Well, what a night.
Got down there at 4:30, picked up my janesaddiction.com pre-sale tickets pretty quick.
NIN were good, nothing incredible. The one time I had seen them prior in 2006 was on the lawn at the Ampitheatre, they were alright back then. I wasn't blown away last night either. They are not really an "incredible live band" in the way that Radiohead or Tool are. I was hoping for some lesser covered material given this supposed to be a farewell tour, a stripped down tour where the band's set is not constricted due to lighting arrangements, etc. So I was a bit surprised to hear a somewhat typical set that has not varied much from any others on this tour. I kind of hoped to maybe that rather than getting Wish, March of the Pigs, Head Like a Hole...again (although those rocked still), we might some things not typicall performed frquently. I love The Fragile, but wished we had gotten a few more tracks from that. The band wasted like 7 minute boring everone to death with "metal" when killer tracks like We're In This Together and Just Like You Imagined he barely ever performs live. La Mer or Something I Can Never have would have been awesome. I don't know, I was glad to be on the floor quite close to the band and experience a tight visceral performance, but I guess I just kept hoping for more and thought the band sort of were just going through the motions. Although I did love hearing Burn and screaming my fucking face off to that one.
Jane's setlist per request:
I have seen JA before, 2001 with some forgettable bassist at the Air Canada Centre, at the time I was 18 and I absolutely loved that concert. Last night was not quite as good, in a sense. The setlist was incredible last night...I had absolutely no complaints, they basically played every great song in their catalog (minus Classic Girl), but.....I love Perry but man, it kind of shows what 15+ years of heavy drug use will do to someone. His voice on the two Jane's albums is so fucking incredible and on a number of tracks last night he just could not nearly reach most of the high registers, a lot of his voice now unfortunately just sounds like another singer, I mean it's Perry....but it's basically a slowed down, two octaves lower and lacking intensity on half the tracks...version of Perry.
Although a lot of the set he did manage to nail most the vocals (Stop, Summertime Rolls, Ocean Size all sounded great). I was a little sad they opened with Three Days, because although I fucking looove that song, it really took him several songs to get his voice going and that song would be a great set closer (before an encore). I saw the band in 2001 at the Air Canada Centre (sans Eric of course) and that sound was bloody amazing. Clearly even in the 8 years since then the voice has deteriorated a bit more. On Up The Beach and Then She Did, I could barely hear him.
The band sounded fucking amazing. Navarro is Navarro, he loves the attention and the ladies and looking like a rockstar, but who gives a shit, they guy absolutely murdered every single fucking riff and solo and pulled it off perfectly, he made it look so effortless. Eric and Stephen held down the rhythm perfectly. It was still great seeing them together, Stephen looked like he was having so so much fun.
I first bought Nothing's Shocking and Ritual when I was 12-13 years old, I'm 26 now so I've been listening to them for like half my life and in that time both those albums have been listened to many, many, many times. Those songs are so fucking ingrained in my mind and while I loved hearing so many of them tonight, I just wish Perry's voice could have been better. I wish the sound at the Ampitheatre was a bit better (then again it might have been not the best because I was 3rd row on the floor for Jane's, not the best spot for sound.)...I moved back later in the set and the sound was better and Perry's voice definitely improved for the encore, he just needed more wine. Overall the setlist was fucking awesome. Ted (Sex is Violent), Three Days, Summertime Rolls, Stop, Jane Says, Then She Did, Up The Beach.....they pretty much did everything I wanted. Still not a big fan of Whores or Pigs In Zen life.
I thought Street Sweeper were dope live. Don't know if I would buy their album, they were fun and had great energy, Seeing Tom Morello up close was absolutely fucking sick. A night seeing two of the best guitarists of my generation is always a good time.
Still though, great concert, I had an awesome time. The floor at the Ampitheatre is really one of the best spots in the city to watch a big concert, it's pretty spacious and behind you is 17,000 people.
oh and, I GOT DAVE'S PICK!
he flicked it in the crowd, it was one he was definitely using and it hit my girlfriend in the face, she quickly grabbed it before anyone could really notice and shoved it in my hand, so now I have it in my wallet
