Ghosts I-IV: Personal Album Reviews

I was actually a bit skeptical about a fully instrumental, 36-track album. I was actually blown away when I bought it. It's varied and there are so many instruments and synth sounds in play here. A lot of different emotions going on here. As JoePearson said, it's great for doing homework.

Tww porblems I found with it, though. One is that the album peaks a little too early (at least in my opinion). Ghosts 1-10 are excellent; the rest are good, but they don't have the feel of the first ten. Also, I personally find a few of the tracks to be a little unappealing. They don't exactly fit my preferences. But hey, everybody's different.

Ghosts is a very different and very emotional experience. I would love to see more volumes of Ghosts in the future. If you're a big NIN fan, you'll love this. If you're more single-oriented person (you casually listen to NIN but you don't necessarily love them) you might have a hard time understanding this one. If you love instrumentals you must pick this one up. I highly reccomend it despite its few flaws. 7.5/10

I love ghosts to just drift and fade away...also great to just sip coffee to in the A.M. I hope in the time before the soundwave festival gigs that Trent finds a way to release more volumes of Ghosts online...I think it was a gutsy and amazing release...I want more...the instrumental works of NIN have been some of my fave stuff...right up there with ENO in my book...more ghosts please!

Kind of like The Fragile, at first a piece of crap but the more listens it gets better until it becomes at the top of the list. Or so that is for me. Some of the tracks seem new and shiny, not like some filler which is to be expected due to it only be instrumental.

Is that really what you thought of The Fragile on your first listen?

My hubby surprised me with an early present the other night - Ghosts. Then I gave myself a gift - I downloaded Year Zero. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME!! My collection is almost complete. the finger smiley

I believe Ghosts I-IV stresses personal feelings. Primarily anger, happiness, loneliness, sadness...desperation. These are emotions Reznor has experienced throughout his life. Just a thought.

I think it is a very good album. However, it might have been better if Reznor and his pals spent more time on the songs. It's a letdown, but the album deserves a 9/10.

The album's something new from NIN, less angsty and more of a soundscape to your life. It's detailed and sonically varied while still retaining the 'NIN vibe' if there was such a thing.

It's for those moods where you're not too emotionally affected by anything and just want to chill. It's especially good when you're blazed, because of all the different sounds.

The pictures that accompany each track are your sort of 'guide' in a way, in that portray a landscape that suits the current track. If you can match that landscape with another one similar; it will work as the sountrack to everything around you.

Peaceful and relaxing, heavy and hyper-powered! Ghosts I - IV is a bit of everything. The only down-point I can think of is the lack of Trent's voice, and I don't mean his lyrics, just his vocal harmonies, which I find to be really soothing.

Am i the only one who thinks ghosts can be EXTREMELY repetitive? I mean yeah, some of the stuff's amazing, but a lot of it just ends up sounding boring to me. Too many of the songs just have the same chord progression/beat all the way through... that being said though i think the guy can write some great stuff on the piano.

for those of you who claim Ghosts sounds horrible in terms of recording quality, what equipment, may I ask, are you using to evaluate these recordings?

I believe that the audio elements in Ghosts sound much more free from each other, with more dynamic range than many of the previous recordings.

...although I won't deny that most mainstream albums are cranked right up for maximum loudness. It's horrible on the ears and disappointing to listen to. I love music, and I love listening to it on my hifi...but when good songs (from any artist or album) are screaming with no dynamic range, linear in volume, and resolution shot down the tubes, it's a bit of a piss off especially when some of us invest in well designed audio components.

Interesting comparison with the Depeche Mode Vinyl. I may have to get my turntable in order just to try a few of these comparisons. I've been buying vinyl for a long time but never listen to it...I just tell myself that someday I may invest in a good turntable since I already have a great phono preamp from Ayre.

I gotta say I think the whole ghosts volumes is brillant.I love it!Hope NIN makes another one.I think it's great to be able to listen to some of trents music without lyrics to it,not having to give much thought to the meaning of the songs.Obviously theres a certain mood to every song but you don't have to ponder any lyrical meaning.I think NIN creates some of the best instrumental songs.Like la mer,the frail, and warm place. My favorite Ghosts tracks would be 1,2,28,and 34.

Trent:" I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

I hope for a sequel!

I mean, I used to think that was The Fragile, and then I listened to Ghosts. Wow.

I mean, he was already an artist and then with Ghosts, he elevated his status into something ethereal and transcendent. I just feel like there was no other direction to go after Ghosts, and I had hoped he had stayed instrumental after this album until he retired. And then The Slip was released, and I was kind of let down.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE Trent's work, but, I just believe that this was the height, the absolute apex of his musical genius, and that there was no going back to precedent after this.

What does everyone else think? Opinions, comments, and feedback is gladly welcomed!

Haven t purchased ghosts yet, although I've listened to a lot of tracks, and yeah. Instrumentals are cool, but I like vocals and lyrics.

05/10/09 6:36 AM

i like both. i think ghosts was trent finally being able to release an album where a label couldn't say "fuck off, you can't sell that - it has no fuckin' lyrics!"

i assume there'll be more like this, maybe not as another ghosts collection, but somewthing altogether different, and trent has had instrumentals in most albums or ep's since broken, so it's not something altogether new for him, it's just that he was finally able to release an entire album of instrumentals.

i'm sure there'll be more of them in future releases, as even the slip had a couple in there too... who knows, he may even get the gig scoring the year zero tv/film projekt...

Honestly, I so prefer Ghosts over The Slip, but TS is still a fucking awesome album. I wouldn't say Ghosts is what NIN needs to be, because when has NIN ever stayed the same thing after an album? Trent's music is constantly changing, and I love that.

05/18/09 8:02 PM

If anything, Ghosts I-IV is an indication of the quality of Trent's artistry. I think The Fragile is still probably the "pinnacle" of his work, if only because he put the most of himself into it. Ghosts on the other hand was an experiment. More than anything, I think, it shows that he's still "got it".

05/19/09 1:31 AM

The thing I like about instrumentals is how they don't have a theme or story that is given by lyrics, so you can create your own story using your imagination.

05/19/09 10:15 AM

'Twas beautifully epic. No more further descriptions needed.

I think it was definitely the pinnacle of something but I can't quite put my finger on it.

I think Ghosts is Trent's (not to mention the rest of NIN) best album so far, although i do also enjoy The Downward Spiral. I am so hoping for Ghosts V-VIII.

I,too, hold The Fragile as my personal favorite. Ghosts took me a while to penetrate. Artistically, it was a bold move. I dig it, dense as it is. Pinnacle of TR's artistry...? Hmmm... He's dabbled in instrumentals before, Still has some similar sounds on it. Ghosts reminded me of Brian Eno and some King Crimson from long ago. My girlfriend really likes it. Ambiant and ecclectic. She appreciates the absence of lyrics, however i am a big fan of Trent's writing and his voice as well. It kinda stands on it's own as a demonstration of the versatility and breadth of the musicianship these people possess. It's something i enjoy listening to when i am not wanting to be distracted by vocals. The live performances on last summers tour really were the highlight of the show. I had a much deeper appreciation after i saw the Ghosts music live a couple of times. Very unique. I'd like to think the pinnacle of TR's artistry is yet to come.

I don't know if i think Ghosts is so extraordinary that Trent should consider his musical ambition as fulfilled. It's a line of thought that that led to the huge delay between TDS and the Fragile, and i think the great thing about ghosts is that it's a way to diversify nin as an entity. I think the absolute greatest thing about Ghosts is that it's not so angry. Even though TDS is my favorite album ever i don't listen to it very often because it's rather demanding, in it's heavy music and subject matter. Ghosts on the other hand let's your mind free, and as Trent said it's meant to accompany a day dream, rather than the depression of The Fragile or the dysotopian future of Year Zero.

06/06/09 12:55 PM

I don't think you can compare Ghosts with The Fragile... Really, The Fragile was his master piece, it's just a wonderful, powerful album, and honestly, Ghosts doesn't even come close.

I like the album, of course, I think it is pretty interesting, but it doesn't sound like a master piece... It's just a bunch of tinny songs with no lyrics, no specific meaning... I love it, because you can make what you want out of it, but it isn't the best NIN album for sure.

As for The Slip, that's my least favourite NIN album. For me, it was quite a let down.

I just miss the wonderful details and hiden sounds and notes in all of the oldest NIN songs, as well as the magnificent lyrics.

06/06/09 4:59 PM

I agree with a lot of people on here that claim The Fragile was his best work. I am with you completely on that one. I absolutely hail it as my favorite, because, it completely mirrored events occuring in my own life at the time I discovered The Fragile. It really helped me through a lot of bad times, and to this day, The Fragile is still my favorite NIN album.

I even said at one point, that, I thought The Fragile was the creative apex of his work, but, after hearing Ghosts...I just don't think so, anymore.

There are soooo many different layers of emotion and the album is so completely thought provoking for me, that, I don't have a hard time digesting it like a few other people would. And normally, I hate songs that are contemplative, because, it hurts for me to think since there's been a lot of negative times in my life, and I've been in a cycle of pain for a while; but, with Ghosts...it isn't there. That pain doesn't surface, and I can just wrap myself up in the melodies of this art.

I think another reason why I love it, is because of the complete lack of lyrics. It's like what a few other people have said "you make what you want of it", and I love that.

And what pwrstick said, I completely agree with you: It's the pinnacle of human existence. Well said, thank you ^_^
