So I just arrived in taipei and have to say I'm soooo happy I decided to come after all! This place is AMAZING!!! I'm visualizing myself learning mandarin and moving here!
I think Rob Sheridan would have loved this place... I have the urge to take photos of everyhing which is very unlike me.
Was really happy to have fellow forumers Scissortail and Skot on same plane and bus, and anyone in Taipei don't forget the meetup tomorrow 5pm longshan station, for a night of exploring temples and night markets :-)

Oh yea you're right. Should we consider Non-Entity to be in the WT era as well? As much as I love TDS and The Fragile the most, it'll be nice to hear songs from the other albums...

08/11/09 9:27 AM

Sad that only one song each from the three latest albums were played. Year Zero is my favourite album. Still the fact that they played the more rarely played stuff like La Mer, Burn, Downward Spiral, I'm Afraid of Americans was pretty awesome.

08/11/09 10:20 AM

Beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL show. Only thing was, I was really waiting for 'The Big Come Down' and I WANTED ROBIN TO BE CLOSE TO ME AND TRENT ONLY WENT TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CROWD. Oh well, SINGAPORE GOT 'CLOSER'!!!!! Felt damn blaady good to be yelling 'I WANT TO FUCK YOU LIKE AN ANIMAL'! Justin M-J made eye contact too and gave an impressed face! Got Ilan's drumstick too. Awesome. And of course, it was great to meet some of you guys!

Now I'm just being bloody annoying and Twittering @ the NIN boys like mad about Singapore!

08/11/09 10:23 AM

I've really enjoyed the interaction in the forum in the lead up to the show. Will miss such a cool group of people
I'll probably still be posting in here in months to come! You can't get rid of me!!

What's this Trent on a chair business thing? That picture isn't loading.

And I'm alternating between smiling inanely in public and grieving.
Thank you ii53, whoever you are, you are helping tremendously.
Thank heavens for Youtube.

My girlfriend (I semi-dragged her along) who is not a NIN fan said that show was "sublime" and "inspirational". I couldn't agree more. It's not every day one gets to see their idol(s) in person.

Wish there was more stuff from Year Zero and The Slip, but those are minor issues. I got to see NIN live. That's all that matters. Thank you Trent.

Online Only - Nine Inch Nails concert review

Trent Reznor nails it on the head
by Christopher Toh

I MUST admit to not being a big Nine Inch Nails (NIN) fan. I know what I like - five songs - and I like what I know. That's about it. And NIN was a band I liked half a lifetime ago.

I'm usually wary about watching bands perform after their so-called heyday, because it might just spoil that mental image that I have of them. And you can't avoid comparing their present with their past.

For instance, when we saw the pictures of Trent Reznor now - beefy and built-up - as compared with his scrawny frame a decade ago (he was Marilyn Manson before Marilyn Manson) we couldn't help but wonder if his music would also change from being scathing and slashing to chunky and clunky.

But if there was one thing that stood out gig at Fort Canning Park on Monday night, it was how Reznor was seemingly incapable of tiring. Especially since the concert consisted of the band performing song-after-song with nary any space to breathe.

A couple of "thank you"s was all he said throughout the show. But that was fine by the crowd on the hill, who lapped up every distorted syllable, every deafening beat and every dissonant note. After all, they'd come to hear Nine Inch Nails perform, not watch a chat show.

Reznor led the band through a set-list that contained their hits Closer, Hurt, Head Like A Hole and their collaboration with David Bowie, I'm Afraid Of Americans. The stage lighting was set to "blinding", and it seemed able to light up a HDB block, I think.

People bopped their heads, had their arms raised, and cavorted where they could. Not even the nearness of the speakers - set to "deafening" - deterred the crowd at the front of the stage from enjoying themselves. Such that, when the concert ended just over two hours later, the fans still demanded more.

It was fun to see people letting loose and just prancing about uninhibited. It was fun to see both middle-aged admirers and tweeny-bopper fans enjoying themselves. And the sheer energy transmitted by the band was obviously catching - I wouldn't have stood up for two hours at a stretch otherwise.

Now, if I only can stop my ears from ringing.

Great pic, Mel and Stu!

I was one of the crazies visibly cavorting. My cousin was chatted up by some dude next to her, and he was like "So how long have you liked NIN?"
Her reply: Since tonight!

Message from her later: I caught myself smiling at nothing on the train. I want to go crazy some moooooore!

Well done, Trent and co!

08/11/09 12:11 PM

I like Robin's playing more than Aaron North's... And the sound for BYIT wasn't very good. sad smiley

^ Thats nice. I have a couple of friends who arent into nin and have said that they are impressed at everything that night, the music, the sound, the setup, the energy, everything... One even teared during Hurt...

These are the people who should be writing the reviews methinks...

Edit: The rest of the world who has/had multiple opportunities to see nin live can't even begin to fathom how fortunate they are. ARGH!!!

Edit 2: @elle you just need the right audio set up and it'll blow you away =)

It's amazing to read such a detailed review of a concert that I couldn't agree less with. The crowd was so bloody mellow that I thought we had all arrived a day early for Lady Gaga or some crap! It's hard to believe that an out door concert could be deafening and blinding. We all have to grow up at some stage in our life and I for one respect what Trent has become.... the music still rocks

I guess it can't be helped that majority (probably) of the locals don't grow up listening to rock, let alone industrial rock. sad smiley

Oh, wow! Look! Yvonne, Mike, Casey, Casey's Mom, Mel, Stu, Gavin, Skot, Aaron, and a tiny corner of Sophie's head, and part of Rob's head are in the background of someone's pics I found while doing a search on flickr.com for "nin singapore."
They are by a photographer named Michelle Chang. Check out her other pics from the concert, she has some great shots

I feel so bittersweet.

Anyway. How often does Trent take off his shirt on stage?

Yeah, was surprised when he took off his shirt. Haha, first time I saw a half-naked TR.
Nevertheless, it was a spectacular show.

I'm pretty sure he actually threw his shirt into the crowd, as well. . .

i also felt very bittersweet after i came back home last nite.....i termed it as 'post-NIN concert syndrome'

after u feel so high..u can only feel low.

but truly...i am so glad i could attend the concert....the sound engineers also did a great job with fort canning park's acoustics.

the eargasmic moment for me was 'Hand that feeds' and 'The day the world went away'

oh and ....some girl posted on facebook that she got his t shirt.

and Trent has an amazing stage presence...especially with the beefed up look.

hope to see u guys sometime again in this lifetime!

will be on the forums from now onwards.

i did an instrumental of some NIN songs...will post them here soon.

c ya guys

Ahhh....i just got back home...very very satisfying! The whole damn experience was really good. As for the show..i still cant quite come around to summing it up...! Couldn't really gauge what the crowd further down the back was like cause i was on rail..but everyone in my vicinity was goin bonkers and it was great! Yeah, cheers to you too Pukkelpop smiling smiley

Wow, this simple description is so incredibly accurate for me. I got that feeling extreme 5x back at hotel and also Tuesday morning pretty bad. And I dont know why. I actually felt guilty that i felt so low, almost like i was unappreciative/ungrateful and a bad nin fan.

So thank you post this.

08/11/09 7:21 PM

^ yes I know what you mean! I feel like I'm being ungrateful too. I should just be happy I saw them as many people didn't, but on the other hand...that is it. :-(

Thanks for the photo links!

08/11/09 8:10 PM

I just got home a few hours ago. . unfortunately. I am so exhausted.

Mel/Stu, your photo isn't coming up for me. It's possible that it's Safari being a pain in the ass, though.

I was surprised that I didn't start to feel low at all until the flight back. . . I think I spent probably 4 hours of the 7 hour flight trying not to cry. Which is very unlike me. . . It takes alot to make me cry |:
But I left that show feeling so satisfied and on top of the world. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

I hope you guys that are still in Singapore are enjoying it! Make sure you check out Little India.

Fuck, my brain is refusing to work. Why did I go to sleep.

08/11/09 8:10 PM

My thoughts on the show. Such an unbelievable night, guys.
