Many tapers don't like their stuff distributed in MP3.

The readme for Seattle didn't mention it, so that is why it's out there. The rest do. Just download it and convert it yourself.

Yar, I know, and I can, but I'm not exactly drowning in pools of bandwidth.

You can find the 16bit and the 24bit lossless (FLAC) recordings on Dimeadozen and the 24bit version is also on Demonoid.

GA recording has surfaced on Dime for reference, looking foward to hearing down in it with the new band smiling smiley

Decent quality boot, a bit bass heavy though, could do with some EQing. MASSIVE PROPS to NIN for the performance of Down In It and reptile. Bloody brilliant.

Don't you have to be a member of dime to use it? If so, does anyone have any extra invites? I would love to have a copy of GA and TN.

You do have to be a member yeah, but it's not an invite system; they have a max of 100,00 users, and they clear them out every day all through the day. Just keep refreshing and eventually you'll hit a signup form smiling smiley

Bluefish22 from ETS

I just made this plea on ETS and thought that I should post this here too.

I realize that you can't please everyone...but, for the love of God, do tapers have to post flac? I'm so grateful to all you tapers out there, but I just want to know what is the point of uploading flac? Is it so you can have a good quality version to burn to a cd? These are not studio or soundboard recordings, so do they have to be in flac? This is out of curiousity and knowledge sake.

However, just to have access to flac, I finally learned how to convert to wav. But, I just learned the hard way that 24-bit flac converted to wav still wouldn't play on my iPod, nor could I burn it to a disc.

Plea to tapers, with all due respect and gratefulness, could you please post in mp3, if possible, and to make uploads accessible to more people? Could you please upload to nintorrents, sendspace, or megaupload, instead of dime? Please? This is just a request. Let me reiterate that I'm grateful to all tapers and uploaders.

08/17/08 11:32 AM

Um, no?

Tapers use flac as it is lostless, the quality is exactly as it was recorded, not butchered like MP3s.

Convert it with foobar2000/dbPowerAMP to mp3 for your iPod or disc.

What's wrong with dime? it's easy to get in if you just wait a while, I got in on my second day of trying! nintorrents is a small community, doesn't get the exposure of a major site, and a lot of people will miss out as they are not "die hard" fans who are aware of specific torrent communities.

Sendspace/Megaupload are useless due to the normal size of recordings (omg mp3 plz!!! No).

Basically; it's not gonna happen.

I'll upload flac versions of shows multipart on rapidshare if you like, nothing else though.

08/17/08 11:22 PM

on that topic, i kinda agree, but thats just me. flac is fine and dandy, but do you REALLY need your shitty sounding 15+ year old cassette recordings in such a high bitrate? or ALREADY lossy MD recordings? in all honesty, the mics tapers use aren't high enough quality to produce any noticeable difference when the recordings are compressed to 320kbps mp3 or flac.

and because of that, when i tape the Oakland show, im releasing it MYSELF in mp3 and flac to please both parties. the regular people and the @#$%& audiophile. the video im gonna film? i'll upload it all to youtube myself.

i lol heartily at the 24bit recordings from this tour. honestly, are these recordings even WORTHY of being in that kind of quality? this isnt professional studio stuff, this is some guy hiding a mic while sitting in whatever spot he gets stuck in with (usually) terrible acoustics. its all just a way to increase Dime ratios.

08/18/08 3:50 AM

We should all be grateful that we even get this recordings for free!
The equipment is expensive and the tapers spend their spare time to work on the recordings. Transferring and splitting the single tracks of the recordings takes some time. And everyone who ever did this before knows what i'm talking about.
And besides, the tapers don't even have the opportunity to fully enjoy the show like every other person in the audience.
I'm 40 years old and remember the times very well when one had to go to record fairs and had to pay a lot for live recordings.
If you don't like the offered file format, don't download it.

08/23/08 6:04 PM

FLAC is used because it makes sense to distribute something in the highest possible quality, which is lossless. You can't go back to FLAC quality once it's been converted to mp3.

Of course, to some degree it's a throwback to the days between tape-trading and bittorrent. People would download 128kbps rips from Napster or wherever, burn them, and then trade them around without telling people, which pollutes the trading pool and makes it harder to actually get a 1:1 copy.

08/23/08 9:21 PM

I like to think the whole FLAC or MP3 discussion is best likened to the choice between CD and cassette.

FLAC's are the CD or clone of the source material, while MP3's are the cassette or copy of the source. Serious traders and tapers prefer sharing clones rather than copies. With the clone as a source, you can make copies to your own personal preference.

Once you share a copy, you run the risk of spreading that copy as the source... sort of like trading on VHS.

Imagine purchasing a CD recording and after you open it up - come to the realization that you purchased a CDR rather than a CD. Or worse yet, a cassette in the shape of a CD. You expected to get a CD, but you got a cassette instead... now you have to go back and find the CD.

That's the concern with sharing MP3's rather than FLAC's.

Thank you for the contributions regarding FLAC vs MP3.
If you want to discuss the technical aspects, you'd better do it in the tech forum / audio section and leave this thread for the announcement of live recordings - see thread title and eatyourblud's first post.
Thanks.

www.ninlive.com is a very good website for live audio.

08/24/08 11:49 AM

I am uploading all the new shows to my website for those who can't or don't want to do torrents:

I am all for flac cos it is lossless but I completely get why people want mp3s. It does seem crazy that tapers complain about their recordings being circulated as mp3, especially when Trent offers mp3s of his own work.

In case you are wondering, no I didn't rip mp3s of the recent recordings. I might not agree with the tapers attitude but that doesn't mean I don't respect them for taping in the first place.

08/26/08 9:24 PM

did anyone get a bootleg of the St. Louis show on 8/20? i know it hasn't been long enough for it to be available, i just want to know if i can be looking forward to one. thanks!

08/26/08 10:50 PM

One last point about mp3 vs FLAC. It's true that it's hard for most people to tell the difference between the two formats in a STUDIO produced recording, however in a LIVE recording, the compression is much more noticeable. You'll hear it most in the audience clapping and cymbals.

When I listen to Sirius or XM, I can tell it's compressed most easily when I listen to heavy metal and punk.

Dallas ,TX 8-18-08?

I know many people who have recorded the shows with audio. I don't know if it would be wise to put a list up on here or not. Maybe a mod can approve or not? I know for a fact Dallas and St. Louis were recorded. I have them coming to my house soon. Here are my recordings from the first leg of the tour. They will be on my website soon. (I have been really busy with school)

As long as shows aren't being sold for profit, it should be fine...

09/01/08 5:30 PM

well. I know some people like mp3's and I totally dig that. I will have those up on my website soon. At least I can handle what rate they come at when I convert the lossy files to mp3. 192 good for everyone? I will be putting more recordings of NIN on my website as well. all from this tour.
