This is a message directed towards anyone and everyone. More specifically, this is a message for those who would like to participate and contribute to a project I am spear-heading myself.

The work is called “The Phantom Project”.

Ghosts I-IV has been circulating throughout my ears for quite some time now. When I first heard of it, I was really excited to hear what Trent would release in regards to an instrumental collection.

I’ve loved it ever since and in return, thought it’d be a great idea if we could all contribute our own compositions and then present them to Trent as a gift.

The goal of these compositions is to collaborate and encourage one another to produce our own compositions along the same style of Ghosts. Hence the name Phantom, as in fan-tom. Anyone who is familiar with audio/midi recording is welcome to join this project. I look forward to interacting with everyone who shows interest and at the end of it all, it would be awesome to put together all of our songs in one zip file for direct or torrent download.

Think of it as a gift to Trent and his crew of misfits for providing us with such a beautifully landscaped collection of music and memory. And no worries, the rules are exactly the same as when Trent first started working on Ghosts. Here is what he followed:

This music arrived unexpectedly as the result of an experiment. The rules were as follows: 10 weeks, no clear agenda, no overthinking, everything driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as... something.

Everyone who chooses to participate in this will follow the same guidelines. 10 weeks is plenty of time for everyone to compose and contribute their original works to the Phantom Project. And remember, Trent said that Ghosts was a very visually inspired musical score. In other words, he would take an image and then go about describing it with music.

However you choose to use your own visual representations is completely up to you. I will start this project off by sharing a link to my song, entitled 1 Phantom I, as well as showing the picture I used along the way:

One last thing before I head out. You are completely free to express yourself and your music in any way you desire. The only limitation...is yourself.

Best wishes to everyone reading this and I look forward to your replies. Take care.

Peace.

**P.S. - The Phantom Project isn't only for musicians. If you are an artist, photographer, graphic designer, etc......then feel free to post photos of your own work. This will give you the chance to see how others are inspired by your work from an audio perspective.

Everyone who participates or contributes, whether it be musically or artistically, will be given full credit for all their work. Everyone is held by their honor so let's not take advantage of someone or bring any sort of negativity into this thread. I have personally made sure that several mods are watching this thread so be careful if you have troll tendencies.

All the best.

sounds like something to do!!

02/01/09 3:04 AM

YES. I will do it. So should we just look at a picture we find interesting and describe it in music?

Enigma Part 1 at [myspace.com] is my Ghosts inspired work. I can clean it up (I want to re-edit it.) and donate it for the project. It isn't bound to any CD or band so I think its still an honest contribution with no intent of promotional gain.

02/01/09 4:33 PM

Thanks to everyone who has replied and chosen to participate so far. I've posted a similar thread on ETS which can be viewed here:

A couple more guidelines I would like to add:

* Here is The Phantom Project's MySpace page:

I will be adding songs and photos to the main playlist as they surface here. Make sure all songs are linked in mp3 format as well as jpg photos.

If someone would like to design the layout for the above MySpace page then go ahead and contact me via pm.

* Song upload limit is 5, photo upload limit is 5.

* Feel free to post links of this thread on any other site.

* If anyone can get in contact with the community over at [thisoneisonus.org] and let them know about this then that would be awesome.

* If you choose to use any of the original work contained in this thread for commercial purposes, please make sure you get in contact with the owner of the work and let them know of what you plan to do.

* And lastly, The Phantom Project is also open to directors and any other form of video art. I've always been interested in cinematic movie scores so if you would like to create videos to the songs you hear, or even request someone to add music to a video you've personally made, then feel free to experiment here. Like I mentioned earlier, everything is going to Trent.

Best wishes.

I can remix practically anything..given enough time I can create very nice variations of the original work.

My point:
When do you need this stuff?

I hope you approve. If you do, I don't care what numbers they are. Just happy that I can give back to the Treznor in some way.

EDIT: On second thought, disregard IV. I forgot I used some samples in there.

I'm liking a lot of what I'm hearing! tongue sticking out smiley

I'd like to get your expertise on something. How do you figure we go about numbering the Phantom collections?

In other words, remember how Ghosts has sections I, II, III, and IV? How many songs do you think we should set aside for each section?

I was personally thinking that perhaps 10 songs (+/-) for each section would be best. But we need to all agree on a specific number. Perhaps 9 is a good place to start. My vote is for 9.

But then again, I don't just want a bunch of random songs playing one after the other. There should be a flow to how the songs progress, know what I mean? Once all of the songs have been submitted we can all go about selecting which ones appear on which section. Besides, I'm sure we'll end up with at least 4 sections...possibly more.

Anyway, the floor is open so let's hear your ideas : )

I'm gonna go get some pizza...yum!

02/02/09 12:04 AM

Hmm.. 9 sounds like a good number.

What about Vol I will have 9, Vol II will have 10, Vol III will have 11... etc.

Hahaha I don't know.

I knew I forgot to mention something, thanks for reminding me.

With this project, I have no interest in accepting remixes of any kind. Feel free to submit your remixes to remix.nin.com or ninremixes.com. This compilation is specifically for original material. However, you're welcome to use some of the audio from the multi-track files if it's really what you desire.

Once again, NO remixes. The Phantom Project is open for 10 weeks so you can submit your songs within that time. No rush, take all the time you need. I want to make sure that what you share is something you're truly happy with.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

This sounds like a great idea. ill see if i can get my powerbook running ableton again and make something.

Also, how are you going to arrange the final 'product'? I mean are you just going to take all the audio/visual material and put it in your own order?

Okay, I've got most of my track down. Just need to fiddle with the effects and decide which picture I'm going to settle with.

Also, bluescreenofdeath's track is great!

Edit: cadair8, you should try Audacity for wav to mp3. Its free and easy. thumbs up

Johnny, hear my words very clearly: I do NOT want you submitting anything that you are unhappy with.

Look bro, this is your chance to show Trent how much you truly appreciate him. And most importantly, I want you to be proud of your work. This is a piece of you that will be shared with Trent. You owe it to yourself to only provide that which you are first and foremost pleased by.

My friend, you should never let yourself accept anything sub-par. You're free to submit as many songs or photos as you like. All I ask is that the end product is a clear and precise representation of that which you are truly happy with and something that makes your ears joyous or your eyes loving to observe.

Let me know if you have any further questions bro. Remember that you have 10 weeks (plenty of time). This is your time, don't forget about it.

---------------------------------

As for everyone else, I'm really enjoying both what I'm hearing and what I'm seeing. I'll be sumbitting my newest song later this evening. Until then...

Usually, your DAW should be able to convert wav to mp3. However, if for some reason it doesn't, check out:

It's very simple to use and all you have to make sure is select the proper input and output designations. Oh and don't worry about the option near the bottom that says "No video preset", just ignore it.

Oh and before I forget, a special thanks to tatterdemalion for designing The Phantom Project's MySpace page. Tatterdemalion, check your nin.com inbox, I've sent you a message with further details.

All the best.

I'll add something to this. I'll post it once I am finished!

I think this is a fabulous idea. I listen to Ghosts a lot on my commute and the other day I was just thinking about how Trent is always encouraging the creative process. I wish I had someone like that in my life earlier because art was ruined for me at a young age by art teachers that were telling me what I can and cannot do. I was actually FAILED because I would not do the type of style a teacher wanted me to. I thought art was supposed to be a form of expression, but I guess only if it's the right form of expression to some people. Unfortunately, my creative mind has been shut down for quite a while but I'm hoping the floodgates will open once again. Until then, all I can do is fully support efforts such as this. I can't wait to see/hear the finished product. Keep it up guys.

02/02/09 7:23 PM

Art, by it's very essence, is the heartbeat of life.

If it had not been for music, my world would be very dark. If it had not been for the various inspirations who pushed me and motivated me to compose and create, I fear the thought of what I would have become. And if it had not been for the indomitable human spirit and urge to continue, many of the great pieces of art we perceive today would cease to exist.

CanisXcore, it is a terrible atrocity with what you had to endure regarding your teachers. Sometimes people underestimate the power of original thought and would rather focus on making a dollar instead. Money and art have always been terrible bedfellows. This is precisely why I've decided to not make any form of monetary expression available in The Phantom Project.

Allow this to be YOUR time to shine. To quote an amazing Irish singer/songwriter, Damien Rice sings:

"You know when you've found it there's
something I've learned
'cause you feel it when they take it away"
-- Song: Amie / Album: O

Remember, no one else can make you feel inferior without your permission. Stay strong and I look forward to your submissions and rediscovered love.

Take care.

Thank you for the comment. I still draw every once and a while, but they are mostly dog portraits copied from photographs. I like them when I do them. Anything is better than nothing. But I haven't done any original work for a very long time.

Looking back on old photographs I think I would like to submit these for open interpretation

You'd be surprised with what your instruments are capable of after being tweaked around a little. Experiment and see what you come up with.
