Autograph authenticity

I need help and opinions on the authenticity of a few autographs I have. I did not get any of these personally. There are three of them, we'll go one at a time.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr288/mister_pister/DSC00039.jpg
This first one is on a full registered retail copy of Quake, digipak edition. My opinion it is fake.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr288/mister_pister/DSC00040.jpg
This one I believe to be authentic. The one just above Trent's autograph I believe to be Chris Vrenna. The one to the left of that I am unsure. They are on an insert in a black plastic case, entitled Live at the Pipeline Newmark, NJ 7/19/90. The VHS is video of that show. Apparently a bootleg.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr288/mister_pister/DSC00041.jpg
This last one is on the front insert of the self-titled Prick album produced by Trent. Trent's autograph does not look genuine to me. I have no clue about Kevin's (Prick) autograph.

01/13/09 6:39 AM

I'm too sleepy to scan any of my autographs, but I can tell you that the first & third are definitely fake TR autographs... and I'd be willing to wager Kevin's bogus as well. The middle one looks the closest to his signature, but unless you were there - it's difficult to authenticate.

*edit* you can find more info in this thread: click me.

*edit2* here are a few pics of my autographs... they are all authentic:

11/21/94 - At the hotel after the Tampa show. I remember TR being a little drunk and surly, but it was fucking awesome.
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r110/soppingwetlabia/1994_Tampa.jpg

11/22/99 - After the show by the tour bus in Berlin. It was fucking cold! Danny was excited to hear someone speaking English and Charlie was really happy to sign.
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r110/soppingwetlabia/1999_Berlin.jpg

10/21/05 - The Jacksonville M&G (my first show on that tour).

I'll put it this way: if these are fakes, the people who signed it were the most convincing impostors I've ever met:

01/13/09 8:25 AM

I think the middle one is the most authentic-looking. Trent's looks real and from what I recall from seeing other examples of Chris's, his does too. The top and bottom one look either totally fake or perhaps he was writing with his left hand at the time or otherwise not signing in the manner he usually does.

But still, even ones that look real could be fake. It's not hard to do. If they didn't sign it in front of you or you don't know the person personally who it came from, you'll probably never really know for sure.

01/13/09 12:07 PM

to be honest... I think they all are fake.

when it comes to autographs I personally don't buy them ever, either it comes from TR and you are personally there to witness it.. you never know.

thats why I got the ghosts ultra-limited edition! smiling smiley

01/13/09 12:37 PM

The middle one looks authentic - almost identical to the Ghosts Ultra one, and to the signature on my BYIT poster. I would say the other two are 100% fake - definitely look different entirely.

I'd like to point out I did not purchase these items because they had been autographed. I purchased a NIN lot on eBay several years ago that included the Quake and Prick items. The VHS (the middle pic) was a seperate purchase on eBay around the same time. It was the items themselves that warrented my purchasing them. I can't help but wonder about the authenticity of the autographs though. Thank you for the opinions posted thus far. Seems the general concencous goes along with my own opinions. Anyone know who that third autograph is (top left middle pic)?

P.S. That lot I purchased also included quite a few UK releases, including Head Like A Hole, March Of The Pigs, Closer To God, and We're In This Together Pts. 1, 2, and 3, as well as other odds and ends. I paid less than $40 (incl. S&H) for the entire lot. smoking smiley

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess James Woolley. Saw what looks like a J, W, and L in there. I've never seen his autograph so I'm not the best source.

01/18/09 12:51 PM

Thanks for the pics FULLMETAL... appreciate it. I have pretty much concluded that the middle picture I posted is of a genuine autograph and the other two are fake. This was my thinking all along. As you said though.. there is no 100% sure way to know unless I was there, or I knew the person personally that got the autograph. Neither is the case, so I'm going to have to assume. Frankly I guess it doesn't really matter cause it is for my own personal collection, I'm not looking to sell it or make any money from it or anything like that. Was just simply curious...

It's a long shot, but My best guess is Kim Prevost. She is a NOLA Jazz vocalist and had a part on The Fragile. Here's an interview from 2000. My guess is that someone was trying to get signatures from the Fragile era band and saw they had relatively easy access to one of the contributors and got the auto. You could email her the pic and see if she recognizes it.

If anyone of you is bidding on this, it's gotta be a fake and I would consider retracting your bid.

fake signed With Teeth vinyl

Edit: I may be looking to purchase/trade for something signed by TR soon. Real sigs only please..that would be messed up to scam a fellow NIN fan eh? Pm me with offers please. Thank you much!!

How do you guys get your autographs, I've been trying to get one for years and have never managed it. I'm about to just give in and buy one of ebay but who knows if those are authentic. A couple days ago at the KC show he staid in the hotel that my mother in law does public relations for and all the big name booking but I thought it would be rude to wait there for him to come out, but it seems that's what everyone on ebay has done.

05/31/09 4:26 PM

Don't buy autographs off of eBay. Most of the time they're fakes or forgeries.

Right now NIN is offering a package of autographed and numbered albums for $1000 with all proceeds going to charity. You could see if anyone wants to pool funds together to get this. But be advised that it's limited to 100 total packages.

06/29/09 6:48 PM

I posted this on the Q&A thread w/o realizing this thread existed...so I know this autograph is legit...obtained a Chicago M&G w/ TR and Peter Murphy during the NIN/Bauhaus tour. My question now is...how much to offer for it?

I assume this is authentic because I got it at the auction below but some confirmation would be nice smiling smiley

^^That definitely appears to be Trent's, and he's fond of making that little "NIN" logo in the box.

Aaron's signature also looks real, as does Josh's and Ally's, which I have seen in person.

A bunch of those Dean Evo guitars were auctioned off for Katrina. That appears to be one, although it doesn't seem much "destroyed" to me. I'd say it's almost certainly legit and the signatures are real.

And I am so jealous. Most of those guitars got smashed to bits.

First of all, thanks for creating this thread. I think it will be a very useful resource for the community. I have several authentic autographed items (the first 3 items below), but I do have a question about one item that I am unsure of:

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/bulkhead72/th_aatchb-signed2-1.jpg
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/bulkhead72/th_nin-broken-framed1.jpg
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/bulkhead72/th_ghosts-signed2-1.jpg

Is this "Fixed" signature real? I'm 50-50 about it. The signature flows very nicely though. Would be happy to hear some opinions about it. Thanks.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd187/bulkhead72/th_ninfixedsigned.jpg

P.S. @ mr_pister: Others have mentioned this already, but I think the second autograph is a close call. I would wager that it is authentic since the letters "T", "e", and "R" look similar to the classic Trent sigs.

I did the EDLC M&G in Charlotte. Trent signed my messenger bag with the usual "Tren Rezn", but he signed my Wave Goodbye tour shirt (along with the rest of the band) "Trent Reznor". It's very clearly "Trent Reznor" (sorry, no pic available but I know it's genuine because I was there).

Any ideas as to why he would do that?

07/19/09 6:43 PM

if you can read Trent it is fake

authentic Reznor signs Trem or Tren

If you saw him with your own eyes (and no, taking the sworn word of a friend doesn't count; I insist that you must have seen him sign that messenger bag with your own eyes) than post a pic of it because it is the first time, to my knowledge, that I've heard him signing his name with a "t" at the end of it.

I'll take pics of the bag and the shirt but I SWEAR I was right in front of him when he signed both at the Charlotte M&G. I had just given him an engagement gift and he offered to sign the shirt too despite the handlers saying we could only get one item signed. I found a pic of my gift (along with a couple of others) sitting on the table in front of him in either the Charlotte thread or the VIP Experience thread. I'll try to find it so I can post it too. I think he also felt sorry for me because I had just told Justin how I thought I was going to pass out from the heat and humidity.

That's awesome! Thanks for the pics. We can use it to compare with others in the future. I can't wait to see that it looks like! grinning smiley

I recently found this shirt at a thrift store. It's a [Live_With_Teeth_2005] Tour shirt that appears to be signed by Trent in some sort of white marker. I can't tell if this is real or fake. What do you guys think?

I would call "fake". I've never seen Trent's sig with the final "t" to his first name. His sig always reads as "tren rezn". You may want to ask in the Collection sub forum, where more informed people can help you!

edit: COME BACK, DUDE! Your t-shirt looks very much like the real deal after all!

HOLY SHIT!!! I JUST BOUGHT THE EXACT SAME SHIRT FOR $15.
EXACTLY THE SAME SHIRT!

LOOK!

I just bought this shirt at Value Village for $15. I'm not sure about the authenticity of the autograph on the front. It's WT era and it doesn't look like it's ever been worn.

http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww58/FusedGhost/DSCN0116.jpg

EDIT: Now that I've looked at it and the rest of the autographed stuff in this thread, I still think this is his signature, but that it was silk-screened onto the shirt along with the logo. Like, it's his real signature, but if you look at the location of the signature on the shirt (about nine lines, ironically, over to the bottom of the "T" from the top left hand corner of the box surrounding the NIN logo.) I'm pretty sure it's still an original shirt from the factory though. The thing that has me baffled is that both of our shirts were in thrift stores.
