How To Enjoy General Admission

10/07/08 3:25 PM

Hey fellow NIN bretheren, I'm going to the Nashville show and it will be my 1st NIN concert (apart from their show at Lollapalooza which doesn't really count). I was hoping some of you would have tips that might benefit me and others, and help us to have the most enjoyable general admission experience possible. Preferably tips about being in the front close to the stage near the center. Also, would around 4:30 or 5 for an 8:00 show be enough to get reasonably close, and be able to easily work my way to the front during the opening act?

To get really close you need to get there early. Some people got there at like 7 a.m. which is a bit excessive to me. I arrived at like 3:30 for a 7:00 show and also got right up by the rail.

What Cassie said, plus:

Drink water while you're waiting.
Pee before they let general admission in.
Exchange email addies with the people in line with you so you can exchange show photos.
Don't wear a coat.
If you're going to buy a t-shirt, don't wear a shirt to the show or wear one you can throw away, then wear the t-shirt you buy.
Wear comfortable shoes/boots.
Be nice to the people around you.
Ignore the assholes.
Don't shout during the quiet songs.

That's off the top of my head. I'm sure other people will have other suggestions.

Don't text during the show, unless it's to send yourself the setlist.

lots of ideas in Live Show Ettiquette: Discussion

I'll be at the Nashville show on Halloween as well!

- Be sure to let go of any personal bubble you have around you
- For this show specifically, don't talk loudly during the Ghosts set. It annoyed me how many people were doing that. It's like they don't know what to do when they're not listening to a head-banging song
- Stay alert for any crowdsurfers. I didn't while I was filming at the Houston show this year and I got crushed by some chick. In fact, I'll show you

NIN - Closer - Houston, TX

It's right around the 2:29 mark when Alessandro is going into The Only Time breakdown.

Wear comfortable shoes and, if your shoes have shoelaces, tie them with a tight double-knot (I almost lost my shoe in the pit....)

Forget about cute clothes; they'll get destroyed...

Go for contact lenses instead of glasses.

Avoid jewellery/accessories that can get stuck to your neighbour... My blouse got caught in a girl's belly button ring! She really could have been injured! Now, that was a bit too close for comfort!

Even if beer is good, I avoid drinking it during shows. Having "to go" in the middle of the show would be a bugger...

Take accidental injuries as accidents and not as provocations - accidents do happen in there.

I respect my fellow concergoers but I also demand a minimum of respect.

Sing/dance/jump your heart out, but avoid your neighbour's feet!

If you are going for the rail I think the best spot is beside Robin Fink. Fink is a blast to watch, Trent tends to spend more time in that area or the middle. The downside to front and center is the amount of crowd surfing that happens. If that does not bother you then dead center is of course for you but for those who would rather not have more then 2-4 people land on them then just off to the side is a better spot.

My tips from experience:

1. Drink water before hand, your throat will get dry
2. Do not put ANYTHING on the floor, even if you think you have it guarded. It will be lost during heavier mosh pits.
3. Get into the music. Sing along, dance, get a good feel of your experience.
4. No shouting during quiet songs.
5. Wear comfortable shoes, you're going to be on your feet for two hours straight.
6. Enjoy the show! Being on the floor at a NIN concert is such an amazing experience, enjoy it. My only regret after the last NIN show I was at was that it ended and I had to go back to normal life until next tour, *sigh*

Expect to have people rolling on you. Expect to get squished. Expect to over-heat. Expect to ,if your a guy(hope to) have your ass grabbed, if your a girl, guard your ass(cause if your hot it will be grabbed) and I dont practice that. Expect to get tired of standing (that is if your not dancing,if your dancing, you wont notice). Expect to have at leat 100 other people or more sweat on you,MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Otherwise, ENJOY !! Oh, and dont cry, IT'S GA !!!Survival of the fittest !

Watch out for the kick to the face from crowd surfers, front row always gets it the worse.
Try to use the bathroom relatively close to when the doors open, cause once they do, that is probably the last chance you are going to get to go without loosing your spot.
Something, like a sweat shirt is nic to use for comfort up against the barrier, I just recently learned how great having that is at a Children Of Bodom show.
Have fun

I've always bought general admission tickets, and then hop over the barrier.

the only time it didn't work for me was at the 8.27 NIN show.

I should do the sweatshirt thing...i never remember to, and then i start to feel it about 20 mins into a set. I'm not too fond of crowd surfers. I once got kicked straight in the head and bled throughout the entire Devildriver show earlier this year where i live.

Also please SHOWER ! It's ok if u live home with 19 cats all by your lonlesome. At a show real people will be near you.

They don't do it on purpose but I'll admit, when I get hit particularly hard I'll throw a punch or if I can just throw them onto the ground in front of the barricade, It's just like a natural response, I usually feel somewhat bad afterwards

I almost got knocked out at a show, because some kid was swinging his arms and his fist came within 3 centimeters of my face...

It happened so fast I was paralyzed.eye popping smiley

-If you're on the barricade, watch for the bouncers to signal when a crowd surfer is coming overhead and get ready. Stash your camera and get your arms up if need be.
-Watch your head at all times.
-Guys: If you're over 6' tall, don't try and squeeze the 5' chicks off the barricade. You can see just fine and the girls will appreciate the extra protection.
-If you don't want anyone's sweat getting on you, STAY THE FUCK OUT OF THE PIT!
-If someone falls, pick them up. If they need out, help get them out.
-If you bring a jacket, tie it around your waist.
-Don't throw shit onstage. Unless it's a bra. Or underwear. Then it's usually funny. But be sure not to throw it onstage during the quiet songs.
-Beer does not keep you hydrated. Water is your best friend.

Wear cargo pants, and keep everything in those pockets.Unless you plan on crowd surfing then leave everything in the car or with a friend. Expect to leave soaking wet. Expect surprise boners (yours or someone elses. I learned this at the atlantic city show). Don't be scared to act like an asshole if someone is trying to pull you away to get up front, reciprocate. And if you want to avoid all this, then stay on JMJ's side where it seems to be the most calm. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY,expect to have the best time of your life. Sing, dance, jump whatever. This is totally acceptable behavior. I swear.

Actually, when I saw NIN in Minneapolis, the bouncers were encouraging people to send crowdsurfers away from dead center. They would point up, then motion either left or right to tell the crowd the direction to send the person so they could be safely brought down and out of the pit.

Amen to the cargo pants. If I buy a shirt I usually manage to roll it up to fit in the leg pocket. Means I can buy the merchandise beforehand (if available) _and_ have a change of shirt smiling smiley
