The Slip's Genre?

I just noticed today that all of the songs off of "The Slip" are labeled under the genre "(253)" in the sound file properties.
Even Echoplex on the "Lights in the Sky" tour sampler has this genre.

Anyone know what that could mean?
It's kind of odd, especially with all the stuff Trent's been doing since he's been independent.

He maybah is doing what he kinda did with "Ghosts". He is letting the listener decide for themselves.

i dont know what that means, however, i generally classify most of NIN with classical music. yeah it has a what i suppose some people might consider "pop" lyrics, but to me trents lyrics have as much soul as edgar allen poe, or WB Yeats, the the dramatic highs and lows and harmony are as good as or superior to many other classical preformers.

ghosts is in the same genre as brian eno's ambiant work , ( ghosts is better though), and ambiant is acctually an abstracted form of modern classical music, so thats exactly where i put NIN. everything from TDS and beyond has this element. i just think its an ew way of looking at musical composition. i most definatly do not catagorize them as a rock band, as when i think of rock bands i think of crap like motely crue or whatever who dont have any where near the soul of TR. it just doesnt sound the same as other rock bands.

the slip just reminds me of the rest of his work. it's probably not in any way near his best album, but i really like how raw it is and how quickly he released it. 999,999 reminds me of broken, 1,000,000 reminds me of survivalism and the white stripes, letting you reminds me of march of the pigs and you know what you are?, discipline reminds me of the hand that feeds, only, and his cover of dead souls, echoplex reminds me of cabaret voltaire (the beat; see "jazz the glass"winking smiley, the cure (the outro guitar), and gives the sense of paranoia i got from me, i'm not, head down reminds me of the song with teeth. lights in the sky is beautiful, and actually reminds me of something tom waits would do. corona radiata is probably the most original track on the album in terms of what he hasn't done before. i absolutely love it, and the rebirth theme i associate with it. the four of us are dying reminds me of ghosts and the fragile, and that hip-hop beat is just great. demon seed reminds me of things falling apart, and i guess it's pretty cool, but it didn't grow on me as much as the others did. anyway, yeah. ambient, post-punk, whatever genres you want to assign to this album, my opinion is that trent's music gives me the feeling the stooges give me, the feeling mc5 gives me, the feeling t. rex gives me. this is old school rock and roll shit with enough noise to inspire anyone to kick their own ass on the dance floor.

The genre is "Nine Inch Nails" as nothing they do ever fits into pre-established genre rules.

progressive industrial??
i dont know Nine Inch Nails ventures into so many different genres and makes them all his bitch

10/08/08 4:16 PM

tr00 dat

the slip is unclassifiable.

I swear to jebus NIN is listed in so many genre's in my iTunes...drives me nuts.

10/08/08 6:55 PM

"thought provoking"

"moving"

"intelligent"

"life soundtrack"

"revolutionary"

any of these would work

Someone I know listens to punk, which I don't and know nothing about, and he's not into nails but says The Slip sounds more punk rock than most punk stuff coming out right now.

10/10/08 5:12 PM

There is no one genre

It is a gallery of Trent's previous work

Well, basically in a nutshell

10/10/08 7:01 PM

It's music I guess. A lot of the established terms for instrumental/industrial music don't fit Ghosts either. Completely agree with Blue Recluse's adjective too.

10/14/08 5:26 PM

Progressive Electronica, if it was classified.

But as a work of art, it has no genre. It's just orgasmic noise for me.

Nine Inch Nails is industrial Metal, which is the combination of punk rock, metal, and industrial(noise sounds). Nine Inch Nails also has a classical edge to it.

10/17/08 9:51 PM

In my downloaded version of "The Slip" the genre is 253, but my purchased cd has genre listed as Metal.

10/18/08 12:25 AM

who cares ??
its awsomeness...

10/18/08 5:19 AM

i dunno some synthetic guitar treatments and digital ambiance come close to fripp/eno as a reference point.

as some said, it's up to the listener. comes close to straight up experimental rock in my ears.

10/18/08 5:22 AM

That's strange. I've downloaded music before and it's had the genre labeled as (16), or (18), something like that. It was an album by Ash and they're like, an alternative / punk band.

On iTunes, I scrolled down the genre listings (to select one) and the 16th was Alternative, and the 18th was Alternative Rock - or something like that anyway, I can't remember from it being a while ago now.

It might have been a coincidence, but I wonder if there's a 253rd genre on the list? I had a few drinks last night and I'm a bit too out of it to count tongue sticking out smiley

I really like that classification, I haven't ever heard of it or even thought of it. I have my NIN music under "Industrial Metal" but I myself see problems with that. Digital Rock might be my answer.

I wouldn't say so, NIN isn't very progressive at all, especially with the drum beats.

10/19/08 6:07 PM

Most of the tracks (at least the first 6) I just call generic-rock. The term isn't meant to be insulting, it's just what I call abrasive rock that mostly consists of guitars, bass, drums, a singer and minimal keyboard usage that uses a lot of power chords, but isn't metal or grunge.

It's the same category of rock as stuff like early Blur, Foo Fighters, Weezer and Garbage's last album, Bleed Like Me. That's not to say I think the rock tracks off The Slip sound anything like Weezer, it's just there's nothing that really sticks out about in terms of harmony or timbre that really makes it fit into a more specific genre like metal, grunge, punk, industrial rock, nu metal or funk metal.

The later stuff on the album could be called a variety of things though...

10/19/08 7:59 PM

I Think I'll call it... Ghost Rock!

10/19/08 8:54 PM

god, i hate genres.

NIN, especially doesn't fit under one. enjoy.

and i'm sick of people "creating" all these sub-genres these days. psycho-mute-math-electro-genetics-synthesis. GTFO, the lot of you. (not you, the genre CREATORS)

10/19/08 9:34 PM

shit that means me... i made that one up myself...

*No need to classify it beyond that.
