I feel like an old fart here (i'm only 38), but I gotta say it anyway. Vinyl is THE SHIT! Vinyl does have different audio qualities to it than digital. It has less to do with the master that they record it from and more to do with the physical media of vinyl. With digital, it's perfect, there is no divergence between the way it sounds the first time or the hundredth time you play it. But with vinyl it depends on your turntable, needle, stereo, amp, speakers/headphones and room! It is such an organic experience!
I highly recommend to anyone that has vinyl to open it up and listen to it, at least once! There is nothing like it and there never will be anything like it!
I have a collection of over 400 vinyl albums and I would never part with them. I have been most sad at the conversion to CD and now to MP3 for the loss of album art. I totally get the whole no storage, no muss, no fuss thing. I do. And I love that part too. But there is something to be said about the whole package that used to be put out as a regular part of record making. It was the music, the images, the lyrics, the acknowledgments, the liner notes...it was everything. You perused the jacket and the inserts while you listened to the album. It was a whole experience. I miss it.
I have The Downward Spiral on vinyl and I am going to be collecting everything I can get my hands on.
If you don't know where to get it, find a local indie music shop. Not Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy or the like. Find your area's version of Joe's Music. In the Northeast there is a small chain called Newbury comics that always has a vinyl section of dance singles and albums. If you have to drive a little to the nearest city, do it. Patronize local business, it's part of what is very cool about the whole vinyl thing theses days actually. Big chains no longer carry it, so you get to help out a small business, rather than send your money to a big corp.
Anyway, that's my $.02. Hope it's received well by all. :-)
