the first three silent hill soundtracks by Akira Yamaoka
are worth checking out.

I'd suggest (from Trent's catalogue) "The Fragile". It kinda follows a story of "things falling apart" and he uses an ecclectic assortment of violins, cellos, pianos, guitars, keyboards, synths, etc. And I remember reading that he used a lot of detuned or broken instruments for the album as well for a "beautifully broken" kind of feel.

Yes, but it doesn't sound like Ghosts. And suggesting a NIN album, i mean come on..

i suggest, explosions in the sky, and 65 days of static.

A little bit of self promotion...

That's my record label's website, you can get a lot of music on there for free. Sometimes similar to Ghosts, sometimes different. So just dive in and take a look around and helo yourself.

im a noob to nin, this album being the first thing i heard that really got me hooked on them. i think you should check out some buckethead stuff if you liked ghosts. colma or electric tears. both really deep albums like ghosts. really sad, loving and soothing music "lullabies for the dead"

04/14/09 3:41 AM

check out Hyneria Moss Soundscape

Their EPs Portals Vol. I and II are for free and AWSOME!
Music is heavily inspired by Ghosts, so I think everyone who´s stuck on Ghosts should check it out.
Btw, they posted links in the YOUR MUSIC forum on this here site; that´s how I came to know them. And I frequently listen to these tracks. Now go get them! :-)

I recommend Sound Tribe Sector 9. Also, seconding Ratatat.

If you like video game music, you should check out the Unreal and Unreal Tournament soundtracks, it's great stuff.

There are a lot of industrial bands that have side projects in Dark Ambient. The style is often referred to as Isolationism - ambient music that instills a sense of unease, or being alone in a vast empty harsh landscape. I've been into it since its inception last decade so when Ghosts came out I thought 'About time!'

So here's a few of the albums you'll need to locate. After all this time it won't be easy though!

Final - albums One, Two and Three. (Three is probably the closest match to Ghosts out there). Final is Justin Broadrick, of Godflesh, Techno Animal, and lately Jesu.

James Plotkin and Kazuyuki K Null - Aurora. James Plotkin was in O.L.D. Null has been screaming into a microphone and playing noisy guitars in Japan since 1984.

Main - The Hertz set, and Firmament I-VII, Motion Pool, Hydra-Calm. Main is Robert Hampson of Loop and G.C Green of Godflesh.

Lull - Cold Summer, Continue, Moments. Lull is Michael Harris, who started as drummer for Napalm Death, then half of the duo Scorn.

The Young Gods - Heaven Deconstruction. Like NIN, The Young Gods chose to keep the same name for their ambient project.

Other bands/artists I'd reccommend are Coil, Thomas Koner, Labradford, and Experimental Audio Research.

These are mine - however I'm sure that if you use music websites to look for Dark Ambient or Isolationism you can find more recent candidates.

One of my favorite bands ever... Sigur Ros.

They're icelandic. Very ambient, very atmospheric music. Incredible. You should like them a lot, or so I do. Not so much NIN's, but very Ghosts I-IVish.

08/30/09 12:06 PM

Pink Floyd's Ummagumma. It's very trippy and mostly instrumental.

08/30/09 1:41 PM

^Ummagumma yes thats true! great one!

John Zorn is an experimentalist. Great stuff to just chill too. very weird sometimes.

He's got hundreds of albums.

Aphex Twin, Selected Ambient Works Vol.2

Without question this inspired Reznor to create Ghosts. The similarities are far too glaring.

No track titles, just accompanying pictures, all "ambient atmospheres". Didn't Reznor say in an interview once that one of the reasons for Ghosts not having track titles was because he wanted the fans to make names up for them themselves (just like what happened with Afx's Selected Ambient Works vol.2).

Now on the subject of which album I'd pick? Aphex Twin's easily. Has moved me in ways no other artist has (even Reznor and that takes A LOT)

10/08/09 10:26 AM

Eno - Another Green World, Ambient 1: Music For Airports, Music For Films
Peter Gabriel - Birdy OST

02/20/10 8:26 PM

Check out 'The Ice Storm' score by Mychael Danna, it's a fantastic score and very much in a similar vein to Ghosts' more melodic sections.

Cant believe no one mentioned Bluetech. Shameshame.

I've always really liked the Diablo soundtrack. These tracks in particular: [www.youtube.com] , [www.youtube.com]

Mark Morgan - Vault Archives

There was a compilation put out in 1994 called Ambient 4: Isolationism. I have uploaded almost all of the tracks to YouTube and they are in this playlist: [www.youtube.com]

06/27/10 3:52 PM

Massive Attack or Meat Beat Manifesto

06/27/10 4:00 PM

I haven't seen it listed on here, but Ghosts always reminded me a lot of Coil and Throbbing Gristle.
I'm sure they both were a major influence during the making, since there is a ton of similarities in structure and tone, which is why I love this compilation so much.

You know the movie The Book of Eli?

Atticus Ross did the soundtrack for that. Pure gold in my opinion.

Even if the movie turned out to not be that great. Was seriously disappointed. But the music was still good.

If it's not been said already: Quake soundtrack. I think it's better than Ghosts.

Devin Townsend's Ki album. Really quiet stuff throughout most of it (like three songs get really heavy in bits though) and just amazingly atmospheric and talented.

Kaskade.

If you like good DJ-ing.

Saw him at Bonnaroo this year with no clue who he was and had the time of my life. smiling smiley

I don't know if it's been said already, but I'll add Einstürzende Neubauten, I've been listening to these guys a lot lately and I hear a lot of comparisons from Ghosts to Neubauten's heavy industrial sound...

Particularly 19 Ghosts III, which is one of my favourite tracks due to that heavy industrial sound. I am a huge EN fan, they were my very early intro to industrial music.

Brian Eno's new work even looks a lot like the Ghost cover. And there is a similar concept idea behind it, although the music doesn't sound 100% the same.
But pretty close.

Damn, it's always so much cheaper than in the German amazon shop and there are zero indie record shops in my are - not even really in Frankfurt -.-
