Peoples,

Firstly, that is Brett, Trent's assistant, helping out with his in-ear monitoring system. smiling smiley Our stage manager is Cliff, a different fellow.

Secondly, I just want to say I dig the sentiments on here, and I think that the show was good overall, we had some niggling troubles, and perhaps the crowd vibe wasn't A+. But I wouldn't want to take anything away from those of you who said it was a great experience for you. I am very glad to see your appreciation for the effort of us busting out some rarities for you.

My favorite moments tonight? The Way Out is Through, The Fragile, La Mer, and (can you believe it) Head Like A Hole. Strange but true.

This tour is great. And we're really enjoying meeting a good number of you before and after the shows; always cool to see people from all walks of life with every point of view one can imagine. A perk of the job.

Thanks, Austin! We appreciate you.

On to Albuquerque.

JMJ

All I can say is damn! My husband got video of Tom Morello playing the guitar with his teeth! I thought SSSC rocked!! Of course loved NIN & the set they did was absolutely amazing. I started jumping up and down when they did Dead Souls! Jane's Addiction was pretty cool too. Does anyone else think Dave is too pretty? I thought Perry was incredible especially after tearing his calf in Atlanta!
All in all, great show. I can see some of what Trent was talking about. The vibe was a bit off tonight but I think it was just on the floor, because like someone else pointed out earlier, everyone in the seats were jumping & having a blast! We were on Justin's side of the stage & everyone around us was up out of their seats, having a blast!
Great job again & thanks so much for another great show!

Okay I'm partly rehidrated, and showered.
SSSC was alright. I wasn't blown away by them nor did I think they sucked. At least Ive seen Morello play in each of his bands. err never saw him as the Nightwatchman
As for NIN. I think the show was fucking amazing, another great setlist. NIN has so many great masterpieces I doubt he could ever make a set list to appease everybody. I don't think Ive heard Dead Souls at any of the other twelve shows I've been to so that was a treat, and hearing Lights in the Sky live was amazing. I can kinda see what Trent was talking about, I was in the front and it seemed like some people weren't all that excited to hear stuff like The Becoming, Heresy, Dead Souls, I do not want this, or LITS. In fact I heard two people complain about not hearing Closer, but one of them didn't even know the name, he said that one about fucking like an animal.
Jane's put on an amazing show also. I'm still suprised they open with Three Days, seems like a song they would work up to, but its amazing to hear live either way. The crowd was rather mellow for them except when some asshole started pushing people out of the way and yelling "Dave Navarro's a pussy" in between songs, jealousy a bitch I guess. I must say I was surprised before NIN came out to hear a group discussing whether or not to stay for Jane's, to which one "replied What song do they do?" Can't believe one of the best bands in rock hasn't been passed down to the younger generation. hmmm that made me sound old.

And last but not least. Apparently I became a marker for people to find there friends or way back to where they were, due to my mohawk. And during Jane's a couple told me not to move so they could find there way back. So the woman came back with two beers, and I jokingly said "Where's mine?" Then she offered it to me, to which I said I was just kidding and attempted to reject it 3 or 4 times. But hey I like beer. So I accepted it. In case your reading this THANKS again.

Since we are talking about stage hands and non-band members. I took a few photos of Rob taking pictures since it seems like he is never caught on camera smiling smiley I'll get those up sooner or later. Did anyone else notice that he was in fact filming a few of the songs.

Anybody have Jane's setlist. Talk about a jam session, homeboys fucking rocked it. I've never been a huge fan, but I'm sold!

05/12/09 11:34 PM

I'm sure Jane's is fine with 20-30% of the crowd leaving (I don't think it's anywhere near that much myself, based on people I've talked to who are going to the shows, etc.) but I'm sure it's like 10-15%. NIN is a big draw and Jane's broke up in 1991. It only makes sense. Frankly it's a testament to the band that they have as many fans as they do, and keep making more as they go. They fucking ROCK and if you don't stick around to check them out, that's your loss.

Can anyone up a Jane's setlist?

05/12/09 11:35 PM

Justin thanks for posting! I am glad that you guys came to Austin, but I just have to say, maybe the thing that was throwing off the vibe is you cut your freakin' hair man! When did this happen? Everyone was expecting the 'fro & then got disappointed that it wasn't there. I blame you, JMJ! just kidding of course but fo sho miss the 'fro!

Mr Self destruct (fucking badass opener)
Sin
Terrible lie
March of the pigs
Heresy
the Becoming (afterwards, Trent says "that's a hard fucking song to play"winking smiley
Piggy (nothing can stop me now)
(might have missed something here, went for a pee)
Survivalism
Gave up
La mer
The fragile (Trent slams mic stand during 2nd verse)
Gone, still
The way out is through (yes! thank you, Trent)
Wish
I do not want this (nice!)
Lights in the sky (beautiful, despite the fuckwads behind me blabbing the whole time)
Dead souls (wtf?)
The hand that feeds
Head like a hole

humble words of advice from a hardcore fan to Trent:

-don't end with 'head like a hole.' honestly, that's my cue to leave so i can beat the crowds to take a piss, etc. we've seen you play that song more than 'closer', and it needs to be put out of its misery.

-playing before Jane's doesn't make sense to me. I know you probably did this as a 'respect' thing, but in reality, it might be disrespectful to them because about a third of the crowd leaves after NIN is done playing.
-as far as crowd reaction, I can only speak for myself. look, i'm a 40-ish year old man, like you Trent. This is probably the last time I will see NIN play live, and I just want to enjoy hearing you play the songs one last time. Just because I'm not moshing and singing along with every song doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it. To be frank, I had goosebumps when you played 'the way out is through', 'la mer', 'mr self destruct', and a few others. I know that doesn't translate well from a feedback standpoint, but I DID enjoy the show immensely. sorry to disappoint you this time, but thank you for all the years of busting your ass on the road.[/quote]

You missed not so pretty during your pee. Sick show!!! I won't let you fall apart!!!!

I know you're going to find this hard to believe but that would work both ways. If NIN closed, there'd be a chunk of the crowd leaving after Jane's. It's just a matter of which band you're obsessed with.

05/12/09 11:44 PM

Trent and band,

Awesome show and thank you for coming to Austin. It makes my day whenever I don't have to drive to Dallas to see you guys(not that I wouldn't of gone).

I loved the set list and as I was telling my girlfriend, can't really get sick of a song because often the song is remixed in some way, so it's not exactly like what's on the album.

As far as the crowd, hard to say what the deal was...could be because it's Tuesday, could be economy, who knows. I was one of those sitting for some, not cause I was bored, but because the girlfriend is only 5'3" tall and standing just doesn't give her much of a difference in view when someone is standing right in her way, so I feel like I should sit with her.(My fault for not getting tickets on the aisle or on the first row)

If I had my choice, I would of put you guys after Jane's, just cause that's what I want to go out of the show remembering more of. Jane's was good, don't get me wrong...but you guys is why I bought the tickets.

Good luck with the rest of the tour and keep kicking ass.

05/12/09 11:46 PM

I agree with some of the posters here. I was in the seated area, and the majority of us were going absolutely crazy, but I could tell the pit wasn't up to its usual standard. I do think that the majority of people down there were there to see JA, though. That said, this show was my favorite concert I have been to. Both SS and JA were great, and Trent, you guys were just perfect. Thank you so much for playing my favorite Joy Division song. I don't know if you have played it live before, but thank you so much. The middle portion of the set, La Mer - The Way Out Is Through, was beautiful. Just beautiful. Thank you Trent for using your farewell tour to play these tracks. Thank you so much.

05/12/09 11:51 PM

Thanks for posting Justin.
I have to agree with you all. The crowd was a little ehh. The floor was mostly dead except for a handful of people. The seats were pretty crazy though. They guy next to me and I were going crazy during Wish. I kind of felt like pushing him and starting our own pit but I was afraid he wouldn't like that. Overall, it was an awesome concert, with a lot of my favorite NIN songs. The only complaint I have were these two bitches behind me who kept yapping during some songs. Why would you go to a concert and be gossiping the whole time what the hell? Anyway, great job guys. Can't wait to see you all again, in what I'm hoping won't be too many years from now when Trent decides to tour again.

05/12/09 11:56 PM

That was the most insane, mind-blowing experience I've ever had in my life! I also noticed that the "pit" seemed a little tame, kinda weird. This was my first NIN concert and really, really hope that it's not the last. Amazing setlist for us hardcore fans who actually knew the songs. (The event staff lady standing by me the whole show knew more of the songs than most people there, WTF?) My head exploded when Wish and Lights in the Sky started.

Thank you, Trent and Band. Really hope you come back to Austin, even if you were a little disappointed in the crowd.

Pictures and (maybe) video to follow...

No kidding...I swear the last few concerts I've been to, people do not shut their mouth or are constantly screwing around with their damn phone.

Shut your pie hole and pay attention to what you came for, not texting some damn person!

Mr Self Sestruct Pt 1

Mr Self Destruct Pt 2

Heresy

Dead Souls

My first NIN show and it did not disappoint. It was amazing.

As far as the crowd, Austin is a pretty laid back crowd in general, and the FEC just seems to eat crowd noise. It's a problem for UT basketball games there too, and Texas has a pretty rabid fanbase.

Anyway, thanks to NIN for hitting Austin, it was a great show. Peace.

Looks good, what kind of camera did you use? Was it a video camera or a point and shoot with video ?

05/13/09 12:12 AM

Yeah, I think there were a lot of factors playing into the crowd reaction, and none of them had to do with the band. This was my third time seeing NIN and it was the best, loved the set list and you guys played so well.

Austin is a laid back place, never really seen a substantial mosh pit or anything of the sort here. It's just not a big metal scene, gotta go to San Antonio for that stuff. I believe the Austin crowd is more the Jane's Addiction crowd and they showed that tonight, Jane's got a great reaction. It just kind of comes with the territory when you have two very big and very different bands.

FEC is not a great concert venue, either. It does eat crowd noise (I was in the seats and people were screaming their heads off and singing along but I couldn't hear anyone outside my general vicinity). I'm surprised NIN sounded so good in that place, you were by far the best sounding band of the night.

Plus, you're playing a set list aimed towards the more hardcore fans, which we fucking love, but the trade off is the audience reaction of the majority since they aren't familiar with these songs.

All that aside though, from one huge fan to Trent and the rest of the band... thank you guys so much. It was such a thrill to see some of the songs you played and you were in top form. Really. I've had a rough week and this show put me in such a good mood.

05/13/09 12:13 AM

The show was amazing. Unfortunately, the first NIN show I've had to enjoy from the seats and not on the floor, since I somehow managed to miss out on the presale. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to get a floor ticket, and Frank Erwin does not make it easy to sneak onto the floor. Particularly glad to hear Dead Souls, La Mer, The Fragile, The Way Out Is Through, I Do Not Want This, and Lights In The Sky; all the best moshing songs went mostly unmoshed, and that sucked. Seems like a lot of the hardcore fans were in the stands and JA fans dominated the floor, the crowd seemed more alive during their set. I was there to see NIN, but JA put on a great show. Thanks for coming to Austin, and I hope I'll be attending the reunion show a few years down the road. This is the greatest live show there is.

05/13/09 12:17 AM

Another AMAZING performance.

Thank you, NIN, for performing The Fragile! Alas, still no live performance of Reptile for me but I'll live smiling smiley

Personally speaking, I wasn't dancing or jumping like usual because I was very much aware that this may be the last I get to see Nine Inch Nails in concert. I wanted to absorb every note and embed each song in my memory.

I think that 'the knowing' there may be no NIN concerts for a while definitely put some people in a sentimental mood, just wanting to enjoy the live performance and remember it all. And I think the fact that cameras were allowed also kept most people busy trying to capture what may be their last show for a while.

Sorry, Trent, and company, if the crowd's vibe felt somewhat off tonight. But please know that the band's efforts were immensely appreciated and Austin couldn't have asked for a better show. It was AMAZING.

I have loved Nine Inch Nails since Pretty Hate Machine and I always will. Thank you for two decades of pure quality music. Happy Anniversary!!!

It was actually a Sony CyberShot 10.1 and I was thinking it was bad because the damn auto-focus kept catching the fruit of the fog machine's labors/strobe lights and not focusing on the action. I know it sure as hell didn't wanna take pics of the Jane's Addiction Naked-Lady-Panels before I left. *sad face*
