well, i do have one comment. to the person that believes NIN will walk away with like 200k per last show, WOW are you wrong. you haven't taken into account a few things:
- the venue cost; you pay a (sometimes high) price for rental or the venue takes a large % of ticket sales.
- venue security, which can be a separate cost from the venue rental if, like at a NIN show, extra security is expected to be needed.
- venues rarely share alcohol sales.
- venues often take a % of merch sales which is why it can be cheaper to buy them on the band's website after the event.
- someone else mentioned food & lodging for crew.
- you instantly lose 10% of tickets sales to VIPs, family and friends.
there are other costs which i just can't think of in my sickly haze.

okay, i hope that made sense and there weren't too many typos or grammatical errors. again, i hate being sick.

Your analysis is pretty close to dead on. Of course it really depends on the nature of the contract. Was LiveNation the promoter or was there a partnership between Nine Inch Nails and LiveNation? In a situation where LiveNation is the promoter and they own the venue it works out pretty well. Nine Inch Nails tells LiveNation how much it costs to get them to play that venue. LiveNation pays staffing, venue, and promotions costs and determines ticket prices based on that. In this situation Nine Inch Nails probably coughs up about 20% (and in some extreme situations 30%) of merchandise sales to the venue to be allowed to sell merchandise. In this scenario Nine Inch Nails is an employee of LiveNation. LiveNation collects all money paid for tickets and pays Nine Inch Nails what they are contracted which covers expenses of their employees and living expenses. I highly doubt that was the nature of the contract, however. The major thing that suggests this is that Nine Inch Nails is paid the same flat fee every night in that scenario, and that would cause a variance in ticket prices for different sized venues and the amount of tickets that can be sold (unless LiveNation figured all 10 shows and set an average ticket price, or decided to profit more on some shows than others). They most likely would have lost money on shows like Webster Hall and Echoplex without shows at the Aragon Ballroom and Paladium to pick up the slack. Anyone in Chicago knows thats true, otherwise Nine Inch Nails could have played a show at the Riviera (which sounds fantastic, but is only half the capacity). More likely is that LiveNation and Nine Inch Nails did a partnership deal. LiveNation has the venue and the security and sells alcohol to cover staffing, and gets a larger percentage of merchandise in lieu of venue fees. Nine Inch Nails would then get a greater percentage of ticket sales, but would most likely have to cover some of their own promotion. This would result in Nine Inch Nails take being different from night to night, but I really doubt that they lost money on the shows. I guess it is possible given the high calibre of staff they employ and the fact that they took an arena sized show on tour to clubs. Club sized ticket sales might not pay arena sized bills, but in a partnership deal LiveNation shares in any profits or losses, and I doubt they would allow a situation where they lose money. My guess is that Trent wouldn't care and he would've sold the tickets for even less if he could've.

Don't forget insurance costs on property and personnel, and any lost fees/extended fees after the cancellations/rescheduling for all the above.

yes her name is carly and i'm the boyfriend. it was a great show. i don't know why more people weren't rocking the way me and my buddies were. we were throwing each around having a great time! i noticed a lot of the crowd was very lame. i mean it's Nine Inch Nails, it's supposed to be a little rough, right? again, awesome show.

I don't know, but he first came to us like he knew us. When he began to propose his offer, it sounded vague and my girlfriend & I looked at each other wondering where was going. He offered up to $60 for either of our wristbands, which we respectfully declined TWICE since we didn't want to risk getting ejected from the pit or not being allowed access back into it if we were to leave and come back. We felt like we were being targeted, like we were the only ones he could persuade, and he made lengthy proposals at that. I don't if he ever was able to get his girlfriend in the pit because it didn't seem to matter anymore since I ran into him again slamming around during Mr. Self Destruct and Wish.

Nice to have sort of met you. That was me standing next to you in the black t-shirt and black trousers with my hair pinned up to the back of my head. I heard his increasing $ amount up to his $60 indecent proposal, and I looked at you guys and said don't do it. He gave you the line about how you guys were going to be able to stay in the pit as long as you didn't ever leave the pit. I wonder if he knew that security had walked around the pit at least once to sweep anyone without a grey wristband out of there.

Here's the best part: ALL they have to do is release an album online at $5 per or something and they make all their money back. Now that all that shit goes to Trent and all them, he can make millions on one record. I can't even imagine how much he made on Ghosts.

How much did that make, anyway?

No matter what, though, cost is no problem here, most likely. But I'm sure all this may have been VERY expensive. Considering these are smaller shows, and only 9 of them, there isn't a long-term time to make major profit (unlike their other tours which were global and ended up probably making profit). So, yeah...

Definitely release another album, Trent? grinning smiley You'll make money! tongue sticking out smiley

My Pollstar concert venue directory doesn't have the Wiltern listed, but the Warfield a similiar sized Live Nation owned venue takes 35% of merch sales.

Hey Everyone....

Need to ask the NIN community a favor. Along with a few others I'm looking very seriously into syncing higher fidelity audio to my videos and then seeding them out as torrents. That being the case, I need to find some good audio to sync with. If you have recorded any high quality audio yourself, OR if you have come across somebody else's high quality audio please for any of the 4 shows in LA please let me know via PM.

When everything has been assembled, I'll seed the videos out for everyone to Download. And if DVD's become an option, we'll get a list together.

Thank you in advance everybody.

Did they oversell the venue?? There were SO many ppl that were supposed to be in the balcony & didn't get a spot, upon trying to stand in various places got yelled at repeatedly by mean security women. I was being super nice, asking her where it would be ok for me to go, she just got madder. When I said m'amn I'm trying to work with u. She screamed I'm trying to work with u!!! I was so calm & polite & all I got all night was treated crappy with contradictory info from the security! It really left a bad taste in my mouth. The same thing happened to my friend. I'll never go back to the wiltern. I heard some ppl saying if they knew they were going to get stuck standing squished up in the corner of the balconey behind the whole crowd also standing up, to the point they couldn't even see, they wouldn't have bought tickets. They couldve listened to the show the next day or at least seen it on YouTube. I kind of saw where they were coming from, the guys put on a great show but for some of us that spent half the night getting yelled at for no reason by security,& not able to find a seat(I got to the venue early too!), but then yelled at that we had to find a seat????? It's like whhhhaaatt??!!

I've been a fan since the late 90's,& let's hope if Trent or the guys ever choose to do a show again, it's NOT at the wiltern.

In October I am going to see Hope Sandoval (formerly of Mazzy Star whose band features Colm O'Ciosoig of My Bloody Valentine fame), and Metallica. Sunday, and I still can't believe I got to watch it go down. Let's see...
1. That picture of Trent on a unicorn with a rainbow, butterfly and bird in the background? Priceless.

2. I wanted to hear Gary perform again sooo much. After watching him perform at the Palladium, I was left ravenous for more. I was very happy when he took to the stage and made my way to Amoeba yesterday to buy an album. Love it.

3. During a quick break, I thought to myself, "Damn, I sure would like to hear Me, I'm Not." Lo and behold, that's exactly what they broke into! I literally swooned, a great, big dopey grin broke across my face as I uttered, "Yeaahhh," and my head rolled back. *sigh* It was great.

4. Piggy remix? Too. Fucking. Cool. It killed me. Slayed me.

5. I'm officially in love with Robin Finck. Man, that guy can play! I loved watching him dance, he was so into it!

6. His name escapes me, but the drummer? Spot on. He was awesome. I felt damn near hypnotized watching him play Eraser.

7. *screaming joyfully at the top of my lungs* I GOT A NIN GUITAR PICK!!!

8. I loooved watching Trent play the tamborine.

9. There was a guy standing in front of me to my right who was well over six feet tall. Grey shirt I think, green ear plugs. I was terrified he would be blocking my view during the show. He let my short ass stand in front of him. A million thanks!

10. The mood was weird. I, too, felt the crowd wasn't as into it as the previous shows. However, I think it was just the solemnity of the situation. I think despite our mutual feelings of gratitude and giddiness, we were all pretty sad that it was the last show.

11. The first time I heard In This Twilight, I weeped. I was at the absolute lowest point of my life and hearing that song made me lay on the floor and cry. To have Nine Inch Nails, the tour, everything, end on that song almost made me have to sit down. I'm so glad he did it.

12. Oh, for crying out loud! Was David Bowie there or not?! smiling smiley

13. I managed to get some merch (no red t) but was quite disappointed to find out there was nothing but shirts and posters. No stickers? No buttons? Last time I checked, this stuff wasn't available on the nin.com merch tab either. Any advice as to where I can score this stuff?

14. When I left, there were more people giving out schwag than you could shake a stick at. I love schwag. A gem I have is a promo CD for The Horrors. I love it! Did anyone else get one that they don't want? I would love to have an extra.

15. I was really hoping to hear (aside from Me, I'm Not and Gary N.) The Becoming, Dead Souls and The Wretched. I got it all. Thank you, Trent & Co.! I was also hoping to hear Perfect Drug and remember someone posting before on another Discussion Line that they will Never perform that song and they will Never perform PHM in its entirety because of Kinda I Want To. Why is this? I asked before but the message board was taken down before I had a chance to check the response. Does anyone know the deal? The curiosity is killing me.

16. I heard some, "You're going to see them Again?!," too. I was like, "You're not?" I pity the poor fool who don't like the NIN! YES! I AM A NINNY AND I'M PROUD OF IT!

17. So That's what Atmosphere sounds like! Wonderful! Absolutely wonderful!

18. Did anyone else feel bits of the ceiling fall on their head? Or was that just me? OR, was it the people in the balcony dropping stuff? Hmmm...

19. For future (any) show reference: how the hell does one get one of these backstage pass thingies? I mean, is it something that you can only get if you're press or someone famous? How does a fan get one? You know someone who knows someone? I always wondered.

20. I was so relieved when Trent said the music would still be made. However, I was a bit confused - does he mean he, Trent Reznor, is going to continue making music, or NIN? I guess what I mean is, when I go to buy a CD in the future, will I go to the letter N or the letter R? Can someone please clarify?

Thank you for everything, everyone! I'm so grateful I could experience all this! I won't ever forget it! Nope!

I did not say they made $200,000 per show. Obviously there are expenses, but I'd be stunned if it ate up more than 25-35% of that. All I was saying is they did not need to play Toronto to pay for this tour. I'd be surprised if any of the venues was not profitable, though Echo and Bowery may have been close.
