I like ghosts for the fact that it's more of a true reflective album. since there are no words or lyrics then there is little in direction of motive. it's just about the little noises that echo off of our thoughts.

the slip is underrated... sad smiley

but ghosts is a powerful album and i'm glad it received the success amongst his fanbase that it deserved. it could arguably be his most personal album because it has the least definition, allowing it to make a home in new minds as it pertains to the moment the individual experienced it. it's raw, without borders, and demands that you connect the dots yourself, meaning it takes up its own residence in your mind. thus, he expands his identity by imbuing it upon new vistas. it is personal in the sense that you are forced to interact with it one on one and you have no choice but to make a decision right there... or just pass it off as abstact and without meaning. either case, he wins because he seems to only want to affect the open minded.

When it comes to Trent's albums I think The Fragile was his "Sgt. Pepper", so to speak, the pinnacle where sonically, musically and lyrically everything reached absolute perfection. Ghosts stands alone from the rest of his catalog because Ghosts is, at least to my ears, modern classical music.

I can't see Ghosts as a pinnacle, because more or less TR is being doing this since the beggining; but maybe we can see it as the begining of something new; it's like the album put all togeather the texture of the music, the kind of experimental composing formula in each song, the graphic art, the amazing distribution mode... for me there are lots of components that makes Ghosts a place to learn; when I see all the new fancy bands on MTV trying to push for something new, my mind goes like "Thank god I love Nine Inch Nails"

And sorry for my shitty english

I mean, I used to think that was The Fragile, and then I listened to Ghosts. Wow.

I mean, he was already an artist and then with Ghosts, he elevated his status into something ethereal and transcendent. I just feel like there was no other direction to go after Ghosts, and I had hoped he had stayed instrumental after this album until he retired. And then The Slip was released, and I was kind of let down.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE Trent's work, but, I just believe that this was the height, the absolute apex of his musical genius, and that there was no going back to precedent after this.

What does everyone else think? Opinions, comments, and feedback is gladly welcomed!

I think this is a problematic [and yet subjective, so wholly warranted] description of Trent's achievements in aesthetics. He, I would think certainly, would say there is nothing that can be transcended to; what we are aiming for here as Nietzscheans [see TDS; track 3] is immanence, not a transcendence to something. Not some sort of ethereal (as you put it) movement to a fixed point of reference, be it a deity or something higher than us.

But then again, aesthetics are subjective and I'm a Fragile man.

Amen.

As for Ghosts, I was blown away after I picked it up. It rubbed me the right way from the beginning, and there are some jewels in that album.

As for the Slip, I LOVE THAT ALBUM. I also like the hidden sounds, the textures of more ellaborate NIN material, but the raw element in the Slip is one of the things that drew me the most to it.

I like the fact that NIN is the incarnate of its last album. So NIN never remains the same. To nay-sayers that believe that Trent and NIN should've stayed in 1994 need to tweak their ability to listen to music. The fact that they've never stayed the same is the reason why they're still around. And why they still kick major ass.

Personally my favourite nin tunes are instrumentals..so i nearly shat myself when i heard ghosts was an instrumental release, i was waiting for it since the downward spiral (further down the spiral is prob one of my favourite all time album). Then when i heard it i was quite surprised at how eclectic it was, twas even better than i could have imagined. I'm a more of an instrumental/electronic guy so i'd say tis perfect for me. I'd like to think Trent will continue down a more experimental road, push the sonic boundaries a bit more..

well i would have to agree that album was genuis i do like the fragile my faviorate album is the downward spiral cuz of all the storys behind that album (not saying others dont) but the main thing i liked about ghosts it was instrumental any how i love trents voice i think this was a great album

i think that he mightve learned a lot about his own music and where he really wanted to be creatively in ghosts

so i wouldnt say this era was his only highest point because there was a series of those throughout but it definately changed things for the better

i think ghosts was NIN masterpiece. so raw and visual. each track tells a story without a word. not an easy thing to pull off. the best music is made with no direction and just playing what ever comes to the head at that moment.

I think it was definitely the pinnacle of something but I can't quite put my finger on it.

The pinnacle of human existence.

When i get high on anything, there is nothing more awe-inspiring than the music of Ghosts I-IV. It creates mind explosions. It is my second favorite nin album and definitely has the most plays on my mp3 player. my top 25 is 24 Ghosts songs + TDTWWA. smiling smiley

It's interesting and nice to hear somebody profess such high standards for the Ghosts album. I've never actually tried to consider it as Trent's definitive piece of art, although, as far as entire albums go, it just may be. The Fragile frequently gets pretty artsy, but the entire thing is practically a monochromatic package of anger and negativity. Ghosts feels much more like the musical equivalent of some kind of complex polygon. The entire thing was composed in ten weeks, and resulted in, I guess, Reznor's least mechanical work. The lack of vocals almost adds to it's beautiful ambiguity and taps into all kinds of raw elements. It's lovely.

On the other hand, I do feel like it suffers a significant dip in strength partway through. Ghosts II, mostly. To me, everything becomes mushy and indistinguishable, and not nearly as impressive. Nearing Ghosts IV, however, it makes a wonderful recovery. grinning smiley

Up until now, I've also considered The Fragile to be Trent's most creative piece. Although Ghosts is presently competing for that title rather fiercely, certain tracks on Fragile surpass any individual Ghosts song. Like, for instance, La Mer! grinning smiley

For organization's sake, let's keep all personal thoughts on the album in the appropriate thread.

Merging.

When I found out that NIN were doing an etirely instrumental album, without named tracks, I must admit that the idea struck men as maybe being a bit pretintious.

Of course though as soon as I had listened to it through a few times the idea was making more and more sense, until it was evident that it was sheer genius and now ghosts i-iv is one of my favourite NIN albums

Thank god (or whatever power you believe in) that there was no record label at the time, because I don`t imagine for a second that record execs wouls have taken that kindly to the concept!
