comics, graphic novels, wizard magazine, etc.

I'm going through sort of a graphic novel obsessive freak out right now. During the release of TDK I read every Batman graphic novel I could get my hands on: Arkham Asylum, TDK Returns, TDK Strikes Again, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory. Everything.

I've also been rereading a lot of Alan Moore's stuff. V for Vendetta, Watchmen, From Hell, Lost Girls. All that stuff. My favorite of his is definitely From Hell. The complexity in it is really astounding. I wish the film version went the route of focusing on the killer more rather than Abberline, turning the film into a Johnny Depp vehicle.

I can understand how Moore would be upset with Hollywood but at the same time I do think alot of the adaptations of his work have their merits. In fact, I thought V for Vendetta was a damn fine adaptation.

Let's hope Watchmen is good.

Big comic book junkie, right here.

I mostly read DC and its sub-divisions (Vertigo, Wildstorm, etc). Trinity, Green Arrow/Black Canary, Final Crisis, Birds of Prey, The Authority, Midnighter, Fell, and pretty much all Batman-related series are some of my favorite titles/what I've been reading lately.

As far as favorite writers go, I love nearly everything that I've read by Grant Morrison. His stuff is just so creative, and usually pretty nuts, which is why I love it. Barring his current run on Batman (Batman: R.I.P.) which has been absolute shit, nothing he's done has ever been bad, at least I don't think so. We3, The Invisibles, and The Filth are my favorites of his work.

Warren Ellis is another one of my favorite writers. If you've read Transmetropolitan, you'll know why I love him so much. That series = fucking genius. The Authority is also extremely good, one of my favorite comic titles. He's currently writing a series called Fell, with Ben Templesmith (who did Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse, which is awesome), and it's pretty good.

DC just put out a new printing of Robin: Year One which is AWESOME. Great Mad Hatter story right there.

I really need to get into comic books more than I already am. I'm re-reading Watchmen for the 3rd time, going back and seeing things I missed and making connections I didn't see at first. Love it.

I'm going to this convention, Dragon Con, in about two weeks, and plan on buying lots of comic books.

I've always loved how Templesmith incorporates music into his work. He's done something similar with Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse. Welcome to Hoxford sounds pretty interesting. I'll definitely be checking it out.

Definitely check out Preacher too. Also, his Punisher MAX run.

08/16/08 7:32 PM

I second the Preacher recommendation. Some great stuff, right there.

08/17/08 12:01 AM

preacher is absolutely brilliant as is boys.

couple of interesting things for youse:
there is talks of the boys being made into a movie

there is talks of preacher being made into an HBO series. each issue is said to be an hour long episode. (that's issue, not trade!)

I fell in love with Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, and I enjoyed Batman: The Killing Joke.

08/18/08 10:47 PM

Finished "Watchmen" in 2 days, and "The Long Halloween" in a day. Thoroughly enjoyed both, moreso "Watchmen", and I'm on a hunt to find more graphic novels like those. I've made a list out of the DC titles I've seen so far I'm interested in...

Arkham Asylum
Batman: Dark Victory
Wanted
Tales of the Multiverse: Batman - Vampire
Batman: Year 100
Superman & Batman: World's Funnest
Superman: Speeding Bullets

Also, I heard Marvel has reissued the AWESOME "The Punisher kills the Marvel Universe" one-shot. I'm looking to pick that up too.

Currently reading Tank girl!
Classic stuff!

You need to read Batman: Year One & The Dark Knight Returns if you haven't already. Also, grab the current Batman graphic novels by Paul Dini because they are superb.

08/19/08 2:14 AM

Yeah, I'm grabbing Dark Victory since it's a sequel of sorts to the Long Halloween. I've also considered Frank Miller's work on Batman, but the style of artwork isn't exactly what I like. But I'll give it a second chance, I guess.

What are the current Batman graphic novels by Dini? I try to stay away from those that are published in volumes, and just stick to the collections/graphic novels that are complete in one book.

Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul. I know there's more, but it's the only one I could think of off the top of my head.

Also, if you're looking into Miller's Batman work, check out All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, for humorous purposes. And of course The Dark Knight Returns.

I love David Mack's Kabuki (no surprise), The art work is amazing and the story is a model to inspire the reader to make changes in their life to male it better, it sounds strange and dorky but i love it. i also loved mack's work on daredevil.
Wolverine origins, the original series and the new one, I love old school x-men, the early 90's jim lee stuff.
Speaking of Jim Lee i Loved Hush.
Bone, I read it at work, its so long but so funny.

Love JHTM, the Squee stuffs, and the 'I Feel Sick' series that kind of ties in to it all.

I'm still baffled that Nickelodeon picked Vasquez to make Zim as a *children's* show. I mean...it's good, dark and warped and twisted, like I like my humor grinning smiley but...it's so not a kids' show. IMO, anyway.

They're collected volumes of single issues stories that Dini wrote and were drawn by various artists. Their names are Batman: Detective, Batman: Death & The City, and the upcoming Batman: Private Casebook. All good stories, especially the casebook that's coming out in December.

I second this. ASBAR is hilarious.

Right now I'm working on Final Crisis, JSA, and Transmetropolitan, and I intend to catch up on Secret Invasion next. I've always been more of a DC and Vertigo fan, and just as I started getting into Marvel, the whole Brand New Day fiasco really put me off. Any recs on that end would be welcome, though.

08/21/08 11:28 PM

Fuck One More Day and Brand New Day. I'm almost getting to that point with Secret Invasion because Final Crisis has had more things happen in three issues than Secret Invasion has had in five. Also, fuck Civil War and fuck World War Hulk.

If you want to read GOOD Marvel comics, read Ed Brubaker's Captain America series. The easy jumping-on point would be The Death of Captain America, but it'd be better to start at the beginning with Captain America: Winter Soldier. Also, check out New Avengers by Brian Michael Bendis & Iron Man: Extremis by Warren Ellis.

Damn straight. I don't know what ad wizards thought up One More Day and moreover, why it needed to be hyped that much.

On another note, I've just finished the 2nd trade volume of DMZ and I'm loving it. Very Year Zero-ish in its story of a possible future U.S..
