not necessarily make Daft Punk very well known. I also know a lot of people that thought Kanye made that entire song, not even knowing who Daft is. For me, this is what introduced Daft to me and then I showed it to a lot of my friends.
Most of them, do not know Daft Punk and believe that Kanye created that song entirely himself. Either way, my opinion stands. You don't have to agree with it.

If you don't like him because his music simply doesn't appeal to you aurally, I get that. It's totally subjective. When you say he's part of the "consumerism attitude of today's music", I don't find it exactly clear in what way you think Kanye West is contributing to this. If you mean the content of his music, most of the material he's been putting out over the last few years actually rebels against it. He talks about how wealthy he has become and how he is a consumer himself, living an expensive, decadent lifestyle, but how deeply unsatisfying it all is on an emotional and spiritual level. He's delivering an honest message that there's a void that no amount of money or fame can fill.

Now, if you mean he contributes to consumerism over the way his records are sold, I wouldn't really know what his label does on their end. What I can say though is that it's pretty obvious to me Kanye isn't motivated simply by making money. The guy's not a ringtone artist and like I said, he always seems to be evolving when a lot of other artists who are making bullshit music are perfectly content to spit out the same thing again and again, because it doesn't take a lot of effort and people know it will sell. I also know he gives out a nice amount of free music. Last year he released a track a week, either an exclusive or an early version of something from his upcoming album, for free. By the time Twisted Fantasy came out, he had released enough free material that it could have been released as a second album or at least as B-sides. Some of it was really good shit. It's easy to lump Kanye into that cesspool of bad mainstream music, but I don't think he belongs there.

As a side note, funny you would accuse another artist of perpetuating consumerism when the most recent projects Daft Punk has been involved in was putting themselves into DJ Hero and writing the soundtrack for a Disney film. I mean, I love Daft Punk but you can hardly point to that and say they they didn't do it for the money.

As for your final point, your statistic, "90% of millions of stupid teenagers" is a generalization, as is saying you know this to be true because you're around them. From experience, I know how frustrating it is to be surrounded by, well, idiots. But what I've come to learn is that the people who live in your small town or your circle of influence in no way represent the population of the entire world. I also know from experience how annoying it is to have a favorite artists' work mistaken for another. I remember when Johnny Cash covered "Hurt". A lot of my friends were raving about it and saying how they liked it much more than the "Nine Inch Nails cover of the song". This aggravated me to no end, and I constantly found myself correcting people about it, once during a class presentation a few people were giving about the song. The thing is though, not once did I ever blame Johnny Cash for the problem. It's not like he ever implied the song was his, and as I said earlier, neither did Kanye West in Daft Punk's case. In fact, it seems that he put some effort in to make sure people recognized them. So, I guess what I'm saying is, if you're going to blame anyone for not knowing who DP is, blame the ignorant listeners, not the artist.

As you said, though, you and I are both entitled to our respective opinions.

Alright, so I enjoy the album. Not as amazing as some of the reviews say (*cough* pitchfork *cough*), but it's very solid and probably one of my favorite albums from 2010. The beats are enjoyable and varied, and the lyrics are quite creative. It's much better than a lot of other mainstream rap/hip-hip I've heard. much Another thing I really liked were the collaborations. "All of the Lights" has 11 guest singers I think? Thought that was pretty cool.

"So Appalled" and "Runaway" are my favorites. The only song I don't really care for is "Blame Game" because of the annoying skit at the end and it overall just feels boring to me (though the aphex twin sample was kinda cool).
