is hardly relevant. You cannot have a perfect show. Aesthetics are subjective.

Of course you can. I'm not interested in watching a version of Nine Inch Nails that pretends that the (recent) past doesn't exist : leave that for the nostalgia crowd. I'm interested in the future ; we're spending the rest of our lives in there.

Yeah, you're falling all over yourself here. Your argument isn't holding up at all. You claiming that the show wasn't perfect because they didn't play certain tracks is what your take on the performance was, not some sort of valid objective metaphysical statement for us all to hold as truth - this you make quite clear by all the first person reference. But then you fail catastrophically by shifting to what we're doing and thus what should follow for the whole, for us all to experience the perfect show, based on the band playing a perfect (objectively referenced) show. You're chopping and changing like a shape-shifter.

Aesthetics are subjective. There is no perfect, infallible aesthetic product that represents an objective truth; a value of good, or pleasing, or correct over bad, or unpleasing, or incorrect. Thus the band cannot play a perfect show. What can happen however is that you experience what you perceive to be perfect; and this clearly didn't happen. But it does not follow that when I state that 'The show was perfect for me because they played a set respective of their twenty year career and Gary Numan came on stage, and they avoided all the shitty pop music off of The Slip and Year Zero' that I am wrong.

You're not wrong - opinion is subjective.

However it does appear that anyone who doesn't fawn over the official line gets a drubbing. I've loved NIN since 1989 ; but I wouldn't be so biased as to think everything they have ever released or ever show has always been flawless. I'm sure most people on here would find something regarding NIN they think is imperfect : and that's opinion.

All of us, as a collective whole, are going to spend the rest of our lives - the bit that isn't now, but one day will be the present - in what is now 'the future', but in the future will be 'now'.

Now, that's a fact - unless you're going to die in the next couple of minutes. However, from my perspective, I would've preferred less nostalgia and more of a current setlist. It was not a perfect show in my opinion, and I never said my opinion was objective or valid for anyone but me.

I wouldn't boast about that.

I read your review very differently. I picked up a certain tone in their that was one of disappointment for us all. But hey. I had a great time. My back is still bruised, and I wasn't subjected to either Discipline, or The Beginning of the End. Only was bad enough, [EDIT - At previous London shows] and the fact that they still play The Hand That Feeds and Survivalism really grates on me.

Ok, that's cool. The only disappointment I had was a lack of newer stuff - "God Given", "Capital G", "Discipline", "Letting You", "Echoplex" in favour of stuff I've seen them do several times ("Reptile" for example). But that's not a major issue, really.

07/20/09 4:05 PM

Hey, thought I'd chuck in my 2 pence...

This was my first (and hopefully not only) NIN show. I found everything OK, especially since I'd resigned myself to not going after not being able to get any tickets until 2 weeks before the show.

While I don't have any other NIN live experience to compare it to it certainly lived up to expectations I'd raised watching numerous live videos. I would have liked to have seen a little more of the newer stuff ("Discipline" is one of my personal recent faves) but I accepted that Gary Numan's appearance probably took its place on the set list. And "Down In It" was an awesome surprise, as was "Heresy". So all in all I was surprised and blown away for most of the set.

I was hoping for a final goodbye after Hurt, literally Trent saying goodbye not another song (though I wouldn't have said no to that). Though I may have missed him say that in all the cheering.

I've only been listening to NIN for about 5-6 years and this gig finally made me feel a part of the community. Now it's just that waiting game thing, something I've never had to do with NIN before, I've only had to read about it.

To me this was the greatest show I've ever been to, I managed to get close to my heroes (not VIP close though /jealousy) and had a hell of a night. Thank you Trent and co for an awesome bunch of memories. I hope this is not the total end of touring, just a break for a while, as I need to see NIN again. Can't believe I missed so many of their old tours.

07/20/09 4:07 PM

Oh, and I hope there's a bootleg audio floating around somewhere, and if anyone needs/wants a cover artist I'm available.

i boast about it if i want to and what i meant was.....me and my boyfriend have both been fans for 19-20 years, we met through being fans of NIN and been together for 11 years now, i KNOW my man i KNOW how he feels about things and esp NIN, i KNEW he was DIEING to go to those shows but he was always thinking aboout the exchange rate and i thought if i dont do it we wont go, i knew i could sell the tix if he would go mental about it but i KNEW he wouldnt grinning smiley so YES i took his card and ordered tix, he wasnt too happy when he first found out, wasnt mad either but in the end he was the one spending more money then i was, as time went on he loved what i did more and more and after the gig he TOLD ME HE WAS SO FREAKING HAPPY I DID IT BECAUSE IF I HADNT WE WOULD HAVE MISSED THIS SHOW so yeah I AM BOASTING ABOUT IT................

no i am not ONLY into NIN because Trent is so FREAKING SEXY, to be honest I HATED the "head like a hole" video because the guy - being Trent - was so icky (i was a young teenager at the time) but i LOVED the song....it wasnt until the tour he did with Bowie in ´95 when i saw an interview on MTV with Trent and Bowie that i started to find him good looking....today yes i find him extremely sexy and my boyfriend doesnt mind me fancying him......seeing a great live show with an extremely sexy man on stage is NEVER a bad thing for a woman....same as a guy seeing a movie (or even a live show) with an extremely sexy woman in it makes the movie a lot better (dont even try to deny it)...
ggeee what is your problem ???? i LOVED meeting Trent and seeing he is as good looking in real life as on pix- or even better looking if anything-....not photoshoped pix like all the glamour pix these days are so yeah i am a FUCKING HAPPY CHAP

to me the bit that is now is all that matters.
now is ALWAYS.

thanks to my health (or lack thereof) i'm not sure if i will be even there in ''the future''

this is way to heavy for a thread celebrating nin and jane's at the O2,but now you know why NOW is so important to me.

The Manchester show is on dimeadozen. A guy commented on that one saying he would upload his London recording, so I guess it will show up in due time. The taper I think will have to 'master' the recording and such.

Smaller venues (Brixton etc) are nearly always better than these large arenas but the O2 is about the best large arena I have been to. And when you are down the front it doesn't really matter all that much how many people are behind you.

The lights were awesome, very low over the stage to create a very intense vibe and all white lights, the same idea that Bowie used on his 1979 tour. Very simple and very effective.

This was the 14 time I've seen NIN streching back 18 years and Trent has never failed to impress. I stood next to Gary Numan at the Brixton Academy in 1999 so it fun seeing him onstage with the band.

You never know, the band have had long hiatus in the past so Trent may come back and play live in a few years time. Who knows (Trent I guess!!), we can only hope.

Anyway, on to Sonisphere for one last time......
