That thing was about $1200 1982-dollars, has an incredible internal balance mechanism that keeps the needle as light and stable on the record as a conventional horizontal turntable. It can auto-detect and cue an EP vs LP. It's not a POS.

Don't know about $1200, but considering you can get it for 28 pounds on ebay (even though it's not working properly), or an auction ending at 33 €, and considering that it doesn't have any kind of coverage on the internet (most high quality vintage turntables have their followers), I dare say this was a failed experiment of Sharp's.

I'll stick to horizontal turntables any day.

And also: turtables with a lot of automatics mean low quality sound reproduction. Turntables with automatic needle lowering (and raising) mechanisms, or automatic on/off, or electronic speed change, also suffer from a higher noise than manual turntables (where you have to be more careful, but the results are far more awarding). That's why I'm sticking with my Project.

Haven't been to stereo2go?

And yea, you can occasionally find them cheap on ebay. Broken. I got mine from the original owner, in person, some 10 years ago.
It doesn't have auto on/off, or electronic speed change (that's controlled by a pot on one of the boards, yes I've been inside it). It has a light sensor that detects the size of the disc loaded, and it has a balancing mechanism that won't let it play if tilted more than a few degrees, and it has a fancy spinning fan that controls the speed at which the door opens.
Anyway I wasn't trying to convince you or anyone else to get one. I was just showing my player and got my ass jumped for it, apparently by people who've never even seen one in person.

Oh don't get offended... And don't take it personally! I haven't seen your type of turntable in person, but every article, comment and opinion I read lead me towards one single goal: a horizontal manual turntable. And trust me, before I bought my turntable, I did a lot of research till I settled on what seems to be the most publicly accepted type of turntable for an audiophile listening.

Every turntable fan and enthousiast will tell you the same thing: a perfect turntable must have 1 motor, detached from the main chassis, which drives a heavy platter via a belt, plus a long tonearm with a high quality cartridge.
Anything else (and this includes sensors, electronics, automatic raising of the tonearm, automatic switching between speeds etc) is just bad for the final sound - because of interference.

So again, don't take my critique personal - I've seen people do things to their vinyl that I wouldn't want done to my worst enemies, so your turntable is quite innocent in that regard...

anyone listened to their copies of the new TDS vinyl reissue? do the sides end the same way (i.e. the end of The Becoming has the I Do Not Want This sounds but fades out, and Eraser has the Reptile intro but fades out) or are they different?

09/28/08 9:39 AM

TDS re-press...only differences are on that sticker that was already mentioned and the fact that it's on 180gram vinyl.

And also: EXCEPT for broken, the sound is better?! The Broken UK vinyl is the prime example of a BETTER sound on vinyl compared to CD!

Damn right! Broken is one of THE VERY BEST sounding vinyl lps I have ever heard!

I received the TDS reissue, and here are the differences from the original US (promo) release:

the purple print is lighter in colour on the release (darker on the original)
no catalogue code above the logo on the back
no TVT logo in the upper right corner and no Atlantic logo either
barcode added to the upper right corner
details at the bottom are different

Oh, yeah, and I hear the vinyls are heavier... I guess that counts too...

The catalogue code is on the spine: B0011697-01

The sleeves are flip flopped. The US promo has Disk 1 in the sleeve with the block NIN on the cover and Disk 2 in the sleeve with the feathers. The Lyrics were shuffled around a bit, the spacing changed heresy isn't split into 2 columns anymore, but big man with a gun is.

Also the PA logo is printed on the lower left corner of the cover instead of being an actual sticker on the upper right.

I stand sorely corrected on the differences then...D'oh!

09/29/08 5:44 PM

so do you guy collect vinyl in general or just nine inch nails vinyl ?

09/29/08 9:37 PM

I listen to and collect vinyl...all kinds of music and bands including NIN.

09/29/08 10:56 PM

I collect vinyl in general, although my biggest part of it is NIN.

My small collection is quite miniscule compared to my dad's, who has over 500 vinyls (60s, 70s and 80s mostly), but I'm getting there.

09/30/08 9:02 AM

whats your rarest record ?

09/30/08 10:32 AM

I'd say a toss up between HLAH German 12" and WITT 10"

I don't know what the count is on HLAH but it might close(or even less)... Especially since it came out 19 years earlier.

Well, the test-pressing vinyls are pretty damn rare too, and I have HLAH, Sin and Broken...

Basically, any (and all) of these vinyls are worth between 150 and 250 bucks, and WITT is known to cost 300-400.

09/30/08 11:24 AM

wow the most i ever spent on a record was 80$

Recieved today this TF vinyl, still sealed.
The texture on the back below says: made in EU; 490 473-1 LC06406
But the sticker on the plastic says: ILPST 8091/490 473-1 (which's the UK cat#).
Did anyone ever see this lay-out?
Is it special?
Do I need to keep my other (unsealed) EU version, because now I got this sealed version I was thinking of selling it?
Thnx.

^^^ How secure are you with the seller? I'd guess it's a fake sticker on a re-wrapped vinyl.

It was my first sale with this seller from Paris. He has 100% feedback.
No, it's not re-wrapped. The plastic looks old and a little coloured and has some age-damages. The sticker is also aged.
During the auction the picture showed a sticker on the barcode. Now it's gone and there's a light yellow mark on the plastic.
If it was a fake it would look newer and better for sure.
Well, I have a good feeling about this.

Does anyone have any suggestions on protective sleeves to put vinyls in? I'm looking for something that can fit the entire thing, packaging and all, not just the record itself. any suggestions?
