Worst NIN show experience

What's yours? Here's mine:

I saw Nails back for The Fragile. It was an awesome show. However, like in almost every pit, there's always that asshole who's gotta shit all over your good night. Trent starts playing The Frail and I think "Yay, a break from all the ruckus." Quite the contrary, fools were moshing to this! Not only that, there's this girl in front of me that security is pulling over the rail ('cause I guess she wanted out for whatever reason), and BAM; she kicks me square in the fucking teeth! And I'm thinking, "Really?! All this during The fucking Frail?! Really?!"

I was at the lighter show in Grand Rapids sad smiley

Jacket got stolen during March Of The Pigs moshing, went to go get it, was separated from my friend for the rest of the show.

At the Grand Rapids show last November, I arrived in the nin.com entrance and got way up front before anybody else was let in. However, there was no coat check, and it was probably 20 degrees outside. So, instead of going crazy, I was too busy trying to hold onto my jacket/trying to not sweat to death

At the Detroit show last month, I was all excited when I was walking in, as I heard Sin which led into MotP, great opening songs. I was much less pleased to hear the following 7-8 songs played in the SAME EXACT ORDER as those on AATCHB. I actually sat down for a bit because I was so bummed. Luckily and graciously though, we got LitS and The Downward Spiral. I was just bummed due to the largely greatest hits set, when it was stated this would not be the case. No worries though, Bonnaroo more than made up for it

I was at the Sydney show earlier this year, second row, smothered by large people when the electricity and air-con cut out....for 40 mins. After about 20 mins I felt very queezy and faint, really didn't want to bail as I had waited in line since 2pm. Luckily (and with great difficulty) I held on and electricity kicked back in...NIN kicked back in with 1,000,000 and after an initial 2 mins of still feeling crap and ill all of a sudden the energy grabbed me again and it was like I was in a transcendent NIN state! Carried away with the energy of all these people around me that went through the same ordeal, not to mention NIN who gave all they could. As stated by TR afterwards it was a chaotic, crazy, rough show (or something like that). So long story short...what could have ended as a total downer (if I had bailed, and kicked myself for doing so as NIN played for another hour), it actually became one of the most amazing NIN experiences I've had.

Now lets change this thread to something more positive ehh!

It was the night before our wedding in New York, and two fellow NIN fans had decided to drive us up to CT for a concert the night before. We flew over from Ireland to get married in New York and thought it was a great opportunity and would be my first time seeing them so I was really excited.
NIN were playing in a Casino there, and we decided to have a drink beforehand. My friends daughter was 20, just under the drinking limit. I decided to buy her a beer anyway (this is totally normal in Ireland and I know very naive of me to do).
A cop came up behind us as soon as I passed her the drink. They kicked us out, mainly because she had no ID saying who she was.
Even though me and my friend were crying and my friend insisted we were getting married in the morning and apologised profusely for her daughter, it made no difference.
Ruined the night but thankfully not the wedding...

The girl that started talking about her chewing gum during hurt..!! I'm totally against violence but right then, I wanted to hit her in the face.

Hah, I remember this. We left our jackets in the car and froze outside for 4 hours rather than choosing to melt inside. I also remember the cold air feeling GREAT on our skin when we got back outside after the show.

sound going out during terrible lie on my birthday at NIN|JA chula vista

irvine 2006 show, ridiculously low volume in the upper part of the ampitheatre seats for entire time. that show i wasn't too crazy about.

being forced to smoke a joint with a random dude during the lights in the sky tour at virgin festival 2008. cant say it was bad, but it was the "worst" thats happen to me. in fact, over all that show was one of my favorites, next to thier wave goodbye show at bonnaroo.

Portland, OR - Rose Garden Arena 12/7/08

I was having an extremely stressful week, got about 3 hours of sleep the night before. My friends and I arrive to the presale line around 10am. It's cold and raining and we generally weren't having a good time. But we were still hopeful because we were pretty close to the front of the line, ensuring us a rail spot.

So we wait around 7 hours. Then the presale booth finally opens. I walk up to show our tickets, the lady says that "they ARE the tickets". So we go to the actual venue and hand them the tickets. Turns out that we had ROSE GARDEN presale tickets, not nin.com presale tickets. All that waiting, and looking forward to a rail spot for MONTHS....for nothing.

There was crying and lots of disappointment. After talking to the staff, they agreed to let us at the front of the regular GA line, which was really really nice of them. I'm grateful about that.

The show was good and NIN kicked ass, but I was kinda just numb from disappointment the whole time. I was pretty much just waiting for the show to end. I didn't even really want to be there.

I know I shouldn't be complaining because I got see NIN and we got let in front of the line. It's just that there was so much stress going on beforehand and things were falling apart in my head, and when we found out about how we had the wrong tickets, it was just the final blow.

I haven't really had a truly bad experience. I guess if I had to pick the "worst", it would be my first show, even though at the time I still thought it was the best day / show ever when it was over. Everyone in the Spiral line got to a souncheck / meet & greet except for these two girls and I, so we were a little bummed out watching them all go in and come out going "I met Trent!" When we were searched, security made us walk to the mall 10 minutes away through the skywalk to store our stuff in a locker because there was no coat / item check. We were on Jeordie's side, one person back from the rail. There was a really huge guy, totally wasted, behind me screaming "Whooo!" and picking up my arms and waving them around, lowering his lighter into my hair, and trying to mosh during SICNH. It was my first time in a pit of any sort and I was getting kind of pissed so I figured I'd try to knock him down or out, and was suprisingly mostly successful. It was a good show, but most of my memories are of Jeordie's face, looking like he was constipated. Oh, and Alex Carapetis was the drummer.

Oh yeah, this was in Winnipeg, November 14, 2005.

Haven't had a "bad" experience but at the 5.15 show in phoenix there was a really really large sweaty guy who was a pretty obtrusive presence and i didn't like it. so i moved.

The worst thing to happen at a NIN show was the one back in november 2008 in fort wayne .. It was a super poor attendance .. Like only sold a 1/4 of the stadium .. The crowd was weak .. The opener was annoying .. But NIN rocked the fuck out hard .. Shorter set then i wanted .. But was still awesome .. I was sad at the low attendance ..

I would say that the Philly LITS show was my worst experience. We arrived at the venue at a reasonably good time and had a nice spot pretty close to center stage. But as people piled in a group of d-bags started pushing their way up towards the front. When they got to us, we realized we were at the line where people were not going to let people pass anymore. Well Does it offend you, yeah? went nicely and we maintained our good spot, but once NIN started I felt a knee in my back and at the same moment the girl next to me gets punched in the back of the head. The d-bags behind us at that point were throwing knees and punches to get forward. Of course this being early in the show there was no place to go. But somehow these assholes pushed their way in front. By the 4th song in I was about 20 feet back from where I was. Worst crowd ever. And to add to the fun, while standing back from the d-bags during the ghosts set some asshole starts whipping cds toward the stage. Took it upon myself to yell at the guy for being a douche. He kept throwning, so yelled again in a more threatening manor. Two minutes later he was taken out by security. Probably the high point of the night. At the end of the night my back was bruised, my sister's back was hurt pretty bad too from these guys throwing punches and knees. Then tried waiting outside by the buses to maybe get a wave or something, started raining, but we didn't care. Waited for about an hour and a half and watched the buses drive off. The setlist was amazing, the crowd was absolutely horrible.

So far a lot of Michigan shows are getting hit.

Both of my *bad* experiences had nothing at all to do with the band / show and everything to do with the attendees.

1. Lighter incident show at Grand Rapids in February 2006. Yep, nuff said.
2. Cleveland in August 2008. Got kicked in the head and was knocked out cold. Woke up as they were putting me in the ambulance. Only knew my name, had no clue where I was or who was with me. I walked back into the show very dazed and confused. After waking with the mother of all headaches (and enough blood on my pillow from a ruptured hematoma on my ear to worry hotel security), I found out I had cracked the base of my skull. Yey for me.

1.) Getting stopped by the cops after the 2005 St. Louis show for making a right turn on a red light. I guess that's against the law in St. Louis. 25 minutes later everything checked out and I was on my way.

2.) Two girls got in a fight a section over from my friend and I in Lincoln, February 2006. The one's boyfriend jumped in and beat of the girls up something fierce. It got broken up, but the boyfriend ran off before we could get security up there.

3.) Some guy trying to challenge me to a fight while I was peeing in Columbia (Nov 2008.) That really wasn't a bad experience, but it was annoying to try and fight some guy off while doing my business.

After seven shows these are about the only bad things I can think of. I'd write all of the good things, but I can't fit them into one message.

i was also at the philly LITS tour, and agree: amazing show, horrible crowd. a dude randomly moshed in to me, from behind so i didn't see him, and i ended up with sprained/hurt neck & upper back muscles. lasted for about a week.

at the 02 there was a mental woman on steroids or something really hurting people kicking and biting and screaming the lyrics to hurt and other undisclosed things which I wouldnt want to broadcast because that would be nasty to the individual. anyway we missed the last train home and had to spen £75 on a taxi home. but the show was awesome that was just the aftermath.

08/11/09 11:53 AM

Only been to a few shows, and neither was anywhere close to being a bad experience. However, I did forget to bring my glasses with me to Toronto (I'm not blind or anything, but I kind of need them for distance), which really sucked since I was in the back half of the amphitheater. Also, I had aisle seats and there was a support beam that helps hold the roof up blocking my view of half the stage. Not a huge deal, except when I moved over I was blocking the view of two petite NIN fans behind me. I felt bad, so every few songs I would kind of move out of the way so they could see. Normally I'd move out of the way for the entire show, but this was my last time seeing NIN so fuck that.

Dude, you should have just turned and pissed on his shoes a la Jack Nicholson in "Wolf".

My worst was also the best....Blaisdell Arena Summer Tour 2007 Honolulu Hawaii. At the last minute I decided to fly by myself on the day of the show. Drunk local kept trying to talk to me during the concert, had to give up my spot by the sound board just to get away from him. My favorite played that night: The Great Destroyer.... That show really rocked my world, it was absolutely amazing! Such a shitty year made completely better by one wonderful night, flew home the next day. I've never had a better time by myself, and I'm sure I never will again. Every NIN show I've ever seen holds a special place in my mind and heart. I'm very sad that it looks like I won't be getting to one of the last LA shows, not good at saying goodbye, so I'll just say, thanks Trent!

The Sonisphere Festival gig (which oddly enough was their last ever performance in Europe) wasn't so good.

I'd been looking forward to it quite a bit, but myself and the other NIN fans there (along with the neutrals) were left a bit bemused by a disinterested looking Trent Reznor and a decidedly quiet set that completely lacked any kind of spark or energy.

They finished early too. sad smiley

Flying to LA early september from Scotland, so fingers crossed, they'll be back to their best for those shows smiling smiley

08/12/09 11:23 AM

Trent explained why they played what they played. Maybe they seemed to lack energy because they weren't jumping around throwing mic stands.

08/12/09 11:42 AM

i had some crack head dancing and touching me the whole time..
it was scary... haha

08/13/09 1:59 PM

It wasn't a good show from them Rodrigo. I'm a big fan, and do like their entire catalogue (be it loud or quiet tunes), but that was a disinterested performance from them. I'm not alone in thinking this either.

Were you at the festival?

And as you piss on his shoes, put your hands on his shoulders and look into his eyes with a sort of dreamy look. This would've freaked him the fuck out. Trust me on this one.
