i think sound is like visual art... there's a hell of a lot of stuff i look at in a gallery and think - why the fuck would anyone buy this shit?

[usually modern art & pop art, truth be told]

and i do the same with music, a lot of music, so i guess what someone thinks has no musical quality, another thinks is a beautiful song to the ears & soul. everyone has their own interpretations of what is music & what is garbage, or what is valuable and what is worthless.

This is pretty fucking incredible here. I love listening to any of these, just putting the whole thing on shuffle and writing or thinking or just screwing around. This is a soundtrack to so many different life experiences and emotions... it's amazing, and something only a collective could pull off.

I'm flattered you guys put me in there on 63. My recording equipment is pretty shit and my piano was built in the 1800's, so it's kind of nasty, but I love it anyway. It's an honor beyond words to be a part of this project.

Now, I'm going to go on a six-mile run to this. Peace guys.

I agree with that. But i think that, like i said previously, people were only based on having a Ghosts-like sound, by manipulating instruments, they forgot about actualling making a song. There are songs that i don't like, but that i know are well done and have musical quality in it. But some stuff, you have to explain me how you can enjoy it.

I agree that alot of the stuff is more experimental proper music, and don't believe it's because we're all "geniuses" but much rather because we have no clue what we're doing (at least in my case)

But that's the whole the fun of experimenting, trying, collecting and compiling. You're not really going to find much like it any where else, and at least because it's not trying to be "normal" music it doesn't sound false.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like EVERYTHING from the Phantom project, but some of my favourite stuff actually the bizare experimental tracks. I just see it as a chance to learn.

05/09/09 4:53 PM

that's kinda how i look at it too, a series of experiments. this is actually how i create all my sounds, about half end up somewhat songlike, a few others end up as [god forbid] more standard radio-friendly songs, albeit with awful production due to lax technology around my place.

on the other hand, a great deal of my stuff is just soundscapes, made up of drones, random sounds, and minimal melodic or percussive influence, more like the sounds from a game like quake or dead space, rather than actual songs. i create a lot of these to just play around my home when i need to get in a certain mindset to write or draw or create new songs.

as for my music experience, i pretty-much have none, completely self-taught and learning each day, other than a small amount of keys/piano lessons as a kid, playing in old punk bands as a drummer/bass player that went nowhere. it's all experimenting, fucking up, and occasionally ending up with something that works, and gigs of recordings that don't heh

05/09/09 5:11 PM

You can't have any less musical experience than me! But I'm determined to learn music properly now...

Perhaps this type of thing needs it's own name/genre...(lol this is how "labeling" stuff comes about.) I like the way you discribed it as a "soundscape" it's so true.

And speaking of ambient noise from video games, ever played the first Halo game? Amazing atmospheric sounds in that...

yeah i just work with whatever sounds i can generate or find, be it live instruments, found objects, old recordings, samples, whatever works to create the atmosphere i'm looking for. whenever i plan something and try to create it, it fails, so i just start with certain sounds, build on them and everytually something good or bad emerges...

yeah i remember that, bioshock, prey, dead space & doom 3 have some awesome sound design/scoring too. well worth checking out. audio in games is highly undervalued, it if sucks, it blows the whole atmosphere, no matter how good graphics are.

I'd like to echo pask and a few others' sentiments. Generally i think this was an awesome idea, and there are some brilliant songs here to enjoy, but they're to be found amongst a lot of pretty poor stuff. I don't want to be insulting or demeaning because obviously people put effort into this (or i assume they did), but i think maybe tighter restrictions on what was acceptable would have resulted in a better product at the end of it all.

Far too much is just ambient noise, some of which is even unpleasant or headache inducing to listen to. Some of it has basically been made to sound just like Ghosts, which serves no real purpose, and then stuff like the track which is just samples from porno movies - don't get me started.

Still, i dont want to appear too negative. Everything is meant in as constructive a way as possible. I do think it'd be best to try and improve the state of the Phantom project however before moving onto album art/making it one collection.

Exactly my thoughts. Except for the porno track, that turned me on.

Just kidding.

porno noise is only good if there's actual porno to go with it.
lol jk

by "porno track" do you mean #4 by Viscera/ Rezon8? i agree sort of... sorry r8 i think that one was in bad taste.. or at least the end of it was.

05/13/09 7:16 PM

Ha am I the only one that likes 4 Phantom I? I really enjoy it because it is something completely different and it really stands out. The background music to the heavy breathing is pretty awesome I think... It is also good to freak people out too =P

05/13/09 8:19 PM

i liked it too. i've done tracks sampling porn and human vocal sounds too, so i didn't think it was in bad taste - one track even had a break where a woman was heard to say "i think you got it in my eye!". nobody seemed too worried about it. tongue sticking out smiley

art students flopping around on a gallery floor covered in milk and charging people money to witness it is more in bad taste for me grinning smiley

I don't think it was in 'bad taste' by any means. Just look at Trent's tracks like Get Down Make Love and Closer. I'm not objecting to the use of porno samples at all, i just don't think it was a good song, or really a 'song' at all.

05/14/09 1:39 PM

I'm not saying i didn't like, it's different sure, but it's okay.
Samples are good. thumbs up

05/14/09 3:18 PM

Well... i only thought the end was in bad taste... it didn't fit well with the beginning, and the heavy breathing that sounded like it was setting up for something a little more then sex.

and does Closer really use porno samples?
where?

05/15/09 3:02 PM

So....
Sunday is "the day".

I assume that we must be waiting for the final product since this is a gift for T.

Anyone else thinks the same?

05/15/09 5:46 PM

that's what i thought was gonna happen... i was hoping a one-off cd would be made with the sounds and art and sent to trent in some way, rather than a torrent link he might not even download... either way i'll be able to download the whole thing soon =)

The Trent Reznor birthday thing got lost along the way. I don't think he'll ever hear it.

So anyone have any word on when we will get to see the photos along with each track?

I apologize for the delay in providing the photos. My schedule has been really hectic following the upcoming release of my debut album. Making arrangements with my manager and different labels has taken a lot of my time and I give you my word that I will have the photos organized and sent to BSOD by tonight.

Oh and yes, I will be making a personal gift of this collection for Trent for when I see him. Take care.

Peace.

UPDATE: There have been some issues with getting in contact with some of the photographers who've submitted photos. When they reply to my pm's about how to properly give them credit for their work, I'll send the photos to BSOD.

Thank you for your patience.

guys and gals, i downloaded the first 2 volumes. great work. i enjoy them both. awesome concept.

i am going to bed to volume 1 tonight.

*edit* three complaints. well, bitchy remarks.

1 the id3 tags were crazy. i had to go through and edit them individually.
and
2 no artwork... sad smiley would have been cool if a pic was picked for each track like on ghosts...
and
3 no lossless formats?

great music though. thanks.

yeah, i didn't want to listen to any of it until the website was finished..so now i'm thinking i may never listen to it.

05/24/09 3:39 AM

The website definitively needs to be updated.

05/24/09 9:26 AM

Damn it, I wish i hadn't just heard about this now... I would have loved to participate sad smiley

05/24/09 3:35 PM

i wasnt going to say this but i've just about had it. the the lack of professionalism put into this sickens me, i mean actually sickens me. im not talking about the music i mean the way its been put together. the 1st 2 volumes came out good expect for the lack of album art. why arent III and IV on the phantom site i donwloaded phantom 4 just to find out most of the ID3 tags were horrible. and whats up with the 2 wma tracks anyway i completely deleted IV i shouldnt have to edit all of it u should thats what you're supposed to be doing. why couldnt u just wait and release the whole I-IV volumes at the same time with art and the right ID3 tags and put it on the phantom.ninremixes.com site i was excited for this but now that i found out it was half assed im pretty dissapointed.

ohh and thanks for spelling my name wrong on 32 Phantom III its My Electronic Gun not My Electric Gun. i PMed u with all the info.
