Guitar tabs anyone?

09/13/08 4:05 PM

Anyone else currently trying to figure out how to play some of the songs on guitar from "The Slip" album?

Last night I made a pretty accurate personal interpretation of "Discipline" and "Echoplex"

It'd be nice to see if anyone else out there has any accurate guitar tabs or sheet music ready to be read and play by other guitar players.

I started trying to figure out Echoplex myself, based on the DVD winking smiley I'm pretty crap at tabbing stuff out tho. But the Slip is pretty guitar friendly, so I was hoping to be semi-sucessful. I haven't seen any real threads about it thus far tho. Did I miss one?

I'd love to get Head Down

I already got Discipline down but am unsure of the exact tuning.

I play it in standard & it sounds alright.

09/13/08 6:23 PM

i'm working on figuring them all out.
I've got nearly all of "1,000,000", the main riff of "Echoplex", "Discipline", and just about all of "Letting You"

you should try playing everything in drop-D tuning, down one half step, so from Low to High:
- Db (or C#...whichever way your tuner looks at it)
- Ab
- Db (or C#)
- Gb
- Bb
- Eb

the only song that would be different would be "Head Down" cause it's played on a baritone.

none of the songs on "The Slip" are terribly hard to figure out. most of what I have for "1,000,000", "Discipline", and "Echoplex" is all based on what I hear

09/14/08 3:15 PM

I've played "Discipline" and "Echoplex" in standard tuning.

Thanks alot bro for letting me know about the whole "baritone" guitar deal..

I always wondered how Robin Finck was able to reach that really low bassy guitar sound in "Head Down"

09/14/08 2:58 PM

you can definately play "Discipline" and "Echoplex" in standard. i have found though that the tuning i've used makes playing the song easier...especially if you play the songs sequentially.

yeah the baritone thing...i wondered about that too and the dvd in the slip confirmed my suspicion.
he's using a Jerry Jones, Danelectro style baritone. not sure what model specifically though.

09/14/08 4:12 PM

I can play the main rhythm for "Echoplex" but I can't play that lil solo Robin Finck throws at almost half through the song...

its like right at the "2:20" mark...

In the album version it sounds like he's doing a single note solo...

but then on the DVD he riffs that part? What the hell? Confused...lol

but then again you can do that...so maybe I'm just over reacting.

Still I'm trying to figure out that solo...

and I consider myself pretty good at trying to figure out lead parts..

since I'm obsessed more with lead than rhythm guitar.

I hope you know what the difference between "lead" and "rhythm" is... for the sake of this conversation...hahaha

09/14/08 4:48 PM

well after nearly a decade of playing, i would hope i'd know the difference between the two...haha

09/14/08 8:53 PM

oh...

thank god..lolsmiling smiley

www.ultimate-guitar.com

They've got good tabs for 1,000,000 and Discipline.

no offense to your suggestion, but i really hate these internet tab sites.

09/15/08 3:47 PM

I thought all tabs sites were shut down? I had a great supply of bass tabs, then they were gone and I haven't bothered looking them up anymore.

Ultimate Guitar is operated in Russia and they pay royalties to the artists. So, they basically told the RIAA to go fuck themselves.

well, he's playing one note and the octave to that note (he does this in the album version as well). it's like a power chord without the note in the middle (use your index finger to mute that one).

HAHAHAHA!!!

But yes I agree, I do hate these guitar tab websites because all it provides are the tab formation of figuring out songs...

a.k.a numbered frets...

its kinda of a paradox in a way...because for those who want to get better at playing guitar...they find these tabs and think they're getting better...

when in fact you would be a million times better if you studied a lil guitar theory.

Honestly, just knowing the basics of theory will allow you to figure out so many other songs out there compared to people who "don't know theory" feel like some songs are impossible to play.

Oh and thanks "unreadable."

09/16/08 9:33 PM

I know plenty of guitar theory.

My problem is I'm tone deaf and can't figure out even basic chord progressions without reading it first.

EDIT:

And I posted in the wrong thread. For shame.

that's not uncommon. my ear didn't get better until i went to school and had ear-training classes.
i'm still not amazing at it, but I am definatly better at it than i was.

my girlfriend however, has an incredible ear for chord progressions.

the best advice i can give anyone is to sit down with your guitar and try to play along until it sounds right. i know it will be hard, and slow, but you'll start to be able to recognize pitches better by having your guitar right there.

09/17/08 5:36 PM

I can hear what string each note is on. Just by the tone.

It really does come with years of repeated practice.

09/17/08 11:43 PM

it is very hard as well to me.

I would consider myself mediocre in this category at best.

Give me a group of kids new to electric guitar and I'll teach everything there is to know about tone.

tone tone tone tone tone tone!!!smoking smiley

If you want to play "Head Down" on a regular guitar, just tune the 6th string down so open it sounds the same as the 5th string at the 12th fret. I'm pretty sure that's what I did. I don't have my guitar by me now but it's something like that. And sorry for the lack of proper music terminology in saying that, hah.

10/01/08 3:22 PM

I want a complete echoplex tab... there are at least 3 guitar parts in that song that no one has covered in a tab.

10/03/08 12:06 AM

If I'm not feeling lazy tomorrow, I'll try and tab out a few songs, beginning with "Echoplex".

10/03/08 9:29 AM

can sumbody get me accurate tabs for letting you and head down
