I'm referring to the great (sometimes techno) music last night in Santa Barbara before SSSC took the stage..

Who are the bands/artists?

One song I thought I recognized a sample of Underworld...

I'd really like to know some of the songs as well! Anyone know the current list?

05/30/09 8:56 AM

Posting in this beotch because I'm interested in staying up to date on these as well, and it at least shows up in my posted threads thing in my profile. I really need to expand my own music collection, and have generally liked everything I've heard at NIN's preshows.

05/31/09 9:44 AM

Last night I know I heard:

The Horrors - Sea Within a Sea
Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
HEALTH - Die Slowly
Queens of the Stone Age - 3s & 7s? (I know it was from Era Vulgaris, but can't remember if this is the right track)

That's all I can remember for now.

05/31/09 2:09 PM

I definitely heard Amanda Palmer's "Leeds United" before the show at Chicago.

06/10/09 11:21 AM

What was some of the music they played before the show and during band changes, I remember hearing one TV on the Radio song.

06/10/09 1:29 PM

I will try to help you, even if I'm not sure about song titles in some cases (don't remember with all music coming in my way, honestly).

I've attended three shows (Chicago, Clarkston and Toronto) but I was backstage in Michigan so this is what I heard in Chicago and Toronto (same music as far as I remember).

Phoenix - Lisztomania
Peter, Bjorn and John - Nothing To Worry About
Grizzly Bear - Cheerleader (or Two Weeks?)
The Horrors - Sea Within a Sea
Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw
The Jesus and the Mary Chain - (song from an album I haven't discovered)
Hercules And Love Affair - (feat Antony Hegarty) - Blind
Health - Die Slow

more songs but I can't remember them all, incl:

+ a cool beat (a lot of energy) between SSSC and NIN that I really want to know the title of. I have no idea there.

Wow! That song was not played at the shows I attended. Or, you are just makin' fun of me because of my avatar =)

The Fall - What you need
Talking Heads - Born Under Punches

have been some of my personal favs. over the years

06/12/09 8:45 AM

There was a popish r&b sounding song played at Camden, Holmdel and Columbia. Sounded kind of like Prince...anyone have any idea of the song I am speaking of? Overall I enjoyed the pre-show and in-between music selection, even though I recognized almost none of it.

no i'm not makin fun. i attended camden, holmdel, wantagh and heard the song at least at 2 of those shows.. i guess not many recognized it, cos it's a very quiet/calm song.

There is one song I heard and loved and can't remember what it is. I've heard it before, seen the band live, I just don't know!

It was kind of slow paced but I can't remember any lyrics. The one distinct thing is there are these very high-pitched "blangs!" made by guitar or synth at the end of the song done about four or five times. Sorry for no description...thanks for any help!

Oh! And it was played RIGHT after NIN in Holmdel, NJ but before SSSC in Clarkston and Camden.

EDIT: NEVERMIND! It was Health! I KNEW I had heard it before! God they were my first guess too....

Once again, a great mix of pre-show music. I was very pleased to hear "No One Does It Like You" by Department of Eagles. Great stuff.

cool! i'm still in the us but can't wait to get back to see her at the same festival as NIN + another festival later in the summer (with grizzly bear, MBV, wilco, the bronx etc...)

Ok, this is going to sound like I'm crazy, but I had a song stuck in my head for a couple weeks after the WPB show, and couldn't figure out where I had head it UNTIL I was standing and waiting for NIN at the Charlotte show. All I can describe about the tune is that it is a lower man's voice, and the tune was "dancy". The lyrics also included "Feelin".

HEEEEEELP MEEEEEE.
This is seriously driving me CRAZY!

Jesus and Mary Chain......

One of the Jesus and Mary Chain songs played this tour was was "Birthday" off their Munki (and last studio) album. A song which actually has a sample from their very EARLY single "Just Like Honey" mentioned above in another post.
I also heard "I hate Rock and Roll" which is off the same album.
Im not sure if there was another or if I just heard one 2 times one night.

But GODDAMN you people should check them out. Good classic stuff. Remember, Jesus and Mary Chain was one of the first major bands to have NIN open for them before Lollapalooza.

Anyone that likes A Place To Bury Strangers (opened for NIN during LITS) needs to hear Jesus and Mary Chains first album Psychocandy. And if you want to try out this band - All albums are good but Honeys Dead is my favorite.

Theres a reason they didnt get a lot of radio play - though Head On and Sometimes Always got a lot of play. That reason is cause they were TOO GOOD for the mainstream.

crap, I just noticed they did a song in Heroes that I dont even have.

one of the coolest bands that ever lived. Influenced a lot of the noisy pop/rock stuff that came later.

Its pretty cool that now those two songs "I hate Rock and Roll" and "Birthday" now remind me of waiting for NIN to play.

I've listened a lot to Automatic and Psychocandy and they are indeed a band worth to check out.

However, I like to discover legendary artists slowly so as long as I enjoy those two records, I don't see the need to listen to the rest. I will listen to Honeys Dead next ;-)

And yeah, while talking about noisy rock... My Bloody Valentine!!! Will see them in the end of the summer, can't wait!

Thank god! I knew it was his vocals, but I never would have gotten the other band.

thought Id add links. This was one of the JAMC songs played before the show.
Also to note, Alan Moulder - who has mixed MOST of the NIN stuff, also did all these guys' stuff.

I hate Rock and Roll
[new.music.yahoo.com]

Cant find anything that plays "Birthday" so I decided to just posts some good old ones that I COULD find:

Never Understand
[www.youtube.com]
Far and Gone Out
[music.aol.com]
Sugar Ray
[www.youtube.com]

classic early punk JAMC interview footage!!!
"because we're so good......" - they were never the humble bunch
if you can actually understand what hes saying - its hilarious.

now go buy their stuff!

I saw them here in Hollywood just a month or so ago. Had no idea till the next day that Trent Reznor was actually AT the show in the audience somewhere.
They were fantastic!!!
(Alan Moulder did their stuff too)

bring earplugs (though they handed them out at the door)

I have to say I have been watching this thread ever since I saw NIN last December in Vegas I was truly inspired by that show and the pre show music definitely added to the experience. I remember saying to a friend at the show just how cool I thought the music was that was playing. Some of it I had such as Bowie, The Cure, The Clash, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Gary Numan and Roxy Music but a lot of it I didn't have. I have spent the last six months buying a lot of the music of the list and I have to say I have discovered a lot of great new bands and in some cases they are just new to me.

The inspiration from the show will be revealed by me in the near future but I have to say if you enjoyed the pre-show music it is definitely worth your time to track down this music for your personal library. I don't regret the money I spent in the least.

06/21/09 6:26 PM

not that it matters ALL that much, but I think the Jesus and Mary Chain I said that was played "I hate Rock and Roll" was actually the song "I LOVE Rock and Roll". Still on the same last album Munki but 2 different songs.

now go buy the album!!!

06/25/09 8:00 AM

Does anybody know this song (only bassline in this video) - it played before Alec Empire [www.youtube.com]

I need to know! Thanks.

06/26/09 2:56 AM

^ nvm, it's Scarlet Fields by The Horrors, from their awesome new album Primary Colours.

07/03/09 1:15 PM

I remember hearing the following songs at the show in Düsseldorf:

The Horrors - Scarlet Fields
The Horrors - I Only Think of You
The Horrors - I Can't Control Myself (unsure, but there have been 3-4 tracks of them)
Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
HEALTH - Die Slowly
Franz Ferdinand - ulysses
Queens of the Stone Age - Turning on The Screw
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Nine Million Rainy Days
Interactive-Dildo (I'm not sure about the version/remix)
