I've given up buying 'new' vinyl; in most cases all you are buying is the CD mastered version but a generation older...

Queens of the Stone Age (EraV) for example; shocking quality on vinyl vis-a-vis the CD.

Now vinyl re-issues of all time classics are a different story... These sound way better than the CD version and are worth paying through the nose for.

Whilst we have lost no money, I think this is pretty shoddy of HMV, expecially as I ordered it near enough after it was available to pre-order. If there were no copies left, then why were we still able to order them? But this is the first time I've heard anything about it being discontinued - I smell retailer bullshit here.

most nin vinyl's are available in virgin records in NYC...I had most of them in my hands, decided not to buy because it was redundant. I have a few already. My buddy has the fragile signed by the whole band.

I prefer to buy my vinyls from local record shops in NYC, there's great shops around Bleeker St. I don't see why i'd go to virgin. anyway I didn't have trouble finding the Slip either, I got it the week it came out.

I don't really care that it's not limited. I opened my copy right away, I collect vinyls to listen to them rather than the value or potential to resell them.

Still unopened. No way to listen to it even if i wanted to..

I couldn't disagree more. Vinyl sounds far more full and warm than CD.

I bought The slip on CD rather than vinyl because a) it's a numbered limited edition, b) it comes with a DVD, c) it has stickers, d) and a booklet, and e) (and this is the main reason) the vinyl version sells for a hell of a lot more over here. The price of vinyl is creeping up everywhere in the UK. A few days ago I asked the staff at Zavvi (née Virgin Megabore) whether they'd be bringing back their 7" section. They told me that from next month vinyl singles, whether 7" or 12", will be removed from all HMV and Zavvi stores nationwide.

Having released a 12" myself last year, I know how hard it is to sell vinyl now. Record stores are closing here every week. Those that are still selling vinyl are mainly dance music-only – lots of the stores we tried to stock with said they loved our stuff, but couldn't possibly stock anything with (shock, horror) vocals on it.

Vinyl always sounds better than CD. MP3 is barely worth bothering with, it's so awful and compressed. The loss of physical records and their artwork is one of the most depressing things around at the moment. Many people seem to be thinking "Oh, good old vinyl will always be around." It won't, because you don't support the format by buying it. Vinyl then sells in smaller and smaller quantities, with the result that pressing plants have to charge more for manufacture. Vinyl will soon be gone completely, and all because people are more interested in buying more "convenient" (but shit and artworkless) download files. The whole situation sucks.

At my local Indigo book (and music) store, you can order any vinyl you want at the kiosk and have it in the store by the end of the week. I may go down in the next couple of days to get a copy of the Year Zero vinyl.

10/13/08 5:02 AM

I'm broke. I only have the free download & I'm not sure if I'll be getting the CD (tempting though) but goddamn I want the vinyl. I want to start a vinyl collection(only ones I have are my dads old records) & I think The Slip would be a great start.

so, might as well open em and enjoy =)

i say the same thing to those people who save up ALL their money and never buy ANYTHING. You have all this money, grats. Now what? Invest?

You either invest in bonds just to counter inflation(assuming hyper-inflation doesnt occur).

Or

You invest(err, through it away) in the stock market. Thats like gambling basically.

So, are u going to unwrap, the cd's, that please you
or will you keep them, in, their sleeves?

=)

im really bored i know.

What the hell is a quid?...Yes I love my vinyl more than Mother England herself. Vinyl is FATTER, has nice little scratchies, big, pretty, pictures, and on the right turntable-($$$), sound quality that rivals a CD. My With Teeth has a few hiccups -I think it was a crappy cut, but my NIN singles are oky doke.

Cheerio!

Vinyl versions of albums typically are a different master than their digital counterparts.

Fuck Sunrise.

I got The Slip on vinyl from HV in DT Toronto as soon as it came out (and there are still a bunch of them in the store (At least in the HMV megastore on Yonge St) for $29.99+tx ($33.89). 2 weeks ago I got The Downward Spiral vinyl from HMV for like $38, and I went to Sunrise (right across the street from HMV) and TDS was $50something and The Slip was $40. Screw those greedy motherfuckers.

ah, ok. just a big-ass 12" by 12" booklet? i just checked my ninternet version of The Slip and it doesn't have any song artwork with it, just the cover art.

i am resisting opening vinyl, but i think after a couple more than a few drinks i will have at it. i really want to frame those pics, maybe have them scanned and print my faves.

thank you for the offer and enjoy your vinyl too!

i read somewhere that the vinyl version is out of print already, is this true?

I haven't listened to mine, I haven't opened it yet and I've had it since august. Don't know if I want to listen to it though, I want to collect! Also, I'll look for it used somewhere and listen to that (Like when I found the PHM vinyl used, I listened to it, but not my un opened one)

I feel like an old fart here (i'm only 38), but I gotta say it anyway. Vinyl is THE SHIT! Vinyl does have different audio qualities to it than digital. It has less to do with the master that they record it from and more to do with the physical media of vinyl. With digital, it's perfect, there is no divergence between the way it sounds the first time or the hundredth time you play it. But with vinyl it depends on your turntable, needle, stereo, amp, speakers/headphones and room! It is such an organic experience!

I highly recommend to anyone that has vinyl to open it up and listen to it, at least once! There is nothing like it and there never will be anything like it!

I have a collection of over 400 vinyl albums and I would never part with them. I have been most sad at the conversion to CD and now to MP3 for the loss of album art. I totally get the whole no storage, no muss, no fuss thing. I do. And I love that part too. But there is something to be said about the whole package that used to be put out as a regular part of record making. It was the music, the images, the lyrics, the acknowledgments, the liner notes...it was everything. You perused the jacket and the inserts while you listened to the album. It was a whole experience. I miss it.

I have The Downward Spiral on vinyl and I am going to be collecting everything I can get my hands on.

If you don't know where to get it, find a local indie music shop. Not Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy or the like. Find your area's version of Joe's Music. In the Northeast there is a small chain called Newbury comics that always has a vinyl section of dance singles and albums. If you have to drive a little to the nearest city, do it. Patronize local business, it's part of what is very cool about the whole vinyl thing theses days actually. Big chains no longer carry it, so you get to help out a small business, rather than send your money to a big corp.

Anyway, that's my $.02. Hope it's received well by all. :-)

Rock on! \m/

Vinyl doesn't seem to be going away at all. What I'm noticing is that more and more artists put their albums on vinyl as well as CD (and download). Now granted, the 90% consumers will just download the MP3s (most of them illegaly), but there is a faithful group of buyers who will buy the original CDs, and an insanely loyal audiophile group which is not diminishing but growing, who are buying vinyl.

I'm proud to be one of the latter, with a collection of NIN vinyls (over 100) and a good number of vinyls from other artists, but I guess it's in my blood (my dad has over 500 vinyls himself).

And now, with the 180g releases, the vinyl portion of the music industry has definitely received a good boost. Vinyl has shifted from the regular listener to the audiophile group, but it's unlikely to go away just like that.

The Slip on vinyl is definitely a different experience than the CD (or the download). Just the feel of handling the large piece of black vinyl, and the (for our standards) huge artwork is awesome.

11/29/08 5:35 AM

Just FYI, stay away from "limited edition red vinyl" (or other colored vinyls) of popular albums that are proffered on eBay. There has been a similar case of the fakes regarding a "reprint" of Pumpkins' Mellon Collie on red vinyl, since the album hasn't been available on vinyl since the end of the 90s and some Eastern European bastards figured (rightly so) that they could make a killing on printing up fakes.

Of course, if you have no qualms about owning fake vinyl prints, then by all means...

I'm not getting into the whole mp3s vs cds vs vinyls. I don't care. I buy vinyl because it looks pretty on the shelf, there's a certain satisfying ritual about putting a record on, and since no one brings vinyl records to parties anymore, they're pretty hard to lose in drunken situations (unlike cds).

For the record (no pun intended), my Slip vinyl plays fine and sounds, for all intents and purposes, exactly like the free mp3s. As does the CD copy my friend has. To me, that is.

I want to get the vinyl SO BADLY. But I live in nowhere so anyplace that does sell vinyl, won't have anything unless it's Nickelback or Fall Out Boy.

Is there any additional artwork? What does the dust cover look like? I want to know!
