VigilX posted:SSSC sucked ass but I will say that Tom Morello's guitar solo on the third to last song was cool. Trent came out at the end of their set, but it was an SSSC song it didn't really fix much. I didn't realize Andy Dick could play drums either.
NIN was cool... I wish they would have played Now I'm Nothing instead of just playing Terrible Lie, but whatever. I finally got to hear The Becoming and The Way Out is Through so I'm happy. I've heard the Fragile live before, but it's been a while so that was nice.
I thought the lighting setup was pretty lazy even for a band that wasn't trying to impress us with a huge show. Even bands like Garbage with average stage production have better setups.
Didn't waste my time with JA.
It was my 25th NIN show and my last one for a while (if he ever comes back as NIN I'll definitely come back) and even though it wasn't the best, it was pretty cool.
I could not disagree with you more!! Haha Man, these threads have been so interesting to read --- everyone has such varied opinions across the board. I, for one, have been really enjoying the entire bill for this tour.
TR joining SSSC for “Kick Out the Jams” (MC5! ah – such a classic!!) was such a great surprise and was really the highlight of the show for me. And Jane’s vibe was perfect for this venue – and the weather. Not being from Southern California, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the whole scene, but I really found there to be a laid back energy amongst the crowd. That seemed to carry into Nails’ set too – lots of down-tempo numbers and instrumental heavy tunes. I enjoyed it, but this set was far different than the other shows I have been to so far. I felt less like I was at a NIN show and more like a jam band (not in terms of the tunes, but the way they were delivered. If that even makes sense.)
Since this was my first trip to San Diego, my friends and I did the tourist thing all day in lieu of the line. I realized one of the real draws to this pre-sale thing when, despite the hugely ridiculous line to get in, I was able to just walk right in after getting my tickets. I don’t see any way that all of those folks could have made it in prior to SSSC’s set!
I always enjoy reading people’s takes on the crowd; I saw someone post earlier that this pit was active, and I did not have that experience at all. I was a couple of people back from the rail (on the JMJ side of things) and it was pretty subdued. No complaints here, but it was strange -- I’m pretty sure no one ever even touched me, not much movement at all in my area. Maybe that’s what happens in the venues with larger pits (same sort of experience I had in Tampa, which was a similar layout).
Random thoughts:
I feel the need to declare that I HATE “Hurt” as a closer. Seriously, just when the show is hitting a peak, it is closed out with such a downer!! I think it’s a great song – no doubt about it – but I could do without seeing it in the set…especially as a closer! Argh.
The bit with JMJ playing tiny castanet-like finger cymbals is so great (during “the Becoming”, maybe??). It really made me appreciate all of the tiniest little details that are going into making this music sound great as a four piece.
I love it when shit gets a bit fucked up during the set – like when the PA cut out in the intro to “Terrible Lie.” It’s a nice reminder that this is really happening in the now – that it is real, imperfect. The mistakes (for lack of a better word) never ruin anything – they just make it seem less rehearsed (kind of like the anti-LITS thing). Also, TR getting pissed onstage reminds me of the Self Destruct days and always perks me up a bit. haha
I am loving the lack of flash/lights/mechanics on this tour. I don't miss the spectacle - I like it being about the performance and not the production!!
