Two utterly random "The Slip" questions that have been on my mind:

1. Has anyone dissected whether the initial, 2-syllable utterance ("Am I..." ) on Discipline was intended or whether TR just mis-fired? I am sure all of the apologists will say, 'Of course he meant it...he's a genius, after all', but every time I hear it I get the unmistakable impression that he just missed his cue. This is not to say that it was subsequently overlooked during the mastering, because that would be plain dumb, but it doesn't strike me as something that a songwriter would deliberately put in there. Maybe it was an oops, but they kept the take going and decided to keep it when they heard it on tape? (Sorry if this is an old topic; I searched and couldn't find any previous discussion.)

2. Is anyone else as disturbed as I am that The Slip hasn't sold out? It was a limited edition of 250K individually numbered copies (collectible as hell), but here we are several months later and The Slip is collecting only dust on store shelves, often several copies per site. Yes - I know it was offered for free as a download, but has the venerable CD fallen so far that even the hardcore loyal NIN fans are unwilling to buy it? I don't do MP3's, but even if I did, I still would have bought a physical copy out of principle - and out of respect for and gratitude to my favorite band.

PLEASE DISCUSS AMONGST YOURSELVES. (I'll lurk in the background.)

1) after watching them all work so meticulously I reccon it was intentional, besides... his 'slip' ;p was repeated in the next line also. perhaps it was not originally intended but (maybe it happened in practise) and they decided to make it intentional.

2) y'know I don't have a 'hard copy' of 'the slip' myself because I assumed it *had* already sold out. *a ghost figure of lexi appears out of the dust left behind as she disappears out the door..... to the cd shop*

You know, I've been curious myself about this, especially since a regular copy was supposed to be distibuted a few weeks after the LE was released, and obviously the regular copy has not been put on the shelves. Now I have bought 2 copies of the slip (one who's number has 6 digits, and another with 4 digits plus different stickers) and I think it should have sold out by now. But then again, MP3's are now popular, so when people downloaded the Slip, they probably thought they didn't need the physical copy.

I got a question I really wanna ask but first I need to say this. Ive studied music for 8 amazing years of my early times (I'm only 20) and nothing makes me feel more alive and closer to a human life with a feeling of pure purity than everything reznor has given us. Now, My Question

Trent, did you happen to title this album "The Slip" because you felt it was maybe the lesser one of all your work? Its a really really good album first off but when I compare it to everything els of yours I seem to feel this one is the Slip. You being a man that seems true to yourself. I could just be mixing my personal opinion in with the question to much but it seems a bit odd you had titled this album " The Slip

Thanks for putting up with my shit guys.

In the album credits for The Slip, it says that the album was performed by Josh, Robin and Alessandro along with Trent. So does that mean that Trent didn't play all of the instruments on the album, even though he wrote the parts? If so, why did he do that? I know that Trent likes live drumming, so I see why Josh was there, but I don't see why Robin and Alessandro were brought in. Either way, awesome album and all of those guys rock, but I'm just curious.

to make that "live sound"

and because Robin is the best nin gutairst and Alessandro was the best keyboardist(w/ the exception of TR)

The drumming explains the "live sound", but Trent could have easily done everything else on the album himself. It's not like the songs were recorded with all of the instruments played at once, as multitracks exist for the album, dissecting the songs into separate parts.

the slip sold 250,000 copies. They sell the albums to cd stores (best buy, amazon, B&N)... Nine inch nails still sold 250,000 copies even if it never leaves the shelf of your fav cd retailer. But I think you want to know how many people bought it from those stores. Who knows.

And to someone earlier, the slip doesn't sound balanced at all, there are way too many mids. I don't really dig the overall sound of it.

Hi - Sorry to ask this kinda awkward question, but does anyone happen to know what the real story is behind the song 'Lights in the Sky'? I mean, why did Trent actually write it? I ask because someone I love is dying and the lyrics/everything about the song seems to speak to this type of situation... sitting by someone's side, afraid to go to sleep in the hopsital chair in case they pass while you doze... "watching you drown... I follow you down... and I am staying right beside you" (sorry if I'm slightly off with the lyrics).

Can anyone else see where I might get this interpretation, besides that of merely being a fan applying a song to her own situation?

If you want, you can send a direct message to me... its cool. - Amber

2 questions. Wasn't a regular release of the album supposed to be released last August? And has there been any misprints with the numbering, like, 2 of the same numbers? (ex. 2 copies with the number 2345)<--Just chose a completely random number there.

the only non-limited release is the vinyl, and i've not seen anyone mention two exact numbers before, but some don't have numbers at all.

Well, with the non-limited, I read somewhere (ninwiki I think) back before the album came out that the limited edition was to be released in July 2008, and the non-limited edition (with no DVD) was to be released a few weeks later. But obviously, that hasn't happened. I also know about un-numbered releases, just curious about double numbered releases.

who would have thought there would be this many slip inquisitions?

Hi, does anyone know if there will be a re-mix release of this album?

07/03/09 8:02 AM

Hope I am in the right forum . . . .

Many months ago there was a free video download of 1,000,000 (live at Red Rocks). It was a pro shooting.

I would like to download it again, as I had to replace my hard drive and Time Machine did not include video in its back-ups. My error in setting up my preferences. Live and learn.

Is it still available? Thanks in advance.

Why does everyone discount that The Slip isn't YZ2? Has trent specifically said this?

That's what I'd like to know. I know we've already got remix.nin.com, but maybe a selection of Trent's favourites would be nice.

I know you were joking, but in all seriousness The Slip started out as an EP.

Well the song makes me think Trent is asking if he still has it in him to do what he does given that he's gotten older and a lot of things have changed, with my interpretation I would assume it was intentional and was done to show his uncertainty in doing music by "missing his cue" that make sense?

He actually said in an interview that it was a mistake that he made. He got used to it and ended up liking it, so it stayed on! smiling smiley
