Third Batman to be Titled The Dark Knight Rises
Source: Hero Complex October 28, 2010

In an interview with Hero Complex, Christopher Nolan revealed that the title for his third Batman movie will be The Dark Knight Rises. He added that the villain "won't be the Riddler."

"We'll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we'll be introducing some new ones," Nolan said cryptically. He also said that the studio has agreed with him not to shoot the film in 3D. but that he'll be experimenting with the scope of IMAX in unprecedented ways.

”We’re looking to do something technologically that’s never been done before," Nolan explained.

The filmmaker also reiterated that The Dark Knight Rises will close out his trilogy.

"Our ambition for the third movie is to complete a story that has begun," he said, "This is not starting over. This not rebooting. We’re finishing something and keeping a consistency with what’s come before has real value.”

The Dark Knight Rises is scheduled for a July 20, 2012 release.

Well, at least the title ensures a porn parody of it.

Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight Rises

Hm... Not sure if I like it yet. I kinda felt like the progression from being called "Batman" to "The Dark Knight" was really cool, like he's evolving beyond a campy superhero. With the third title, it doesn't have that same impact. It's not nearly as badass the second time around.

would've prefered he went with The Dark Knight Returns, but Rises isn't bad either; given where the second act left off, with Batman hunted and on the run, it sets the stage for, if not a triumphant finale (doesn't seem like Nolan's style), than a least a fulfilling one.

i love that "Batman" isn't even in the titles anymore. when i first heard the second movie's title was just "The Dark Knight", i knew, beyond any doubt, that Nolan absolutely got it; and the Batman movie i'd been waiting my whole life to see was being made, and made RIGHT.

anyone have a better idea for a title?

My dark knight rises...

You know, I really don't think you can top The Dark Knight. Honestly, I almost would rather have that be the third movie's title. The second one could be like... Batman... Continues :p

Honestly, I'd have to know the story before suggesting a title. It might be cool to see a title pulled from one of the sagas, like Knight's End.

"The Dark Knight 2" or "The Darker Knight" for the lulz.

My real idea, which I had before Nolan came up with TDKR, is "The Caped Crusader" because it, like the Dark Knight, is another name for Batman.

Looking forward to it. I wonder if the Joker will be in it. Ledger would be hard to replace.

10/28/10 3:58 PM

I know Nolan is saying the Riddler won't be in this, but come on let's face it. This is Chris Nolan we are talking about he could be throwing us throw a loop here and leading us in the wrong direction..
But I'm also really excited about the rumors of Killer Croc being the baddie in part three.

BUUUUUUUUUUT if you want my opinion I think they should incoporate Victor Zsasz into this movie. He was in Begins, and he did escape Arkham at the end and then nothing. Also in the promo material for TDK it seems as Zsasz is still committing crimes and has yet to be captured again. I wouldn't put it past Nolan to use him, even if he is used like the Scarecrow was used in the beginning of TDK.

I liked that they were gonna name it "Gotham".

I'd like to see the Villain be someone like Hush - someone who equals Batman in both physical strength and wits. Hush is pretty down to earth compared to the other villains in the series as well, and especially in Nolan's darker reboot, I think that's important.

10/28/10 7:15 PM

i'm excited to hear that Tom Hardy will be included in the The Dark Knight Rises. i saw him in Inception and thought he was really good. it's still a bit of a mystery as to what character he will play. here's one rumor/theory, Could Tom Hardy Play Det. Harvey Bullock In The Dark Knight Rises?

the buzz this film already has is amazing. i can see the lines of people outside the movie theatres at the opening night midnight screenings already.

I say bring back Arnold Shwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. He was the best Batman villain and Batman and Robin was the best film in the franchise's history.

Before Ledger's death it was rumored that the 3rd would involve The Joker's trial.

However Nolan has stated that he will not include The Joker in the 3rd now as he said he just wouldn't feel right about it.

yeah, that occured to me too, but "Caped Crusader" doesn't really mesh with Nolan's vision of Batman; just a little too comic book-y. that leaves The World's Greatest Detective, or the Darknight Detective, neither of which have that same kind of impact as The Dark Knight.

as for villans, the joker's not coming back; Nolan has stated more than once he has no intention to recast. who could really top Ledger's performance, anyway? it'll have to wait til the next incarnation of Batman.

while i doubt Riddler will make an appearance, it would be great to see the excellent Tom Hardy in some kind of antagonist role.

the safest bet is the introduction of Selina Kyle as a new love interest/foil for Batman. i'd love to see Nolan do something interesting with their complex relationship. and with rachel dawes getting croaked in the last movie, why not?

It was still better than Superman Returns. I would rank all Batman films, in the following order:

Batman Returns-Very underrated
The Dark Knight
Batman Begins
Batman (1989)
Batman Forever
Batman and Robin

no one with a shred of sanity could actually believe Batman & Robin is anything but a steaming pile of neon colored shit.

i actually went and rented it the night before the premiere of Batman Begins, just to remind myself how far the series had fallen.

You know what's funny? While Batman Returns was successful, it still underperformed at the box office. Audiences and critics seemed to not like the film's dark/dour tone. As a response, the next two films, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin were far lighter, more family/child friendly. As a result, the quality of the films greatly declined and the negative response of Batman and Robin prettty much torpedoed the franchise.

And now the two films in the reboot have seen Batman, once again, as a brooding, moody character and the films have been pretty dark. I find it ironic that the series has returned to that mood and feel, given how hard WB tried to lighten Batman up, after the lukewarm response of Batman Returns.

I still say Batman Returns was an outstanding film and the best Batman movie of either the original series or the reboot.

I imagine I'm the only one who would actually like to see Deadshot as the main villain in this. From what I remember in the comics he was first revealed as another crimefighter who then tried to take Batman's place. Of course it was just a ruse and Bataman and Gordon stop him. Considering the ending of the last film I think it could work storywise as the people could place hope in a new hero so to speak, the batman redeems himself in the eyes of gotham by stopping this new threat.

The only problem is that he might not fit in with the more realistic version of Nolan's batman.

I completely agree. And, instead of speculating and quoting everybody's opinions, I'll just subtly agree and offer my title idea(s) for Batman 3:

Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Batman Ascends

My second pick:
Batman: Champion of Gotham

would love to see Harley Quin in the new one; plus, am i the only one who sees this

Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Gotham City

While Tim Burton's Batman movies were huge for our generation, I can't say I feel any particular desire to go back and watch them. The atmosphere and the set designs, with all their Gothic/Art Deco awesomeness, just couldn't cover up the campy-ass attitude with which Burton approached those movies.

I'm not huge into comic books by any stretch of the imagination, but I've always dug Batman's style. I have to paraphrase Stephen King on this one, but what really makes Batman so much better than, say, Superman or the X-Men, is that he doesn't have super powers. He's just a guy who succeeds by the virtue of his intelligence and determination alone. Nolan brought this idea to film, and did a damn good job. Batman Begins and Dark Knight deal with real metaphysical issues, and do so intelligently and without being preachy about it. Burton's films had... well... Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito.

Joel Schumacher's films were just intolerable, in my opinion. All shine and no substance, which is somewhat disappointing given Schumacher's other works.

Anyway, on the issue of the third Nolan films' chief adversary, I'm not sure where they could go from here. I honestly thought they blew their wad on R'as al Ghul, who is, in my opinion, the most complex and compelling of the Batman baddies. Then, they went and surprised the shit out of me with their take on the traditionally-campy Joker. I'm at a loss right now. I don't know who they'll pick (maybe R'as will return, as he's known to do), but I'm pretty sure they'll do it well.

Dark Knight Rises isn't that great of a title. I mean, has the dark knight not already risen?
I wouldn't be surprised if it exists only becasue some Warner Bros. suit said it need to contain 'The Dark Knight" in it. But hey, fuck it the title doesn't even matter, is a Batman movie.

As for The Riddler not being in it, THANK GOD. We need a villain that can match Batman in a phsical way, not some asshole who leaves clues that lead to him being caught

I agree with you that it is underated, For me, the only thing about that movie I don't carer for is the Penguins with rockets attacking the city, but hey, that's Tim Burton for you.

Seriously... he did already rise up and take care of shit. Thus why I think the title sucks..... You are probably right though. I bet Warner Bros. wanted to harvest a little more green from the second highest grossing film of all time. So why not keep The Dark Knight in the new title? lmao, this is a damn joke....
