Aggressive vs. Mellow crowds, which is better?

I don't really move around or anything much,javascript:editor_tools_handle_hr() partly because I'm probably taping the show, but I could care less what other people are doing, as long as they aren't interfering with my experience. ie. constant inane chatter during quiet parts, loud obnoxious offkey singing, etc. Like seriously. Shut the fuck up during shit like Hurt. shut. up.

I'd say an aggressive crowd is probably best as long as they know to cool it during slower songs.

Mellow crowds are BORING. It's kind of hard for a band to feed off crowd energy when there isn't any.

01/03/09 10:11 PM

I don't do pit because I don't want to get crushed or whatever, but I'd like to see them up close without the threat of getting violated by some (or many) douche bag(s).

Leaning towards aggressive but not over the top everyone-trying-to-kill-each-other aggressive. Crowds that are too mellow blow.

good stuff. Just to clarify - I meant to talk about floor/GA entirely, not floor/GA vs. seats. I think seats are for people who came with their parents.

XTRMNTR I think the timing is fine, I think most people have had the chance to catch Lights in the Sky (or any NIN tour I suppose) and would have a thing or two to say in retrospect, but I understand that being from Ireland you likely aren't one of those people -.

why? do people from ireland live under rocks or something?

ftr - ive seen nin 3 times (once was even in ireland - imagine the shock of that!)

there's gotta be a middle ground. the band needs a good audience to feed off, but i also wanna hear the band singing, not a thousand people singing extremely badly and screaming out some of the dumbest things i've ever heard - that's what shitty youtube vids of shows are for grinning smiley

01/10/09 1:28 PM

yea i agree with pask on that - as much i love jumping round / dancing / getting into it.
i really wish people would shut the fuck up at times - esp during instrumentals

In Montreal the crowd was fucking nuts, but instead of being those retards that try to get to the front when its not going to happen they just started moshing and ripping each other's skulls off!!!!!!!!!!! the crowd was nuts but there was no pressure on the barrier it was fucking awesome.........everybody had a great time!!!!!

Agreed. While it might be the exception rather than the rule, I've been in very energetic crowds that still managed to be respectful.

Furthermore, I draw a distinction between "aggressive" crowds and just plain homicidal ones--the latter being the sort where people are simply out to inflict as much damage on one another as possible (I've broken bones and drawn blood as a result of these -fine- folks in the past). Sure, in any sort aggressive/energetic crowd I always walk away at the end of the show with quite a few bruises simply due to the fact that accidental collisions are bound to occur when so many people are dancing and rocking out in such close proximity, but it's never been anything serious enough to wreck my impression of the concert as a whole.

I've never been in a crowd that remained mellow for the duration of the show that didn't also come across as largely disinterested, but that's just been my experience and might be related to the types of concerts I tend to attend.

i don't like people. more appropriately, massive crowds of people, so i hate being in a pit. people just aren't my thing really. if i could somehow hover above the pit by way of magic or technology i would, but then i'd just have people pegging shit at me all night. i can't fucking win. bah!

Agreed. I like an energetic crowd. Abusive drunk people pulling, punching, spitting and tugging on you is never any fun. But being crushed and bouncing around with respectful, like minded people is enjoyable. They at least know when to back down and relax a little and when the energy needs to pick up again.

Aggressive, energetic crowds are the best during aggressive, energetic songs.

Shut up during Hurt.

I was on the rail for the Hawaii show, 2007. And on the rail for Hamilton, Nov 08.
Id say, I much enjoyed Hamilton's show. It was rough, but not to the extent that you couldn't watch and enjoy the show. I did attend the Detroit show in '06, where there were seats on the floor. Had 4th row from stage..and yea.. seats and floor and NIN concerts.. NAH..dont work.

Rail in Hawaii, right in front of Trent was brutal. By the time they got to "Great Destroyer" some of us had to leave the rail, just couldn't deal with it. It was still great to be at the rail for as long as we did, but we spent most of the time fighting and pushing people away, than actually watching the band. I had heard stories of rough pits, but that was just crazy.

Hamilton on the other hand, was still "rough" during certain songs, but we managed to stay at the rail the whole time, and actually watch the show. Could it have been that we were in front of Justin instead? :-) Not sure.

I'm thinking the location has alot to do with it. Considering it was AGES since they played Hawaii. I am not sure, just guessing.

But after being on the rail I definately would not want a seat again at a NIN show.

I think energetic crowds are what we all seem to like. Crowds that let the mood of the songs dictate our moods and actions. You need that like-minded energy. Hot and sweaty but all on the same page.

I recently went to a "teen" show with my young daughter. Those little a-holes were the WORST crowd I've ever seen. They kicked, pulled hair, punched people and poked you with stuff. It was horrible! I spent the whole concert trying to defend myself, my daughter and her friends.

i wouldn't say i like aggressive crowds, but i like appropriate behavior. energetic crowds during energetic songs, and people who know how to stfu during quiet songs or otherwise leave if they're bored. i hate obnoxious behavior.

i went to see a band that had energetic songs and the crowd was awesome. one of the best shows i've been to. a few years later i finally got to see them again, and the crowd just stood there the whole time. wtf. i hated it and i didn't enjoy the show.

07/13/09 7:07 PM

i need space to dance and jubilate without smashing my body against another. and yes, i dance rough, but i've never even touched any other guy when i take my place about 20mtr in front of the stage. and i hate assholes who insanely doing the windmill to the line begins to blur, and they're not only doin' it in the pit. go there, and have fun. if i would like to attend the concert this way - i know where to do so.

07/13/09 8:18 PM

Whenever I saw them in Burgettstown the crowd wasn't that bad. Alot of hot girls in front of me were dancing and so was everybody else. I was in the lawn so nothing interesting happen. Except alot of people getting high and stuff.

But anyways I would Agressive crowds cause they show that they really care about there music.

Geez, what does it matter? Chill, stomp, bite, chew, suck. Be yourself and love it. I'm sure applauding would be sufficient in itself but getting sweaty and violent may just be some people's way of letting off steam per se. I enjoy both. I stomped for the duration of my first show last week and didn't remember much of it. Last night I was more attentive and watchful- clearer memories definitely.

07/15/09 5:04 PM

I think aslong as an aggressive crowd can chill it in the slower songs thats the best way. Enthusiastic is the word i'd choose, showing enthusiasm in the fast sonic assault type songs is probably best shown by jumping around moshing dancing etc, the more grinding powerful songs are best shown with nodding heads and arms things like that. Slower more atmospheric pieces are generally accompanied by a lightshow and other atmospherics, applaud clap etc don't talk loudly about your boss's shit new car (im looking at you sweaty middleaged goth chap at manchester MEN during La Mer) And during the ballad type things either sing along or raise a lighter or mobile phone whatever it is these days and enjoy the moment in that regard.

If your moshing during something i can never have you look like a dick, and if your sat arms folded during march of the pigs you again look just as much of a dick.

PS, I think the crowd on the whole at Manchester last night was spot on everybody was there to enjoy it and have an amazing last look at this quality band. I think i perhaps saw one chap who had resorted to taking alot of drugs, drinking alot and had infact donned a set of safety goggles with metallic spikes around the edge, and even he wasn't that bad.

As long as no one gets hurt, I'm cool. smiling smiley I LOVE screaming along with Trent and the crowd and I do it for the entire show. xD

07/31/09 11:26 AM

Note to self .. don't stand next to VBPJ at a NIN show. grinning smiley

Maybe it's me but I think the crowds got live-lier after LITS into the NINJA tour. Those lights zombified a lot of people .. said it before .. Aggressive.

07/31/09 1:06 PM

Depends on what you mean by agressive. Sure, I like to move around and dance, maybe mosh a little, but dealing with intoxicated, lunkhead assholes is not my thing.

My only NIN experience was ruined by badly behaved, boorish fans. I don't know why, but there was a plethora of drunk fratboy and drunk redneck types at this show who were jerks. I was groped - nearly sexually assaulted, was beaten up a bit, and scared for my life as I was being crushed with no way out. I saw this happen to other females as well. I was too busy fighting for my life and dignity to really pay attention to the show. I felt bullied. I never felt that way at a show before and I have been to my fair share of punk and metal shows where I was the only female in the pit.

I'm usually one to mosh a little, but the way things were at this show was SCARY. I just wish people were nicer to each other and realize that you don't need to go around trying to kill people and be a big bully. I somehow don't think Trent would advocate forcing unwanted sexual attention and brutalizing your fellow human.

07/31/09 2:10 PM

I like to people watch and to each their own.

I've gotten hurt in the pit....that wasn't fun. Also, there has been times where I've had first row or unobstructed view and sat down for the most part and enjoyed the show.

Tool actually encourages you to sit back, relax enjoy the show......Nice!

Sounds Of The Underground....where I had gotten hurt....Every Time I Die might address the pit and say something like....clean it up <------ whatever that means? I guess that's nice too.

08/01/09 1:30 AM

I did a rather angry piece about moshing/walls of death/thrashing - things like that - a while back here - [forum.nin.com] -. That's where I stand.

04/11/10 9:31 PM

You don't want the crowds to be so mellow that the show is boring, but you also don't want the crowds to be so aggressive that no one can stand still for little bit and just listen to the music. At least there should be a good mash pit.

04/12/10 5:37 AM

I just like to show up to watch the show and zone out to the tunes. I really do not want some random guy pushing me because he wants to start a mosh pit to "Hurt." Yeah, fuck you assholes who do that on songs that are on the other end of the spectrum.

Overall, I like calm crowds.

04/12/10 9:54 AM

For me? Mellow crowds. But that's because I'm a mellow attendee. When I enjoy the music, I don't dance, I just stay there contently and enjoy despite the fact that I'm CRAZY EXCITED in my head. I don't mind rowdiness, but those fuckers who scream throughout the entire thing need to die in a horrible fire.

04/12/10 1:28 PM

Energic crowds, a middle way. Excited, moving, but not violent. Screaming on songs like Terrible Lie and Head Like A Hole and knowing when it comes a moment in wich you have to SHUT UP and listen. La Mer and Something I Can Never Have for example.

In my only NIN live experience I was lucky, except for a girl who sang EVERY SINGLE WORD on Burn and Gave Up..but It's ok, better on Gave Up than on Fragile or TDTWWA.
