I was raised to NOT wear merch from the band your seeing to their show..

even if i buy a shirt i fold it up and carry it i WILL not wear it.
and sometimes when i see it i kinda laugh in my head

my dad(48yrs) always told me it was poserish to do that..
i have even taught my girlfriend and my little cousin this, and they follow "the code"
some people think im crazy
but most agree
and sometimes when i see it i kinda laugh in my head

Am i crazy?

I dunno, I think it's a personal thing. I wear my stuff - heck, I wear old merch that I bought at this or that concert if they were a particularly good show. When we saw NIN in Houston, my boyfriend wore a shirt I got him when I saw them in Seattle, and I wore a shirt from the last time they played Austin.

To each their own smiling smiley I don't care what I appear as. I just love the music and wanna wear my kewl new NIN-stuff.

For me it is OK to wear them.
But of course- it is even cooler to wear them in front of people who wanted to go to the show but couldn't manage....

it's perfectly fine.i wear my shirts with pride, i even seem to stand a little straighter and hold my head higher while i rock em'. the finger smiley

dont be "that" guy....

09/06/08 11:28 AM

yeah i've always thought that was a no-no too but i think now i just don't care. i made a shirt on spreadshirt that i wore twice during the with_teeth tour. i'm not sure that counts coz its not a band shirt but does reference the band.

see for yourself

.
i've also worn a custom corset made from a nin tshirt to a show. does that count?

then last week at red rocks, it was super chilly so i wore the 1,000,000 sweatshirt. everytime someone walked by wearing it my fiance would cover his face and say 'awkward...' tongue sticking out smiley

edit: i will say that nin is the one band that seems to have the most people wearing their shirts.

I agree with you. I think its a little silly to wear a band shirt to the show (sorry!). Its just not that cool. I laugh a little in my head too when I see it. I will always try to buy the merch after the show but I get so pumped and excited that I just end up leaving empty-handed!!

I've always thought HUGE mistake. I don't do it. I'd much rather rub it in everyone's facs that they weren't at my show.. But I'm a bitch like that. Last show I attended the singer had a shirt with the festival on it. I had to LOL

I don't really care, I just find it kind of redundant. It's like beating a dead horse seeing the same shirt on a thousand different people.

09/06/08 11:08 AM

I think it's cool to see everyone in line branding NIN. I've worn a NIN shirt to a concert b4.

If it feels good then do it!

09/06/08 11:12 AM

I wear my shirt usually after the show when I'm at home going to sleep.

Then after the initiation of wearing it to bed, I wear it almost everyday for about a week.

09/06/08 11:15 AM

I dont sport any band shirt to the show. I always wear a plain black or white T-shirt.
I love dressing in bright clothes , especially if I'm at a goth club or some place where everyone is wearing black.

09/06/08 11:30 AM

When I saw NIN last month I wore a NIN shirt, lots of other people were too. I don't see anything wrong with it.

09/06/08 11:53 AM

I think its kind of silly.

I mean, the way i see it, T-shirts with band, company, or product logo on them are something people wear to show they support them. Considering you are at a show for the band, its pretty obvious you support them - so, why can't you wear another t-shirt to show off what else you like, since we can already assume you like the band you are there to see?

Thats my logic, and im sticking to it.

09/06/08 11:53 AM

Before I went to my first rock concert many moons ago, I also heard that wearing a band's merch to their show is just wrong. so...never did it, never will. I don't know what the reasoning is behind the "rule," but the way I see it, a concert isn't like a football game where people wear their teams' colors to show which team they're supporting. At a concert (except maybe a festival) you can pretty much assume that everyone is there to support the headlining band. But if it makes you happy...wear the damn shirt! winking smiley

Love that movie.

I normally will not wear the band shirt I'm seeing, but I will blast their music full volume with my windows down in the parking lot traffic jam. Sorry, it's just the way I was raised.

I wore the nin shirt I bought at the show during it. I bought them before the show and didn't want to drop them, and felt the need to get rid of my shitty shirt that I wore there (It was a really really horrible article of clothing that i do not regret tossing into the men's restroom trashcan)

I never heard of this "code" to not wear band shirts to a concert, and noticed lots of people wearing tour shirts from self-destruction, fragility, and with teeth that were really cool.

I guess theres some sort of exception to the rule when it comes to wearing shirts from previous tours?

09/06/08 2:15 PM

wear whatever the hell you want. want to wear a NIN shirt, then do it. want to wear a hannah montana shirt, then fucking do it.

the only thing about band shirts that have been looked down on and there's a "rule" about is if you are in a band and you wear your own band's shirts. anything else is fair game.

I have worn a NIN shirt to the two shows I've seen them at.

Plus if we wannt talk merch...at my first show in 2005 I bought the With Teeth military hat and I got the 1,000,000 track jacket at this year's tour.

Agreed. I also have an issue w/ listening to the band heading to the concert and then after the show. Especially after the show...

I'm weird and jaded like that.

09/06/08 2:12 PM

The last time I went to a NIN show I met a girl who'd lost her boyfriend, her exact words were '... well he's got long dark hair and he's wearing a black NIN shirt'...

...there were very few people at the Manchester shows who had an issue with wearing NIN shirts at NIN gigs.

I've never heard of that practice. Perhaps it's a regional thing?

I keep telling people this. Everyone looks at me like I am nuts.

I wore all pink to my last NIN concert.

I've never really cared about "fashion rules" or whatever. I wear white after labor day, my purse never matches my shoes, and if I wanna wear a NIN shirt and a silly pink hat to a NIN show, that's my own business.

Not to mention, 9/10ths of my t-shirts are NIN. Mainly because I only have about 10 t-shirts.

09/06/08 5:54 PM

wearing a well-worn shirt from a previous tour might be okay, but for the same tour, can't imagine doing that...

I think PCU should be played on a loop outside the venue of every NIN show - maybe one by one, fans will start to get the message. hahaha

I strictly adhere to the don't be that guy rule! Oh. and that applies to side projects too. i.e.: it is a violation to wear a modwheelmood shirt on this tour, or the Vandals, or Devo, or whatevs. Don't do it.

09/06/08 5:55 PM

ive worn nin shirts at all gigs ive been to but not a nin gig

09/06/08 7:03 PM

The only time I ever did to any concert was for NIN at Pemberton Fest, because I wanted to show that they were the band I came for :/

Maybe I'll wear my Harajuku Lovers shirt to a DOA (hardcore punk) concert, haha.

I choose not to judge people based on what they wear. Fashion rules? Please, gimme a break.

Personally I try not to wear anything with logos anymore, even logos of things I like. When I buy new shirts/pants I cut the stitches and remove any brand names that have been patched on. The only piece of clothing I have that breaks this rule is a homemade Kraftwerk shirt that a friend gave to me a couple years ago.
