I liked this show. Nice choice of songs. They seemed to go for a more relaxed set this time. Shame to have people talking throughout it and some twats shouting at Trent. Someone shouted something along the lines of 'Get off the stage you c**t bring on Metallica'. I was pissed off to say the least.

08/02/09 4:15 PM

I got knocked out during Limp Bizkit and begged the doctors to let me return to the arena in time! It was definitely worth it. I don't mind getting a concussion if it means I get to see NIN smiling smiley

I liked the set list a lot, although my friend said he preferred the Reading set from a couple of years ago, which was apparently heavier. This was the first time I've seen them and I was really happy with what was played.

Made all the injuries worthwhile smiling smiley

Moral is definitely "don't go to the front if you're a 5'4" female" though.

We played a purposely quiet, intimate set. I figured it would either enrage or baffle the metal audience... but to our amazement it went over great!
Really fun set to play in that environment.

I'm glad it went down so well. Festival goers can be complete dicks sometimes.

This is a nice confirmation against the rumours flying round that you were 'told' to play a quiet set and not upstage the headlining act. Glad it went well.

(Thanks again for giving us loud and fast in London though!)

I would just like to say that it's a fucking insult that they let Metallica headline and not NIN, just had to get that off my chest.
Glad you enjoyed performing.

08/02/09 5:39 PM

There were a lot of dicks today. Probably the most annoying idiots I've ever come across at a gig! And the fucking wankers with the flags! There were too many of them getting in the way...

Anyway whining aside, I really enjoyed the slow and heavy set today. It was great to hear 'Something I Can Never Have' and 'Lights in the Sky'. I've not managed to see them live in person before so thanks for those Trent. Shame it was over so soon though. Waaah!

I thought that same as what Dr Lloyd said though. NIN would have definitely upstaged Metallica if they'd have gone down the heavy and fast paced route. Much as I like Metallica, I obviously love NIN more smiling smiley

All the best for the future, Trent. Thanks for some amazing shows

By the way, was this festival shot with plenty of cameras - any chance of live broadcasts going up to catch on t.v., or failing that a torrent upload?

08/02/09 5:25 PM

Just back from Sonisphere Great show but just a little short. Thought Mr T was a little pissed at the crowd for some reason. It seemed a little quiet and I was right up front so maybe he just wasn't feeling it or maybe he's been on tour for so long now that he is feeling too much of it. Anyhows. A big thankyou for allowing me to see you 1 1/2 times in the same year (had to leave half way through the o2 cause of a migrane). Take a good rest after your last remaining dates, you've way earned it...

All the best

P.s. Bet you can't stay away from the road for too long...See you soon

I didn't think he seemed pissed, just quiet. It was an amazing show, I'm so happy I went.

Channel 4 are going to show it on the 14th or something. I saw it on the screens between Limp Bizkit and NIN

08/02/09 6:18 PM

i think NIN should have headlined the sunday! linkin park were pretty good but considering NIN have never headlined a fest over here and it is possibly their last gig it would have been amazing! and im pretty sure there were as many NIN shirts around as metallica ones. anyway im home and need alot of sleep.

p.s. sorry for the possible shit stirring on twitter. i put what i was told. ill learn next time x

08/02/09 6:30 PM

It was a nice set, just wish it had been longer. I saw a lot of NIN shirts which was good. I'm really glad to have been able to get tickets as I was unable to make the 15th date.

Will see if my photos came out ok and get them posted.

Couple of things - the setlist was great after a whole weekend of guitars it was nice, at sunset, to have a really good slow 'goodbye' set. I really appreciated it after Alice in Chains and so did my daughter (who is 6). Also the songs were a complete surprose as i thought NIN may take the easy optiion of a fast and heavy set to please the metal crowd - which is why it was so good that NIN played to their strengths and had the majority of a metal crowd watching and listening. Thanks for all the memories NIN and have a really good break - when you come back i certainly will be waiting.

Now the not so good - i think it is out of order to call all Metallica fans idiots, particularly as my wife is a massive fans of theirs.....so please don't throw out general comments about a huge group of people worldwide who follow Metallica just as pastionately as you follow NIN.

As for NIN headlining instead of Metallica that would have only happened if it wasn't a metal festival - at the moment Metallica are HUGE in the metal world and could easily sell out a festival like this three times in row. Personally i can take them or leave them i am just pleased i seen some of my all time fave bands in one weekend (NIN, AIC, H&H, Anthrax).

Cheers

Really enjoyed the setlist. Beautiful choice of songs, and I loved that it was a middle finger up to a festival that they were clearly above. Very happy to hear LITS. Opening with The Way Out is Through worked really well. The set was 100% in daylight, which would have been bizarre if it was a faster paced set.

It was really something hearing songs like TDS and Gone, Still in cloudy daylight, with a slight breeze running over you. It felt peaceful in spite of the crowd, and I'm sure I spent a lot of the set with my eyes shut and a dopey smile on my face.

I was lucky to be largely surrounded by those who liked/respected Nine Inch Nails, apart from the odd person who kept shouting for Metallica. I was tempted to cause GBH, but it wasn't worth losing my barrier spot.

Many thanks to the Metallica Fan Club members (a few of whom read this board, I understand) who looked after me tonight, and at Werchter. They really helped to make these festivals fun and safe.

Glad I went, but glad it's not my last show.

Elsewhere in the festival: Machine Head making 20 circle pits at once, Fred Durst going on about Trent Reznor's influence on him, before playing that song that quotes all the NIN songs, Justin and Trent watching the LB set from the side of the stage - I'm guessing out of morbid curiosity like the rest of us.

I agree with you here - I'm partial to a bit of metal myself so really enjoyed Anthrax / Lamb of God (although on the Sunday it was so nice to have a quiet set from NIN to counteract THREE whole bands in a row of the 'woooagh' variety). I LOVED the NIN set, what there was of it, why finish 10 mins early? Bit annoying to suffer through the weekend with tonsilitis to find that Limp Bloody Biscuit had a longer set, especially when I was enjoying it so much. I just wasn't up to staying after NIN and went home so missed Metallica. (PS I never thought I'd hear Lights In The Sky live, nice)

The Way Out is Through
Wish
I Do Not Want This
Something I Can Never Have
Gone, Still
The Frail
The Wretched
Non Entity
Lights in the Sky
The Downward Spiral
Hurt

Amazing show. Only went for NIN, had a great spot. Had no interest in any of the other bands. Shame we didn't get The Prodigy or Pendulum or Primal Scream on the bill like some of the other Sonisphere lineups.

08/03/09 3:11 AM

I enjoyed the setlist, would've liked Reptile to creep in there but can't have it all. But urgh... some songs ruined for me by neanderthal esque characters...especially Hurt. Trying to lose myself in it and some bellends belting out the wrong lyrics in between burps...eesh

08/03/09 3:35 AM

Loved the setlist - Lights In The Sky is one of my favaourite songs of all time, and I think this was only the 5th time they'd ever performed it, so I was in heaven - particularly as I spend last weekend learning it on the piano - I'm a bass player, but my wife's got a piano, so that was weird!

Contrary to what some people are saying, I thought Trent was very intense during the heavier songs, jumping around all over the place, so I didn't get that vibe at all. SICNH I've never been a major fan of before, but I was converted seeing it in the flesh, so emotional. Still don't know why we only got 50 minutes, when they were down for an hour, not like they were running late......

And as for the 'Metallica fans are dicks' comment - NIN and Metallica are my two favourite bands, and I do my best to appreciate all kinds of music (within reason!(), so - uncalled for.

Anyway - Trent, Robin, Justin, Ilan - thank you for 2 very memorable shows over the last couple of weeks, for very different reasons. You're disappearance from the live scene is a great shame, but I hope that this means we'll get more great new music.

Soon!

Really fun set to play in that environment.

Brilliant setlist! Totally juxtaposed the Manchester setlist I had seen a few weeks earlier (which was also fantastic) in terms of the kind of set you went for. It'll be a shame never to see such a fantastic live band (arguably the best NIN lineup in my opinion) play again in the forseeable future, so for now I and Manchester bid you a fond farewell, and wish you the very best for the final shows you have lined up.

08/03/09 3:43 AM

I was very pleased with the set! I think most fans would have enjoyed it.
Personally my highlight was the frail/the wretched.
I was glad I was there to see it and HOPE its not the last time I get to see NIN.
I left Knebworth with a smile on my face smiling smiley

08/03/09 3:50 AM

Driving over I stated I hoped for SICNH and anything from The Slip to be played and if they do a cover then Dead Souls. Did have the feeling during the day that NIN where the 'odd band out'!

Had the folk with the Yorkshire flag down near the front next to me - seeing that flying made me feel at home!

Like many have already stated thanks Trent (for all your work), Robin, Justin and Ilan for both the Manchester and Knebworth shows. They were worth the costs and trips from Cardiff.

08/03/09 3:53 AM

Just an amazing show. I think we were all expecting a fast and furious type show but this was thoughtful and emotional and felt like a pretty good farewell considering it was a festival and not a full NIN show. Afterward I heard some people in the crowd complaining that they didnt play Head Like A Hole or that the band looked bored but I couldnt disagree more, I think it was a very carefully considered setlist and the band looked totally involved.

Overall the crowd near me seemed really into it...except the idiot next to me that kept trying to call her friend on her mobile all the way through Hurt. I wish people could be a little more respectful of the fact that some people actually bother to to go to these things to listen to the music!

Anyway, apart from that minor complaint everything else was amazing, especially Something I Can Never Have which may or may not have bought a tear to my eye.

Really hope they show some of the set on TV

Trent, thanks for much. After seeing you at the O2 earlier, I'm so glad I got to see you one final time. The tracks were beautiful - all the best for your future smiling smiley

08/03/09 4:23 AM

Trent, thanks. Some might think it brave to ignore 'the hits' at a show like that, but I think it worked brilliantly, and I appreciated the chance to hear a very different set from the O2 show. Both were brilliant in their very different ways. With the possible exception of the first night at Brixton '05 (when I was one of the meet & greeters), these were my favourite NIN shows. I hope these aren't the last UK shows ever, but if this is the absolute end for NIN live in Europe, you've ended on a high. Best of luck for the future!

Seriously doubt that NIN will be shown - a Sonisphere twitter sugegsted that no filming was allowed for their set, apart from for the screens. Don't know if anyone can confirm or deny this?

BTW - at the end of The Wretched, I've never noticed it before, but always assumed the fade out plucked guitar sound was Robin, but it's actually Trent playing some minitiature keyboard (I think). Bizzare!

It was (how best to describe it!) a bit of wood, with a few (6?) bits of different sized metal pieces attached.

What annoyed me most was the people in NIN t-shirts that talked all the way through Gone, Still and The Frail.

Who would have though that Head Like A Hole wouldn't be played? I banked on that to be played. At first I thought they'd come back on after Hurt and play The Hand That Feeds and finish with HLAH.
