List here your all time Top 5 actors - either from TV, the Big Screen or the Stage. Why do you love them & what are the standout shows or movies of theirs you have enjoyed the most.

01/14/10 12:42 PM

1 - Robert Downey Jnr: especially in Less Than Zero. An '80's movie that actually had substance & showcased his incredible talent - it was rumoured to also be semi-autobiographical.

2 - Al Pacino: Wow, so many of his movies are amazing but I would have to say Scarface & The Godfather are my all time favourites. Pacino's intensity is staggering to watch.

3 - Johnny Depp: Again there are SO many of his movies that are brilliant. But I have always gone for the quirkier roles he's had like in Benny & Joon or What's Eating Gilbert Grape? I love his comedic timing & also the undercurrent of vulnerability he can portray too.

4 - Andy Garcia: Internal Affairs, for me was his best role ever. Red hot Latino. Just looking at his eyes makes me go weak at the knees!

5 - Sam Worthington: My favourite Aussie. I know he is only "new" on the Hollywood scene, but he has been kicking around Australian cinema for over 10 years & he is one of the most versatile actors ever. There are 2 of his movies that I love, love, love. The first is Gettin' Square & the second is MacBeth. He is going to be huge - I'm sure the wonderful Avatar has pretty much already attested to that smiling smiley

01/14/10 12:47 PM

Robert Deniro... A true master.
John Travolta... Capable of great brilliance, even if he doesn't always do great films. I "grew up" watching his work and it inspired me.
Al Pacino... Again, a true master.
Bill Murray... Just love his stuff, even the serious ones, like "The Razor's Edge". I dig his style and timing and wit.
Roy Schieder... Again, grew up watching his films and his performances always resonated with me. "All That Jazz", "Jaws", "Sorcerer", et al.
Honorable mention to...
Richard Pryor and Denis Leary.
Pryor's best "acting" was, i believe, 1978's "Blue Collar".
I've dug Leary since "No Cure For Cancer", and find his work on "Rescue Me" brilliant.

My bad sir... I never should've forgotton Robert Downey Jr. THAT guy is freakin' GIFTED. A genius.

01/14/10 1:03 PM

LOL, No worries Joe, all is forgiven smiling smiley But I agree with you also on Travolta (magic) & Bill Murray - that guy is amazing.

01/14/10 1:44 PM

1.) Jack Nicholson
2.) Robert Deniro
3.) Chevy Chase (I just have a thing for the vacation movies)
4.) Johnny Depp
5.) Robin Williams

I guess for me its a mix between serious and goofy smiling smiley. But I like Robin Williams in What Dreams May Come which is also serious.

01/14/10 1:48 PM

1. Anthony Hopkins because he's another intense and sexy blue-eyed Welshman like Richard Burton. There's just so much depth to his performances. I was a fan 20 years before Silence of the Lambs after seeing him in a made-for-tv remake of Dark Victory with Elizabeth Montgomery (Samantha on Bewitched for you youngsters).

2. Johnny Depp has had such amazing career and I've loved almost all his movies.

3. Robert DeNiro because he branched out into comedy and I didn't even recognize him in Brazil.

4. Christian Bale because he made me understand immediately that American Psycho was a comedy.

5. Tie: Gregory Peck for To Kill A Mockingbird and Burt Lancaster for The Rainmaker.

Can I do a dead and living list?

Dead

1. Charles Chaplin - Where do I begin, a true genius to cinema, changed the face of motion pictures and probably their first established superstar.

2. Cary Grant - The quintessential leading man tall dark handsome and bloody funny.

3. Paul Newman - A stunning work of art in both acting and physical appearance.

4. Alec Guinness - A wonderful character actor I think Kind Hearts and Coronet really showcases his talents.

5. James Stewart - "Merry Christmas, movie house! Merry Christmas, Emporium! Merry Christmas, you wonderful old Building and Loan!"

Living

1. Al Pacino - I don't know why but I've always enjoyed his performances more than De Niro, but I do think De Niro is a great actor aswell.

2. Robert Downey Jr - It's Robert Downey Jr what more do you want!

3. Michael Sheen - A very talented actor, can transform himself into any part he plays.

4. Christopher Eccleston - Brings alot of intensity to his roles and I'm glad he's broken into hollywood as I think he is bigger than people give him credit.

5.Johnny Depp - Eye Candy he may be, but he is a brilliant actor!

5.

01/14/10 7:03 PM

In no particular order:

Tom Hanks
Bill Murray
Jack Nicholson
Cary Grant
James Stewart

01/14/10 9:30 PM

Clancy Brown: Yep, the Kurgan from the Highlander. Way underrated.

Morgan Freeman: He's freakin GOD.

Johnny Depp: from What's Eating Gilbert Grape to the Pirates of the Caribbean...he's doing something right. And he's not rough on the eyes, either.

Robert DeNiro: badass. period.

Tom Hanks: I love almost every movie he's acted in.

01/15/10 2:18 AM

2. Daniel Day-Lewis - mostly for his spectacular performance in There Will Be Blood, but he's fantastic in anything.

3. Edward Norton - Fight Club is my favourite movie, but he's so great in anything, from American History X to The Illusionist.

4. Brad Pitt - He's also great in Fight Club, but he gives a good performance in whatever movie he's in. Inglourious Basterds, Seven, Kalifornia, Snatch, etc.

01/19/10 10:46 AM

Men
1. Alan Rickman, always and forever
2. Malcolm McDowell
3. Ralph Finnes
4. Johnny Depp
5. Harrison Ford

Women
1. Cate Blanchett
2. Kate Winslet
3. Natalie Portman
4. Jane Lynch
5. Elizabeth Taylor

01/19/10 1:00 PM

Men
Gary Oldmen
John Malkovich
Willem Dafoe
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Alfred Molina

Women
Meryl Streep
Jodie Foster
Angela Bassett
Frances McDormand
Anne Hathaway ( she shows promise but I haven't seen enough of her yet)

The women are very hard because a lot of actresses get work because they are eye candy or who they no and who they blow. I look for range and acting ability popularity and that bullshit lends itself to the "Here today and gone today" syndrome

With honorable mentions to Don Cheadle, Eric Stoltz, Daniel Day Lewis, Dustin Hoffman, and Johnny Depp for his range. We all know Pacino and De Niro are amazing. If you're a Pacino fan I urge to check out his 70's films Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, Cruising (if you can find it) & And Justice For All.

I guess I have to slit it up between "The Greatest" and "Personal Favorite:"

Greatest:

1. Daniel Day Lewis - The greatest "Character" actor of all time, I've never watched a film with him and recognized him since he literally transforms into his character's.
2. Marlon Brando - No need to deliberate, the man is a Genius!
3. Paul Newman - Cool Hand Luke (Nuff Said!)
4. Philip Seymour Hoffman - He has had such a great line of work behind him and continues to shine...
5. Robert DeNiro - Raging Bull proves he's a fucking wrecking ball!

Personal Favorite:

1. Johnny Depp - I like that he's always chosen roles that he's interested in and not what Hollywood would expect.
2. Jack Nicholson - I'm a One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest fiend and his portrayal in The Shining is sheer brilliance. He's the man!
3. Jeremy Irons - Very Under-rated, but his performances always blow me away, acting seems so easy for him. Deadringers and M Butterfly are beyond great
4. Dustin Hoffman - It's weird how he's this goofy little guy, but is able to really dig deep into his performances, especially in Midnight Cowboy, Straw Dogs, and Marathon Man, shit there's too many...
5. Sean Penn - Who would've thought Spicoli would turn out like he is now and days, just a force on the screen.
