Awesome live! and very very cold omg !!! ahah

I'm compelled to apologise.

This is my second post on (what is to me) the "new" NIN forum. My first post was a month ago, and it was a ban-able rant venting against Reznor with regard to him ditching Danny Lohner, ROBIN FINCK, and Charlie Clouser. Basically, because of that narrow-minded prejudice I haven't kept in touch with the NIN line-up in two years (I still book the day off work, put on the T-shirt and buy every issue on the first day of release - offshoots like Ghosts and The Slip included). To cut a long story short I only found out that Robin was back in the band 5 minutes before they came on stage.

It was like Christmas morning.

Unveiling that guy was like unwrapping presents from yourself.

Robin dropped a stentorian riff on Discipline with a semi-acoustic for fuck's sake. All done with the same unknowing attitude of modesty. A gentleman. His change of guitars (to us grateful know-nothings) a signifier of his eclecticism - from face-shredding to an effortless sway in the new funked-up catalogue re-works, to the dignity of conjuring those sparse notes from Hurt. (When the other guy did it it looked like one ape picking nits out of another drugged ape).

Anyway. The Nine Inch Nails I saw tonight were stripped-down, lean, lithe and cruel. The way I like my women. The NIN tonight were funky, functional, sensitive and wonderfully mean-spirited. Burnwas like Hierynomous Bosch getting a synthesizer for his birthday. A wonderful off-Broadway Hell on Earth.

The NIN I saw tonight were the best fucking band in the world. Look. I'm 31. I'm at that age now where I'm preparing myself to be disappointed by the bands I love on their second time around me. Walking away from the gig convincing yourself you enjoyed it while convincing yourself that it wasn't down to nostalgia. The gig I saw tonight made me feel the way I did when I first pressed play on Downward Spiral in '94.

Can't say fairer than that.

i was in the front row and jesus christ it was amazing grinning smiley

The only qualm I had with the show was the lack of a separate keyboard/synth player, meaning the drummer had to keep moving back and forth, delaying songs somewhat.

And it was too short, but other wise, fucking AMAZING.

Also FINCK aghghg

That was incredible! I was right up by the front and could see the steam rising off Trent! And they played 'The Big Come Down'! All that was missing was the crowd's sense of rhythm (the clapping for 'Hurt' was way off), but otherwise the show was damn near perfect; I just wish they played for a little longer.

Does anyone have the setlist? At a guess, I'd say it's something like:

Home
1,000,000
Terrible Lie
Something I Can Never Have
March Of The Pigs
The Becoming
The Big Come Down
The Line Begins To Blur
The Frail (?)
Wish
The Hand That Feeds
Head Like A Hole
Hurt

The order's all jumbled up and I may have missed out on something, but at least this is a start.

Cian, thanks for being the second set of eyes to confirm the steam rising off of Trent. I wasn't sure with all the fog but thought it was awesome to know he was working so hard up there. :-D Especially great as we were all pretty drenched from the earlier downpour and the cold. My first time at Oxegen much less any European festival and really enjoyed it. Loved that people were always singing around me, even if nobody on stage was. Props to the person with the inflatable penis traded to Katy Perry for an inflatable strawberry. May it rest in pieces.

Best part was getting 'the big comedown' as a few days before I thought about hearing it again and said to myself, 'TR better play it as this festival to make it special'. :-D

Thanks to all the kind people in Dublin who helped me when I was confused and always had a question, and best of all thanks to the fellow fans around me in the pit in front of Justin, I'm sorry I didn't get all of your names. You made a great time even greater!

07/13/09 1:02 PM

I saw the steam rising off Trent as well! It was a pretty cool site to see! Can't believe they played The Becoming, The Big Come Down, Burn and Wish in a row! Set was way too short but I'd say that was due to festival time restrictions.

The setlist order was:
1. Home
2. 1,000,000
3. Terrible Lie
4. Discipline
5. March of the Pigs
6. Something I Can Never Have
7. The Becoming
8. The Big Come Down
9. Burn
10. Wish
11. The Hand That Feeds
12. Head Like A Hole
13. Hurt

Anyone from Tipperary here ?
Was with these 3 girls at the show and I didn't get to say goodbye to them, wanted to try and contact them sad smiley

Thanks for the updated setlist Spleen; I'd forgotten 'Discipline' and 'Burn'. Are you sure that 'The Line Begins To Blur' wasn't in there somewhere as well? I'm almost certain I remember hearing it, along with some other song for which Ilan played the keyboard and I think may have been 'The Frail' or something from Still.

Yeah I'm positive that's the setlist. Definitely no Line Begins to Blur (unfortunately as that would have been brilliant) The Frail definitely wasn't in there but for a few seconds before Something I Can Never Have myself and Spleen thought The Frail was about to be played.

The steam rising off Trent was unreal. It could only happen in a colder climate. Although not quite as cold as anyone is saying, in fact, I wouldn't have called it cold at all. A bit wet yes, but not really all that cold. All the same, I don't live in LA!

They were on fire, Trent looked really into it, from his (extremely sexual) writhing and groping of himself during March of the Pigs to the way he was stumbling around clutching his head during Something I Can Never Have he was absolutely full of energy.

A highlight.

Anyone have the Jane's Addiction setlist ?

07/14/09 6:03 AM

Still havent come down from the gig..was incredible, just getting my voice back now, Trent worked his socks off for us, i'll never forget the night. A pal of mine who didnt really know NIN was blown away by them, he felt the power of it all...Something i can never have was so intense and The Becoming was amazing. Was great to be in a big crowd of real NIN fans aswell...a good bunch of people. Pity it was a bit short, guess they had no choice with the festival timeslots?

07/14/09 6:28 AM

Class gig, Jane's were the perfect warm up to get in the mood as well.

07/14/09 11:01 AM

the gig was unreal,I have been a fan for years and never had the opportunity to see them before but made it my bussiness to get up the front.the athmosphere was amazing, the guys played their hearts out and put on a great show.I got a thumbs up from Trent passing the staff car park from his bus so was well chuffed.

I was delighted to see Robin i dont think it could have been more perfect.the only thing was i had no camera for pics,if anyone has any could they let me know or even try find me on bebo www.bebo.com/alternatee

07/14/09 1:07 PM

Pretty amazing show alright. I'm another first timer and although I felt the setlist was a bit short, Trent and the lads really seemed to put a lot into it and the crowd were also really in great form. Also I got to hear The Big Comedown so I'm happy grinning smiley

I'm not sure at all about this but I think the Jane's Addiction set was something like this:

1. Whores
2. Three Days
3. Stop
4. Mountain Song
5. Been Caught Stealing
6. Summertime Rolls
7. Ocean Size
8. Ted, Just Admit It
9. Jane Says
