i am overwhelmed and will never forget this show. i've been seeing NIN since the early days and i have to say that seeing TR and Robin work their way thru some of the more obscure TDS tracks (ones they haven't played much between that era and this) was… well, i don't have words for it. ilan was a monster behind that kit and JMJ, well, what can i say - that man is a class act. oh, and then to put a fucking cherry on it we get Gary Numan? WTF?

though sad that the fonda has been cancelled, i am still on cloud 9.

thank you so much guys.

TR, get better soon - we're all sending you (and your immune system) positive vibes.

video footage forthcoming - i gotta get home & fire up that computer. gonna be a few days tho.

WOW!!!

Last night's Palladium show was unbelievable! TDS front to back + Gary Numan, it just doesn't get any better! Trent's voice started noticeably giving out on him at the end of 1,000,000 and continued through that second set. Honestly, if he would have had to call the show after TDS, I would have left a happy man. The fact that he stayed up there and plowed through...while still sounding great, is a testament to his work ethic...a true professional! Kudos to Robin, JMJ & Ilan...they all stepped up to fill in the void when TR had to take breaks.

Queen Kwong didn't really do it for me, performace wise, or musically. They sounded good, just not my thing.

I'm definitely sold on the Mew record. They sounded awesome! A little mellow to open a NIN show, but amazing nonetheless. I'm looking forward to hearing more from them and seeing them again in a different setting.

I parked at the lot for the Henry Fonda theater last night and saw a line forming already. It's a shame those people will not get their show tonight. I hope they're able to catch on of the others though.

I'm not-so-secretly hoping that the last three get rescheduled and some tickets are opened up so I have another shot.

That was a spectacular show. My favorite was "The Downward Spiral" (the actual song). The chorus blew me away; I didn't expect it to sound so heavy. I've been waiting patiently since my first NIN concert in 2000 to hear Heresy, Ruiner, & I Do Not Want This. They sounded particularly godlike. Head Like a Hole was sad, especially when the crowd raised their arms with Trent.

Best show of my entire life. I couldn't have dreamed of a better birthday celebration.

I am looking for a decent audio rip of the show. . . if anybody has it, please, I beg of you to send me a link. I'm a sound engineer, so I can definitely clean it for you and send it back if you like.

Wow. Fucking amazing show.

Short story for now, since I'm on some computer in a Motel 6...

Started to queue for Palladium at 9pm the night before. About eight people were already in line in front of me, so I camped out somewhere along the wall. The people waiting in line were REALLY awesome (kudos to Ian and friends for the great time). We bonded through the night over squashing crickets (these fuckers were EVERYWHERE) and kicking around a mini soccer ball.

Surprisingly, by 4am - everyone was asleep on the sidewalk and people started stirring again by 6. The Brits (and a Canadian) came by to finish the day off with me to wait in line. I was supposed to go back to the hotel and sleep it off, but I was way too pumped (or perhaps too lazy?) to make it back.

Sorry to those that I scared in line when I prematurely popped champagne and it sprayed everywhere. Woops.

And it was fucking HOT, which was even more unfortunate for the hoard of goths wearing black. People were sweating more than a whore at church even before getting into the venue.

Hannah Montana Uno cards and several hours later, we began to stand for a bit before they handed out tickets at 1:00pm. They let in people one or two at a time (depending on if you had a +1 or not) and people were given wristbands, tickets, and a rather spiffy venue specific button for the show (never thought I'd refer to a "button" as "spiffy," but I guess I just did).

They moved the wristbanded line to be in front of the venue entrance and we waited another several hours (sweating... etc.). I wore a shirt that said "I'd rather be at Coldplay" and a lot of people in line actually came up to me and addressed me about it, laughing. I was completely surprised.

Before we got into the shitshow that was re-lining up for the venue - someone fucking spit on JT. Whoever that cunt was: they should go die in a fucking fire. That guy also had to deal with the worst fucking crowd I have ever seen in my life. He doesn't deserve that and was extremely nice giving water to the front rail (although he did spill half the bottle on me... ha).

Ticketmaster or whoever was in charge of security: you're also a bunch of cunts. Reseperating the line into four lines, some with incompetent people who do things too slow, COMPLETELY screwed over people who waited the night for a spot. Luckily I sprinted in, despite the many people threatening to throw us out, and hit front middle rail. The guys that I stayed the night with (who were also in front of me) were stuck several fucking rows behind. Fuck you very much, four row system.

Queen Kwong was shit. And she seemed beyond vapid, responding to the stupid comments that the audience

::sigh:: This was such an amazing show! One I will never forget! Thank you NIN!!! The set list had everything I wanted to hear, I still can't believe they played all of TDS..& having Gary Numan there was such a special treat!!! smiling smiley))))

09/03/09 12:06 PM

Ticketmaster sells tickets. ONLY. Until they merge with Live Nation, they are not responsible for security. In the Palladium's case, it's Live Nation. Live Nation has actually been cutting WAY back on staff for many shows but there were a lot of uniforms at the Palladium. Hopefully whoever spit on JT got a beatdown for it.

I recorded the show from the far right rail facing the side PA, AT944 -> Battery Box -> DAT and also the R-09HR with internal mics but I am going out again tonight so it could be awhile before I get to it.

09/03/09 12:13 PM

(I'm reposting my review which I posted on a non-NIN message board which is why it might sound a bit generic)

Great, great show, easily the best NIN show I've seen in my 19 years of seeing this band and this was with Trent Reznor being sick.

Nine Inch Nails is supposedly "retiring" after these final group of shows which are being played in small theater sized venues and clubs. The tour is winding down here in Los Angeles this week with four shows at the Hollywood palladium, The Fonda, The Wiltern and the last show at the tiny Echoplex bar on Sunday. Tickets which were sold only on the NIN website sold out instantly a month ago and have proven to be a very tough ticket to get. I missed out on the sale and having seen the band early this Summer with Jane's Addiction, I was planning on passing up these last shows due to the hassle. But after reading about the wildly changing from night to night setlists for the NY and Chicago shows, I decided to give it a shot. Yesterday literally hours before the show, I got an e-mail from someone on the NIN ETS forum that they had an extra ticket for face value ($65) and after meeting the seller, was in for the Palladium show.

Long story short, NIN opened with Mr Self Destruct and played the entire Downward Spiral album from start to finish in order which included one or two songs which had only been performed once before at the NY show where they also performed the entire album who's performance at the time looked to be a one-off deal. After performing that entire album, they played the following songs:

1,000,000
Terrible Lie
Lights in the Sky
Burn
Gave Up
Suck
Metal (with Gary Numan)
Cars (with Gary Numan)
The Hand That Feeds
Head Like a Hole

Before performing "Burn," Trent mentioned he was fighting a bad cold and couldn't hear for shit and apologized for his voice (which really sounded fairly good until he mentioned being sick). Going through "Burn," it became apparent he was starting to have a rough time. After "Suck," Reznor briefly touched upon his early influences which led to Gary Numan joining the band for his songs, "Metal" and "Cars" which I thought was fucking excellent but many in the crowd seemed clueless and uninterested for the two songs.

It's been about 8 or so years since I last saw a show at the Palladium (1st show was The Clash way back in '82) so seeing a show once again at the "renovated" Palladium was very nostalgic. Everything seemed to run very smoothly like clockwork as far as sticking to the advertised schedule. The massive line that snaked all the way around the block the Palladium is on prior to the doors opening at 6:30 moved quickly and most people got in right around 7:45 leaving virtually no wait time for people coming in later. The sound was excellent pretty much anywhere you stood although the sweet spot was dead center about 2/3rds back from the stage. I could have done without either opening band. Queen Kwong featuring an annoying singer and Mew was like a third rate Secret Machines (who I really like). Clearly, rock music is in dire straights these days as far as new talent is concerned.

Which leads to the only real downside which was overall the audience seemed a bit subdued to the point of being perhaps a bit too polite (except for talking during quiet parts) which has it's pros and cons for a NIN show. And during "Lights in the Sky," the acoustics of the Palladium made the annoying chatting from those in the VIP balcony during this quiet and intense song very distracting. Still, I talked with a lot of cool people before the show, many of whom had traveled across the country (and even from Europe and Japan) to catch these last shows.

I cannot emphasize enough how amazing and dedicated a performer/musician Reznor is these days. He seriously mixes up the set on a nightly basis *and* his band plays those songs very tight and well-rehearsed. It was almost shocking to hear that tonight's show at The Fonda was cancelled only an hour after last night's show finished because Reznor was so sick.

T.B.

Not much to say beyond what everyone else has written. Just an absolutely mindfucking show. When I heard the opening few seconds of Mr. Self Destruct to lead off I couldn't help but think about TDS being played in its entirety, though I can still hardly believe I was there to see it happen. Fucking amazing.

On a personal note, this was the first NIN show I went to without my (now) fiancee. Although I enjoy going with her, she would never be able to stand the crush of a pit, so I've always had to get seats or stand to the back in the past. Not last night! Despite not getting to the venue until about 4:00, I was able to get about 6 rows back (on the right) by the time NIN came on. I have to say, the experience of being pulled this way and that while getting trudged on by people who have lost complete control of their bodies while listening to Trent is like a religious experience. So much better than sitting in seats at the NIN|JA and With Teeth tours.

Can't wait for Saturday...

09/03/09 12:48 PM

Awesome show!! I met some really cool people and hope to see them again in the future.

09/03/09 1:13 PM

I got to see Halo 8 performed in its entirety, live.

Twice.

(And both times with people I met on alt.music.nin, when Halo 8 was the latest release.)

The only reason I had any concerns about the show ending "without an encore" (everything after TDS was an encore, truly) is because I knew the show was scheduled to go to midnight. But, the last time I heard Trent's voice during his speech sound so shredded, he'd also had to cancel the next night's show.

The rail was pretty intense, even to the right of Robin. I'm glad I was able to hold out, since it turned out the pit floor got "closed" early on. Someone wedged between m0 and I at one point, which wasn't a huge problem except that she and the old dude behind her (who is probably my age, sigh) were chatting it up during "The Downward Spiral" (the song) and blocking my view by holding her camera & arm up really high. Most of the rail "regulars" seem to make an effort to not block views with their cameras, or arms.

However, even with the pressure and heat, I was not as hot & sweaty & gross as I felt even not being pressed up against *anyone* at Webster.

The bass levels during Mew were vibrating my throat & neck in a way that made me feel like I might puke. So... their music might have been good, but I don't remember much more than how sick it made me feel. I was glad to see that NIN's mixing seemed to have fixed this, or... maybe I'm already so connected with the music that such things wouldn't distract me.

Also, Gary Numan has definitely aged well. He is SO not the guy I remember from the "Cars" video. What a treat!

Thanks again for such an awesome show!

09/03/09 2:32 PM

I don't think we can thank Trent enough for being such a trooper and performing @ SUCH A HIGH LEVEL! UNREAL! when it was obvious he was sick as fuck.

(EDIT) Upon further reflection I feel the need to make a comparison. Anyone remember the game in the NBA finals when MJ was so sick he could barely stand up yet somehow played nearly the entire game scoring 38 points and leadin them to a 4th quarter victory? That was Trent @ the Palladium.

[sports.espn.go.com]

Trent, if you read these posts, just know that it was still a powerful performance. The downward spiral live was amazing!

On the other hand I don't think I can ever forgive him for having these opening bands. Queen Kwong were TERRIBLE. She was flat on every note. Mew were just well..... not that interesting. Past NIN openers (like Boris, QOTSA, APC, etc) have been amazing. The only thing amazing me about these bands is that people like them.

All in all, I hope its not the end. Look at bands like Neurosis who stopped 'touring' 10 years ago. They still play about 5-10 shows a year and then live normal lives the rest of the time. I'm sure TR will perform again. I mean just a week ago he said he wouldn't ever play TDS again so.....there's still hope!

Great show even though the big guy was sick. You really couldn't tell other than his voice cutting out a few times. The rest of the band rocked it as usual. The crowd was great, though I second the question, why do people feel the need to carry on a loud coversation during quiet songs? (I'm looking at you people talking it up during LITS)

I got most of the show in HD video. Unfortunately my camera started overheating and locking up so I missed a few key moment (like Big Man with a Gun) which was very frustrating. Here is what I have uploaded so far on YouTube:

Cars w/ Gary Numan
Metal w/ Gary Numan
The Hand That Feeds
Ruiner
Added: Burn (with Trent talking about being sick)

Great show from my vantage point: Justin's side at the edge of the "slam pit." Most interesting moment for me was seeing some guy make the sign of the cross then give a kiss up to the lord and the next line Trent sung was "There is no god up in the sky tonight." They sounded great despite Trent's maladies--I didn't notice at all even after Trent apologized for sounding like shit.

I thinks it's awesome to see a band like NIN that has reached it's status play at small venues again. I hope I can get tix for The Wiltern.
