Help Me Buy a Gift for my Boyfriend

His job recently began requiring a lot of travel, which is keeping him away from the studio. He has his laptop and a very small Akai, but I want to get him something else to help him create while away. Sanity is important after all.

This is when I should tell you I literally know nothing about writing music or the technology, so yea... I need help :S

I looked around a bit, saw the Korg Kaossilator Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer, and got confused. Is this just a toy or is it useful? It seems limiting since he can't add sounds to it. Is there something similar in portability, but more versatile?

Any ideas or suggestions would are greatly appreciated. I would love to drop a grand on this, but I have keep it within about $200.

Thank You!

Well, I squeezed another $100 out of my budget & got him the deluxe GDT set instead, & it will be a Valentine's Day gift since it's not shipping until Feb 6th.
Thank you for the ideas though, definite food for thought for our anniversary :)

He might enjoy a Korg Monotron (which also looks like a toy, but is quite nice). Or if you can squeeze another $50 into your budget, the Monotribe, which is larger and includes drums.

There's also the Meeblip synth, but they're not available at the moment.
