I do that for every show and usually have a tea bag in it for extra kick. Generally they won't let you bring your own full water/drink bottles or food in, though sometimes I've gotten granola bars in by accident that I didn't even know I had in my mini backpack. Sometimes they'll just say "You're not supposed to bring those in" but not actually take them away. With drink bottles though they won't let you take full ones in.
how big of a backpack do they allow in?
Well, I always bring a mini/half-size backpack and have no trouble getting it in. As for a full sized one I really don't know, but I do know most venues
don't like big stuff brought in, and specifically say no backpacks (though mini ones are always fine, as they're no bigger than some women's purses), so I'd stick to a mini-backpack if I were you. Mine's about 16 inches high and 12 inches wide, max.
Also, if you plan to be in a rough area of general admission, twist-tie the zippers shut or something as the jumping up and down in the crush will make them come undone as happened to me in the last Hamilton show. I'm amazed my wallet and cell didn't fall out as the whole thing and pockets ended up wide open!
