CT legislature votes to repeal death penalty

So I think this will make it #18 on the list. It doesn't seem to be retroactive.

I'm all for an eye for an eye. But considering how corrupt our system has become, prosecutors with no humanity in them that send innocent people to death row in order to hit conviction quotas - I cant fathom having a death penalty as a result.

Call me old fashioned but I think if somebody kills somebody else in cold blood they deserve nothing but the death penalty. I think we need to find a more cost effective way to do it, but I'm all for the death penalty. Of course, as HurtNoMore says, it should only be in cases where it can be proven beyond a doubt. But that being said, in those cases, I think that the death penalty should be carried out. After all, even if you incarcerate somebody, there is always the chance of them escaping, or hurting an inmate or employee of the prison (aka guards etc). Plus, I don't see why you should show mercy to a killer who would show no mercy to their victims.

You'are adressing broader issues, and if I were tasked with making cost saving policy, the death penalty would be pretty far down on the agenda. I've listened to "prison system" too, ya know.

But the point remains: it'd be cheaper to blow laugners brains out. Sure, it might be a drop in the bucket, but a penny saved is a penny earned.

I like the idea that there might be potential gains from criminologist research, but realistically, i think that the expected value of that research might be just as likely to be zero or negative (research is expensive).

Cool documentary short about a hangman in Britan (not pro or anti death penalty).
I'm not interested cases where there is even an arguement about guilt. A jury get's to decide, as they do now in some states in a penalty phase, but with a much stricter criteria.

In extreme cases i'm really not interested in motive either:

Take Laughner, the dude who shot Rep. Giffords. There is 0 doubt about his guilt. He should be destroyed like a rabid dog. I know he's insane. But there are many better places for society to spend it's rescourcs then housing him and\or fighting his appeals.

Convict him. Shoot him at dawn the next day. Adios. The money saved can be spent on making sure the next Laughner gets treatment BEFORE he starts posing with his Glock in a thong.

Falkor's points aside, incarcerating murderers provides criminologists an ample pool of research subjects. There is something to be gained there.

I also believe you are grossly overstating the cost of incarcerating murderers, especially those of Laughner-like notoriety. They are few and far between. If you're serious about cutting costs, you'd be less concerned with murderers and more concerned with inner city youth tossed into the can for buying or selling pot.

Cost considerations aside, there's an inherent problem with that reasoning. A conviction by a jury of one's peers already means guilty by the evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. If there's a doubt, they aren't supposed to convict. If there's no doubt, there's no problem. However, who's going to decide what "no doubt" means except the jury? A judge? The press? The President of the United States?
