I recently watched a couple movies, first one being Ken Russell's 1971 highly controversial film
The Devils. I bought this on Amazon a while back and finally found the right time to view this feature and the waiting was well worth it. This film is extremism at it's finest. There's not even one particular area or scene that is more intense than the other, cause the film as a whole is just out of this world. When this film premiered in 1971, it sent shockwaves throughout the industry for its content and was heavily edited and cut to please the average viewer. Even against todays standards, this film goes to far ends to shock the hell out of you; literally. Luckily, after a petition went out years ago, Ken Russell was able to restore the full uncut version for a DVD release. Coincidentally, this film came out the same year as Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, and we all know how crazy that film is, but I find this feature to stand right up there with it, if not more than A Clockwork Orange along the lines of Extremism/Shock Value. And just like Kubrick's film, this feature is far from being dated, even with the grainy restoration sequences, the story, the characters and performances really hold you onto the end. After watching it, it's one of those ones you need time to adjust and digest whatever it is you just witnessed. I really wonder why this film isn't discussed more often or recognized for it's powerful nature. I don't know how or where Ken Russell comes up with his ideas and visions for his films, but he can take things pretty far and this one sure is a "No-Holds Bar" feast for the eyes. So I suggest that if you watch this film, watch with caution and not on a full stomach
And I also caught Gaspar Noe's
Enter The Void for the second time...it's just a wild existential/spiritual experience and is just as great as the first viewing. Normally if I REALLY love a film like this, I try not to watch it too many times to savor that feeling, but I couldn't resist with Enter The Void...it's just one of those movies. I can't wait for this to be released on DVD in January for an Uncut version.
