NIN Tours - The Early Years - Your Foggy Memory?

Joined: 11/19/08 Location: Gutterville Posts: 13,815	I was digging thru my old ticket stubs last night and I mind-blowingly ran across Jesus and Mary Chain with Special Guests Nine Inch Nails(Automatic Tour). The show was at a club in Charlotte NC called the 13-13 Club. This was from like 1990 + I was in college at the time. Here is the messed up part. I vaguely recall seeing Jesus and Mary Chain but no memories of NIN. I am racking my brain trying to recall anything of that particular show as I usually remember snippets of long ago shows at least. I'm wondering if NIN even played or was I that messed up or did we get there late? My inclination/feeling is that they didn't play for some reason. So not really an experience for me but lack of ..... it's killing me. Anyone recall NIN cancelling/no-showing gigs in their early years? Jus trying to piece together the puzzle.... Share your memories(or lack there of) if you have any....

Share your memories(or lack there of) if you have any.... Yes! Back in 1990 NIN were opening for Peter Murphy and I went to see them in Providence. Either NIN was unable to perform or dropped from the tour. But there was a lot of milling around for HOURS waiting for the show to start. I might be wrong, but back in the early days weren't NIN really irratic in terms of actually playing gigs? The show I can't recall whether or not I was there was the Friday the 13th show in May of 05. It was the second night at the Orpheum in Boston. I honestly can't remember whether or not I was there. If I was I went with a guy that I couldn't stand, had the worst seats ever, got there late and he wanted to leave early to avoid the crowd. It would've been my first time seeing NIN in over ten years and it would have been such a shit night I would've made sure I didn't remember clearly. Sadly I went and threw away a bunch of old ticket stubs - including some NIN ones. So who really knows!

Is this the show you're talking about? My first NIN show was only in 2005 and I still don't remember shit from that show. :s Even the recent shows don't stick in my mind very well... the details at least.

Or broken who knows, couldn't move well for a few days. Nothing like black and purple bruises across your chest from the rail lol. Seeing David and Trent sing together is something I'll never forget. Also Sanctified was FUCKING awesome live.

That was very cool....

I'm not sure of the exact date/location, but Trent had the longer dreadlocks, was wearing tan coloured cargo shorts. They played pretty much all of PHM, and Queen's "Get down make love". Was cool to watch them back then in a small little club, compared to the more recent tour. They certainly have come a long way. :-)

And they recorded HURT. Well at this particular show I was able to snag Trent's rubber black glove off of his hand when he came down to the crowd by the rail. I quickly placed that glove in my pants and carried on. I still have the glove, OF COURSE. I think it was the Melvins who opened along with Jim Rose Circus, but can't remember right now, my mind is foggy right now.

I think I remember what happened that night long ago when NIN played.(regarding my first post) I took this girl to the show who, of course, I really wanted to ... ya know ... screw. So, we probably arrived late because we were probably partying as we usually did in college and she was probably late from getting ready + all that ... the usual date/party stuff. I shoulda just went to the show and caught back up with her later. Although, she's the one that turned me on to NIN so I can't believe we missed them. It would have been worth passing up a piece of a$$ to catch that show. Damn it ... damn NIN opening ... damn my younger self ... damn my second brain. Someone seriously needs to invent a go back in time button .... I would get there like 5 hours early and tell the chick to meet me there + still bang her. FORK!! Edit: Caught up with referenced chick. We did acid and we did see the show ... I burnt that part of my memory out, I suppose. But yep, we were there... Edited 1 time(s). I recall an unknown Marilyn Manson, Jim Rose Circus, and then seeing the most unbelievable live show in NIN. I didn't realize how awesome a concert could be until I saw that show...

Melvins(and Jim Rose)opened in Dallas, in Feb 95. they taped 'Hurt' for the video.(but for way more than 200 people) they had recently played the same venue back in Oct 94. whit Manson (and Jim Rose) opening. the 94 show was my first, was 2 days before Halloween, i pushed my way to the front for the beginning of Nails' set...as soon as Trent ran onstage, the place went apeshit! people around me were no longer around me! i literally HAD to get out during the first song...i was getting trampled. the greatest part was as i was being pulled out by security, i laid my head back (upside down) and Trent was SCREAMING the song, down right in my face! i can still picture that moment today. for the rest of the show, i found a lone barricade in the back of the floor space, sat atop the barricade, and had a perfect view over everyone's head-of the rest of the show...'Hurt' was great theater back then! I was always curious about where the hurt:live video is from. I've been looking to see where that was filmed, is that the video wigiNINgirl78 mentions? Some friends of mine always wondered if it was at the show we were at since we remembered seeing the t-shirt flying in front on the screen. Really curious about that.

I remember wanting to go see them at Lollapalooza, back in the day, but my parents forbade me because I was only 14. That was a pretty shitty night for me, knowing that NIN was playing near me and I was stuck in my suburban bedroom. I still confuse moments from the first time I saw them at Maple Leaf Gardens (with Marilyn Manson and Jim Rose), and the time I saw them at the same venue during the Fragility tour. I don't miss doing drugs though! Maybe those memories would be more vivid if I never met that one dude.

notudon member Joined: 11/27/07 Posts: 40	I saw NIN in 1990 as the opening band on the Jesus and Mary Chain tour in Tampa, FL. It was an outdoor show at the Ybor Club (I think). I had the single for Down in it, but not Pretty Hate Machine yet. They came out covered in white powder (talcum powder) and sounded OK. Then they had an equipment problem and the set stopped. I remember watching Trent beat the crap out of his equipment and thought to myself, how can an opening band afford to trash their equipment. They eventually got their sound back on and played like they were possessed. The point where I became a fan more so than just a casual listener was when they played Get Down Make Love. Amazing. This was before the Sin single and hearing a classic Queen song re-imagined like that really had an impact. Only down side of the show was J&MC were in mid song when they pulled the plug at 11:00 due to a sound curfew. Skipped NIN opening for Peter Murphy and chose Erasure and Baby Ford that same night. Saw NIN headline in Orlando in the summer of 1990 at Visage. Meat Beat Manifesto opened for them (I believe NIN opened for MBM in 1989 on part of that tour - but not when I saw MBM in Tampa that year). MBM were great live with their costume dancers with the mace / ball and chain flailing at the crowd. NIN went off. It was like watching a demolition crew destroy the stage with their instruments. The stage truss had movie film strips and ropes hanging from them and Trent and crew would swing around on them. I saw then again at Visage in '90 or '91. Lollapalooza in Orlando in 1991 was great. It was NIN's last date on the tour and all the other bands joined them onstage on their last song and everyone destroyed their guitars at the end. That was the tour where NIN vaulted out of the pack and became huge. I remember everyone buying that black NIN shirt with the small white NIN on it. Happy times. The Downward Spiral tour with Manson was another highlight, actually every NIN show is a highlight.
