Yeah, confusion all round when the house lights came on after they went off. No encore was a big bummer, but The Fragile was a treat (album version).

02/17/09 5:05 AM

Well I loved the show. My first, probably last but, fuck I hope not.

Setlist:
1000000
Letting you
Discipline
March of the Pigs
Something I Can Never Have
Terrible lie
The line begins to blur
Head down
Burn
Survivalism
Gave up
La Mer
The fragile
Non entity
The Downward Spiral
Wish
Suck
Hurt
The Hand That Feeds
Head Like A Hole

Encore [NOT PLAYED]
Reptile
Meet Your Master
Dead Souls

The first 3 Slip tracks really started things off with a bang, I enjoyed them more that I expected. Very cool way to start the show. March of the Pigs really went off, it's a staple, but of course this being my first NIN show it was new to me. I felt that way about most of the staples, I expected to find the rarities more enjoyable without realising I haven't actually seen any of this stuff live before. Which is great becuase the show exceed my expectations. La Mer was cool, I love that song and seeing it live was excellent. So was TDS, really sweet song live. Hurt was nice hearing everyone sing along. And only one guy yelled something retarded during it ( "What a homo" ) Very sad to hear Trent say this is probably the last time they'll play a gig in NZ, but at least it was a probably. Over all, I left wanting more and a little bummed out. BUT, the show was fucking awesome, I'm glad I was there and I certainly feel I got my money's worth and then some.

There must have been a good reason. This setlist or the new workload must be a bit too brutal, It seemed we were given an unusually short chance to petition the encore before the lights of doom. We sang Hurt perfectly, apart from the aforementioned and some girls that giggled when he said shit, probably expected him to say thorns.
Fair enough the place wasn't packed, but that's what kind of reputation the vector has. I know half a dozen fans as passionate as me that couldn't afford to go anymore, and another half that said they didn't want to suffer the acoustics. Pish whatever, softcores.
Can you tell I'm still smarting from the loss of live Closer? It's not my favourite by any means, but I was looking forward to it, and then the lights in the sky took it with them. While it may be a bore to play, it's a bit mean to leave out such a popular song for the fans you've just told you probably won't come and see again. Maybe I'm overestimating it's weight. I didn't set out to spend so many words sounding like I'm complaining, quite the opposite.

Anyway, I really loved every second before the end. I'll get over it soon and bask in the memory of many good noises had tonight. It won't be the last time, even if it's the last time at home.

Still the only musician that I can assign a rank to, and that rank is 1.

EDIT/PS: The crowd went ape shit for the earlier songs, and was generally less keen on much of the the new era stuff. Might have been a downer for the guys. Sorry about that.

I remeber buying Broken over 15 years ago and missing out going to see NIN play in 1994 at the powerstation (Auckland). All I can say is I love the music I have done for some years and am glad I had the chance to seem them live.

Enjoy the music, otherwise no one else will.

02/17/09 6:49 AM

La Mer was full version, with Robin playing the Xylophone and what looked like a Slide Guitar. Amazing.

Did they play the Powerstation?? I thought the only one the played was the Big Day Out in 2000?
Mikey Havoc just gave NIN the big ups on the radio this morning as I write this...woohoo!
Had an awesome time, but wish we would have had an encore, (since this is our one and only real nin show.
sad smiley
Plus, TR said he has a surprise planned for our show?
What was it? I didn't see it..?
PS a gripe about the presale line...me and an American lady got here first before everyone else, (I arrived at 5 am)...we never got clear instructions on where to line up after we got our tickets. We were told to line up at gate G and everyone moved to gate B at some stage and we lost our place in line and got in last. I tried to tell the guy hearding the line inside, but he said first inside not in order we got here. The 'friends' we were waiting with didn't even bother to come and tell us that we were lining up somewhere else(one of them even got a spare presale off my USA friend!) and never saved our space. We would have done that if it were someone else...pffft
That was the only thing that sucked about the show.

Well, as for some others posting this thread this was my first, and it seems probably last live NiN performance. Sad to hear they may be giving it up but I can understand their reasons. I'm just glad I went last night.

Big thanks to Trent and the band, you are awesome musicians. Hope for more in the years to come, even if it's not in person. I had a fantastic time!

I can't help but feel a little disappointed we didn't get an encore, I was really looking forward to Meet your Master and Reptile since they didn't play much Year Zero. It dawned on me after how much With Teeth/year Zero they must have played live over the last two years so I guess we miss out a bit.

I absolutely loved the concert, it was SICK! Trent was totally into it, giving it everything, full of energy, fantastic sound, it was just fucking brilliant!

NIN went on a massive hiatus between TDS and The Fragile, he has been touring pretty much non stop since he released With Teeth and has produced so much material since, he obviously needs a break after this tour.

I guess if we ever do see NIN again we will be old and grey.

02/17/09 12:34 PM

The setlist was blindingly awesome and the only real thing I can fault the gig for was the lack of encore. I never expected to hear TDS, La Mer or Non Entity, or even Burn as I half thought they might make up for their lack of visits here by playing a setlist of mainly staple tracks.

My personal favourites were Terrible Lie and Burn, and of course Hurt. I saw them in Sydney 18 months ago at a gig where they played most of TDS and Year Zero, so this setlist was actually just about the perfect complement to that.

As for the lack of encore - maybe the band were just too knackered? Disappointing, I was holding out for maybe Closer, Echoplex, and Only. Although if Gman3k is right with the unplayed encore, Dead Souls would've been an absolute blinder.

[edit: if I'm lucky, I might get some of what I missed at Soundwave in Sydney this weekend]

OK, I am OT here, but I agree with you nez. I'd rather NIN went on 'hiatus' while they were still kicking a$$ than have them continue on and risk fading quality-wise (although I doubt Trent would let that happen). Soundgarden for me are an example of a band that did a great job of going out on a high. As opposed to, say, the Smashing Pumpkins who have dragged on a bit painfully.

02/17/09 12:38 PM

Last night was just AWESOME. the seats we'd booked through here were wonderful my only gripe being not able to see the drummer - we caught glimpses of flailing arms & head but that was about it - who sounded brilliant. in fact the whole band were spot on. instense. committed. giving.
came out of the show slightly stunned, elated, grinning. this was my first NIN live experience and unfortunately probably my last. given the amount he put in to last nights show i can understand Trent taking a break.
a huge thank you to the band.
sounded great. looked brilliant. fantastic lighting. a night long to be remembered.

02/17/09 1:02 PM

Was a good show, glad Robin is back (I think he is the canonical NIN guitarist, the ending of Suck showed that). Disappointed to not get the encore, especially now seeing Reptile/Dead Souls.

Survivalism was a bit wobbly, and personally I'd rather have seen The Big Come Down (which was obscenely good on the BYIT dvd) instead of The Fragile - but absolutely stoked with Wish/Gave Up/Suck/La Mer/TDS (!)

The drummer was... energetic to say the least smiling smiley Interesting to see the double bass come out a couple of times too.

Also, screw that security guard or whoever was shining that ridiculously bright flashlight during Hurt, couldn't concentrate on the song with that damn thing.

Cheers T.R. & crew smiling smiley

Same here, except I couldn't see him because TR was in front of him most of the time. Lol.

02/17/09 1:14 PM

Awesome show! Hurt and Wish totally went off!

Gutted that this might be the last time we see them. Absolutely brilliant show. 1000 times better than big day out appearance all those years ago!

Thanks Trent...for everything!

02/17/09 1:24 PM

Best show ever. Trent's perfect pitch live was amazing, so was Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bass, huge presence. Robin Finck seemed a bit flat to me Though. Ilan Rubin was flawless on the drums too. Cant say enough really.
I really hope NIN will be back in full force in the not too distant future. Trent has definitely earned a break from it though, every track must tear him down and build him up though just like it does with the fans so it must be incredibly draining on him.

I wish Non-Entity was available somewhere, such a good track!

Thanks NIN!

02/17/09 2:00 PM

Great show! I would have seen them in 1994 at the Powerstation and also missed out at Docklands in 200 when someone was sick.

Best songs for me were Something I Can Never Have, Suck, The Fragile, TDS, Burn and Survivalism (bit of a surprise for me). Shame about no encore though - with the amount he seems to work out now I'm sure he could have played the last 3 songs. I suppose there must have been a reason.....

Now to wait until he hits the "Greatest Hits Reunion Tour" gravy-train winking smiley

We had a tour poster in my friend's flat at the time. 'twas a real shame they didn't play then as the Powerstation is a great venue IMO.

02/17/09 2:19 PM

This was an interesting show for me, I didn't know half of the songs played as I am a bit of a NIN n00b and only own a few albums. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Last year I went to a Smashing Pumpkins gig and knew every single song they played, and sung along with all of them. The crowd at that show was probably only interested in the hits (Play 'Rat in a Cage!') but last night, it was as though almost everyone there was just like me as I was at the Pumpkins show. It's great to see such passion in the fans.

The performance was blistering, absolutely brutal. Probably the one of best performances I've seen. The band was tight and precise despite Trent admitting that they didn't know what they were doing with their new set-up (Nice try, Trent).

Even though I didn't know most of the songs, I was surprised at how many I did. It was incredible hearing these songs live. The songs I didn't know sounded awesome, and it was good to see that the crowd was really enjoying everything they threw out there. The setlist was definitely suited to a hardcore fan.

My favourites were 1,000,000 though to March of the Pigs, Head Down, Gave Up, La Mer, The Fragile, Wish, and despite me not knowing it, Head Like a Hole. I wouldn't be able to put a name to a face for the other songs, but there were some awesome sounding ones amongst there.

Some things I noticed:

•My ticket said "Nine Inch Nails with special guests". Who were these special guests? Was it The Naked and Famous? Did we get our tickets before they decided who to open for them? That can't be right, because on my way out of the venue, I was handed a "souvenir ticket" (why couldn't I just keep my own?) which said the same thing, and not a mention of The Naked and Famous.

•No encore sucks. A comment on the review on stuff.co.nz suggested that maybe the band was annoyed that they were booed for saying this would probably be their last show here. I'unno, it didn't sound like booing to me, it was more like a big disappointed "awww", and even if they were booed, that doesn't seem like grounds to not give an encore. Of course the audience would be miffed if they were told their favourite band isn't going to play live for them again. The band could have been knackered from the performance... who knows.

•No Ghosts? I was expecting some of those tracks peppered here and there, they've come out in previous set lists before.

•The light show wasn't as spectacular as I've seen at other acts. NIN have a reputation for amazing special effects (Lights in the Sky looked mind-blowing eye popping smiley) but the lights were pretty minimal, the same kind of stuff you'd expect at any gig.

One question: Is there an open-taping policy with NIN? Did anyone bootleg this show?

If anyone saw me, I was the guy in the white shirt that said "LET'S HUG IT OUT" in blue writing. I figured I'd stand out like a sore thumb tongue sticking out smiley

02/17/09 2:44 PM

There are already clips on You Tube dude smiling smiley Survivalism was best mosh pit song, loved it tongue sticking out smiley Wish just didn't let up and in March of the Pigs Bogans came out of nowhere and were viciously aggressive it was wicked.

I don't know about an open-taping policy but Trent is pretty strongly in favour of 'share and share alike', mainly due to negative experiences with over-zealous record companies.

02/17/09 2:54 PM

You cant have been expecting the full Lights in the sky lighting and effects show surely! thats likely to be a monumental amount of gear with fly-ed LED screens and such, too major to drag 20000 k's down here!

Did any media outlet here do an interview with Trent? anyone know?

02/17/09 3:11 PM

Awesome show!!! First NIN show I've been to, and the performance and sound was excellent. Very happy I went!

The lack of encore was a bit disappointing, kinda hoping Trent will comment on why.

The set was good, nice mix of old & new, with some of the classics which really topped it off for me (I'm more of an old-school NIN fan, haven't listened to the new stuff much [as he listens to The Slip...]).

Big thumbs up to NIN & the band. And also a good show by The Naked & Famous... good energy and I think I could detect some of the NIN influence in a few of their songs! (They're huge fans apparently.)

I think a lot of that was to do with the flashes.

I find it amusing how people who were 10m or more from the stage were taking pics with their flash on. All that does is make the camera think it's gonna get more light than it will, so the pic comes out darker with less detail than if they turn their flash off. Reminds me of the idiots using a flash to take a pic from the sky tower... yeah, nice flash reflection off the glass...
