PROMETHEUS
I am the biggest movie buff and fan of movies that I have met, personally. I'm not trying to brag, I don't really care what anyone thinks. I just know that out of all the numbers of people I know, nobody is into movies as much as I am.
That said, I switched what I thought was the 'greatest movie ever' for me personally, several times. Finally over the years, and being a fan of sci-fi more than any other genre, I came to the conclusion that The Matrix was my favorite film of all time.
Prometheus surpassed the Matrix. For me. In fact, I put this on my fb page:
"For anyone my age... For anyone of any age for that matter...
Prometheus is 'The Matrix' of our time. It is groundbreaking, on every level. If you want to know more, or to to argue with me about this, please do so, please contact me."
I give Prometheus 15/10. Not only are the visuals completely amazing, but the storyline and plot is so well done, and leaves JUST enough of small holes and/or mystery and intrigue that it leaves the true fans (me and maybe 2 people I know! jk.. but seriously, there are so few of u) with the aggressive and awe-inspiring feeling that an alien/action movie of this caliber SHOULD have. Exactly the thing that hollywood and movies in general have lacked in the last, oh I don't know, four to six years. Hell, the last eight years.
First and foremost, the one thing I've seen in all the hundreds upon hundreds of horrible critic reviews of Prometheus is that it's lacking in plot. It is definitely not lacking in plot - general audiences and general sci-fi fans are just too fucking stupid to understand what is going on and all of the small themes and undertones that Prometheus is (proudly) pushing forth with, and not only do they hang higher than the 'great visuals' in the movie, but they drive this movie to the top of the list of modern day epic films. That being said, the visuals ARE fantastic, and really ARE a great part of why this movie stood out far better than any other flick of its kind. If I'm not making sense at this point, please quit reading.
Second of all, I can't understand how this great plot IS being misunderstood. I get that people are too dumb to figure out that it's not a direct prequel (even though Sir Ridley Scott and several others have said that a thousand times anyways) but let me give everyone who is still lost a complete and utter mindfuck: THIS MOVIE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING ABOUT WHERE ALIENS CAME FROM and doesn't ever once tell you exactly why. Which I LOVE, by the way. Let me explain in only one sentence. The Xenomorph wasn't a planned organism. THE END! Whoa MAN! Like OMG like whoa! Seriously though, people want this movie to be the answer to the original Alien films. It's not. It's an incredible standalone film, that in fact does completely relate to the first films, but it is loosely based in the series. It's not a how to/where from of any kind, this is not the prequel manual for the original Alien, and it definitely is underrated in a thousand ways.
If all of this doesn't answer your profound confusion or questions with the film, then why are you seeing it anyways? And furthermore, why do you need answers for a great alien flick to be great?
Third and lastly, (I could go on...) I will end with this - just because the movie is scary as shit and has the creepy and dark vibe that it does (which is absolutely perfect for the setting and brilliant for the genre, might I add) doesn't make it a "horror" film. In fact, I love the horror in this movie more than any horror film I've ever seen before, and I still don't relate horror to this movie in any way. It's scary because we're seeing incredibly dark things happening and you're seeing the beginnings of a really dark story. There is no need for kind-hearted souls on a journey of this nature, which is why the crew is 'fuck-all' and in it for themselves, mostly. We don't need sappy love stories and small-talk or better dialogue to realize that over half of the crew sent to this forbidden planet are there for money, not for fun. And the ones who ARE there for a better purpose, who are there to find answers and are actually in the mission to seek out these profound things, are amazing characters. Just because we don't have much backstory for characters doesn't make the characters any less likeable. I can't understand movie critics these days.
I'm going to end now because there are so many good things to be said about Prometheus but nobody will hear them out without first closing their two eyes and opening their third. I don't know how or why this movie is being written off as another 'cgi masterpiece with zero plotline' but that seems to be all I read online when I look up anything cool about this monolithic film.
