Last night - to me - felt like the latter.
Normally, I use that as a catalyst to push it further - use the apathy as an energy - and often that translates into breaking through to people. Last night we did that but it still seemed to yield little results.
Could be the venue, the fact this is the first indoor show, the other acts, the order - most likely us. I'm not blaming you and don't take it personal. Perhaps the "honest tweet" concept should be reconsidered on my part.

you tweet to much, but yet i guess your honest.

i wish he coulda gave the crowd some more energy, somehow?

I'm likely older than most of you (one year older than Trent), and I love a great show... but one of the reasons I go to shows is because I know Trent has always been on the bleeding edge of sound technology. I have a decent stereo, but can never quite get it as loud as I'd like. At a NIN, I know it's going to be VERY high sound fidelity without any dirty noise. Just pure clean frequencies that rattle the bones. I got what I was after. And although I've been a fan of Jane's Addiction for awhile, I have a brand new appreciation for them. Both acts... absolute top of their games. Thanks for the show. I dug it. :-)

05/14/09 10:35 AM

I thought the show was awesome despite the GA crowd. I wish I could have been down there to knock some heads and start a riot or something...

05/14/09 10:42 AM

yeah, even down here in Corpus, we would have been more aggressive.

seems the NIN presale for the fans was fail. i never got any email and from the commits in this thread, i wasn't the only one left to settle with seats.

so, the show rocked. the crowd was tame, and the venue just didn't seem to really accomodate this kind of show, but nonetheless, i had a great time.
SSSC was good. it's refreshing to hear something new. there are remnants of Rage in the music, and the MIA cover was nice.
NIN, like always, were amazing. though i felt like they could've performed to higher standards, i got what i wanted: an NIN show nothing short of awesome. i very much enjoyed the setlist, especially The Fragile and Lights In The Sky. the strobes almost entirely blocked my view of Ilan and some bit of Robin, and those strobes really do hurt your eyes. after attending the With Teeth and LITS tours numerous times, seeing a stripped down stage and setlist was nice. this became more about the music and the band, and i really appreciated that.
Jane's was just killer! i wish i could've gotten into their vibe years ago. i was a bit upset that a good portion of the NIN crowd left, but many Jane's fans showed up in my area. Perry can really work a crowd and the band played really tight. this is my official introduction to Jane's and i'm blown away. i now see why they're legacy is very much relevant.
my only gripes were of course the crowd. reaction was less than favorable and left much to be desired. could be the camera friendly policy, nearly everyone had one. they fidgitted with their cameras and therefore i think that killed the mood of returning a great response. the arena wasn't filled very much either. the pit area was half full, the first two seating levels were nicely filled, and the top area patrons should've had their seats upgraded. the stage took up about half the floor, thus providing an "intimate" arena show, considering the fact the Frank Erwin Center isn't all that big.
if you have not bought a ticket to this show, i higly recommend you do. you won't be disappointed.

Yes! flew in monday, hung out with my apple peeps in the Austin office. show on tuesday, flew back home to SF yesterday. off again on monday to vegas show, then irvine, santa barbara and shoreline shows. :-) i couldn't fucking use the nin app in the venue, was on the floor on the rail. no connection hardly at all. concrete buildings not good for cell reception :-)

05/14/09 11:21 AM

I was at the very front of the pit. I have more fun further back, with the moshers, but this being my frist time that close with a camera, I stayed put. It was the most comfortable I had ever been that far up in pit. The people around me seemed to be there primarily for NIN, but still weren't getting nuts, or doing much pushing. It was still too crowded to jump around or get into the music as much as I'd have liked to. I hate being that close, and too squished to show my true enthusiasm. I did my best though! I'd have to say that overall it wasn't my favorite NIN show, but I did enjoy it (DUH!!).

I was actually TRYING to get some pictures of Rob. Everyone around me would have their camera pointed toward Trent while mine was pointed off to the right or wherever Rob was. Ha.

I was doing the same, he was staying the shadows so well that very few pics of him turned out even half way decent.

I don't get how the crowd sucked at all. I was on the center floor about 5-10 rows back. We were raging during SSSC and especially during NIN. I danced and yelled so hard during NIN I had nothing left for JA but I still moved as much as my weak, wornout body would allow. Austin went out with a whisper because that's all I could do after loosing my voice during NIN. Everyone around me during all shows were dancing their asses off, singing, smiling, and enjoying being alive at that moment. I didn't get Trent's comment at all, but I was watching from the stage either. Thanks for the amazing show see at bonnaroo. smiling smiley

I drove 3 hours to make this show and was completely satisfied.

Street Sweeper was awesome, I'll be purchasing their album on June 16.
NIN was FUCKING INCREDIBLE AS ALWAYS. Several songs I've never heard live was a treat.
JA was badass.

Trent thank you for putting this show together!

05/14/09 1:39 PM

did anybody else see that fight in that "one" mosh. i was in sec. 92 row 14 seat 2. somebody tapped my shoulder and asked if we could sit down so they could see nin. wtf. my girl said his girl was all fudged up looking. daised out with a zombie face.

05/14/09 2:17 PM

I want to say what an awesome time. Shout out to all the people we party with after the show back at the super 8 across the arena. That was crazy. It was like the place was just filled with NIN fans. One big door to door party.

05/14/09 3:04 PM

I just wanted to add that I think it is a fantastic idea to have the extra speakers in the center right over the front of the pit.
Those really helped. I wish more venues/bands would do that.

I totally agree with Trent. I drove 6 hours to get to Austin and I was disappointed with the crowd. I was jumping and screaming..but the people around me just looked at me like I had two heads.

I really did not care for the way we were escorted into the pit area either. Normally I walk into a venue excited...I felt like I was at school or something. Dampened my mood.

I was reading further back and saw that some people miss the effects, some dont like the line-up. I have gone to 8 Nails shows and this is THE most vulnerable I have ever seen Trent. No screens..No effects to distract...just him as the main attraction. It is probably not his comfort zone..and he really sang the shit out of the songs. I really felt that he was trying hard to make sure that people like me..and a lot of you..really enjoyed the last tour. Funny ...he didnt feel connected to us as a crowd..but I personally felt more of a connection from him than ever. I think those of you that miss the effects just dont really get it. (its about the music and the mad genius that makes it) Saying you miss the effects is like saying that your wife only looks pretty with make-up, make sense?
I was glad for the line-up the way it was. I, personally, was full of energy when TR hit the stage...by the end of JA I was dead on my feet. Also I believe I would have cried if TR left the stage last when the lights went up. Instead...after Trent left, I was able to look forward to seeing another great band.
The crowd around me did get more lovely (grin) for JA. They were drunk LOL. Maybe the venue needs to open earlier so more of the "concert dudes" are drunk. LOL

I loved the show...I will Miss NIN

Thank you for the music

Thank you for saying this.

No problem...just voicing my opinion...

Due to the less strict camera policy AND the iPhone App...do you think more people were trying to record/take pics/iPhone update and resulted in less people "flailing"?

Just curious.

Camera policy definatly made a lot of people less energetic. It is really cool to have cameras and recorders, but it sucked in some ways. I am very short. I had A lot of trouble seeing at this show because everybody had their arms in the air holding a camera. Normally people have their arms in the air but they are jumping around and I am able to see past them or around them. But with all the photographers in the crowd, not so much.

I took a few pics and they turned out ok...but I spent more of my time trying to dance, jump and sing.

I love "honest tweets"...that's the whole purpose of twittering, IMO. Keep it real, Trent--- I knows you will, nukka! xxx.

maybe another factor in the crowd was that most of the people really close to the rail were standing in line in the blasting sun for several hours. some had even stayed overnight outside the venue, so did not get much (if any) sleep. just saying... hungry, tired, dehydrated...

maybe just from my spot, but the people around me were very into it. when we were weren't screaming along the lyrics, we were in awe ("OMG, i can't believe he's playing this song!" ) and i remember this short girl next to me that kept getting squashed and elbowed. i think she would beg to differ that the crowd was too tame.

in any case, i loved the show and all the great songs we got. i would do it all over again.

Yeah i think the audience was pretty into it in the immediate front. I have bruises and soreness all over my body to prove it. Alot of us up in the front were there all day. My boyfriend walked to the nearest gas station to grab me some gatorade shortly before they finally let us in - so after chugging that I was much better - I am major sunburned on my chest though. I think the cameras may have had an issue. I saw several people trying to take pictures instead of rocking out but those nearest to me seemed very into it. I was singing along as best i could without losing my breathe - enjoyed every moment. I left the pit after NIN to go find the merch booth - and I was COMPLETELY soaked with a mixture of mine and everyone else's sweat. My pants where heavy and practically falling off they were so wet. I tied up my shirt so that my stomach could get air - it was realllllly hot. Once i gnabbed the laptop bag I wanted soooo bad I went back to enjoy JA - and they were completely awesome as well. That Perry is a character - gotta love him. He simply doesnt give a shit.

the show was fucking awesome, loved the setlist! got a great spot on the rail in front of Robin, totally worth the wait outside. it was fucking hot & started feeling sick. i was the weirdo laying right on the floor trying not to pass out. thanks nin for letting us in early to wait inside, that saved me smiling smiley

i was really excited to hear Sin & the becoming. The Fragile was perfect but i couldnt sing along bc i was trying not to cry. i met some really cool ninners in presale line, it was great meeting you all!!

ss kicked ass! my iphone had no service there so i couldnt play w/nin access or text ss. but that's okay, i was too busy enjoying the show to be messing w/the phone winking smiley i wish i could see more shows. cant wait for Chicago!!

This was the best concert of my life!!! We were close the front (3rd "row" directly in front of Justin) for almost the entire show. This is my 4th NIN concert... and hands down the best. We danced our asses off, got caught up in some pit action (& had the "beer hair" to prove it, ha!), sang ourselves hoarse, and just had a blast. We camped out at the front & had a front row spot for Jane's Addiction as well.

The best part was I somehow managed to get a backstage pass! (Thank you, Easter Bunny!) So after the show, we went in the back & met Robin, Justin, Stephen Perkins, & Dave Navarro. =) Everyone was really great & I thank them ALL for taking time out to shake our hand & snap a picture. (Justin even chatted with us for a bit... such a sweetheart!) It was really cool of them & it totally made our night! Definitely one of those "pinch me" moments. cool smiley It's by far the coolest thing that's ever happened to me & literally one of the best nights of my entire life.

Regarding Trent's comments: I do think it was a different show on the floor than it was for people in the seats. Everyone on the floor around us was dancing, jumping, pushing, singing, pumping fists, etc. We were all crammed up next to each other like sweaty sardines... but damnit we were having a good time. Maybe the people stuck in seats didn't have that same experience.

For the '94 Downward Spiral show, I was stuck waaaay up on the top mezzanine in the nosebleeds. It was like watching the show from Switzerland. And it's so steep up there that I couldn't dance at all because of the vertigo. It was a great show nonetheless, but there definitely wasn't a lot of energy up in that balcony. So my guess is maybe it's the Frank Erwin Center. When we saw Tool there a few yrs ago, same thing. You are kinda stuck in your seat or you have all of a 2 foot area to boogie in. That's really not a lot of room to get crazy & feed energy back to the band.

The '95 NIN/Bowie show was a different story. Great show! (Had my 1st kiss w/ my current husband of 12 yrs @ that show! Teehee.) Loved Southpark Meadows... I wish Austin had a good outdoor venue again.
