Ever since NIN appeared on radar, with HEAD LIKE A HOLE, yes count them...20 years ago, I've felt they were a force to be reckoned with on a serious scale. The shape of things to come even though I'm a baby boomer. If you listen closely you can hear threads of NIN in other recent name acts' material, proof that NIN had taken things to another level. I've seen a few major acts in my time on different continents, but never have I seen a band that moves and plays with so much energy, rhythmically, sonically, vocally, lyrically. I thought NIN would break up as many good bands seem to do, long before I ever got to see them perform live, but as fate would have it, they performed in Manila. Whew, talk about a proper alignment of forces, both local and Stateside. The band live was more than their records and videos belie and after seeing and hearing NIN live, there is basically no way this type of music and energy can be faithfully captured on a recording or a video. It is something that needs to be experienced live, in true N-dimension, superstring theory, Reznorian curvature tensor. This is the latest incarnation of NIN still with Reznor at the helm. From Ilan Rubin's unrelenting headbanging, double kik time signatures, Justin Meldal-Johnsen's ever present bass lines from the abyss, to Robin Finck's very un-Guns and Roses screeching nitro glycerine pick works, E-bow, bar-drag, lap steel, whammy pedal tones, all giving Trent Reznor's ripping vocal chords a suitable framing and something to spit about, amid the manic dance moves each member exuded during the entire set. The tour support crew were as much a part of the show, swapping guitars between songs, moving keyboards around the stage, fixing and replacing thrown microphone stands, kicked over Marshall cabs. flying and skateboarding guitars, and operating the loops, effects, lights, fog machine, and FOH mix, that were part of the band's set list, all in expert precision. Everyone in the band switched off and doubled on keys, synths, xylophone, three guitars going over loops, with Justin's and Robin's backup vocals adding credence to the anthemic lyric lines. Your eyes as well as your ears were treated to much slight of hand. All highly unpredictable.
Then there were the songs...
If this NIN is coming to your town, do yourself a favor and get your ass in a seat.
