I was (still am) a huge fan of Clive Barker. I haven't seen that he has put out anything new in quite some time. However, if you've ONLY ever seen 'Hellraiser' that is just a TOUCH of what his genius is. I strongly suggest 'The Great and Secret Show' 'Weaveworld' and 'The Damnation Game'

I met him at a horror con years ago. Nice guy!

10/03/08 5:18 PM

I met Clive twice in my life so far, and got his autograph on three of his books: Cabal, The Great & Secret Show, and Everville. I'm hoping to see him one more time, one of these days, so he can sign my deluxe copy of Imajica. He is a nice guy, just as you said, and the man whom Stephen King himself once declared "the future of horror".

10/03/08 6:45 PM

I saw him on a Halloween top 100 best horror movie countdown about 2 years ago.
The years have not been kind to him!

He signed my Books of Blood graphic novels and my first edition printing of Great and Secret show. I'm gonna have to Google him; I really want to know what he's up to! If I find any new info, I'll post it here if anyone's interested.

UPDATE: Yeah, wikipedia has current info on him.

never liked harry potter.

10/03/08 9:08 PM

imajica = sex in a book
cabal = ugh, fucking amazing
hellbound heart = need i say anything?
the great and secret show, everville = dirtiest fucking book i have ever read
abarat = fucking brilliant
oh man clive barker is THE FUCKING SHIT.

10/03/08 9:22 PM

i've heard of this man...
winking smiley

10/03/08 9:59 PM

The great and secret show is one of my most treasured books, i read it when I was 12 and loved every word and the imagery his words created.

10/04/08 8:22 AM

Hopefully I'll get to see this in the States.
It's one of my favorite stories. That and Cabal...

10/04/08 12:25 PM

One of my fav all time books is Weaveworld... I've lost count how many times I've read it. I've got all his books, it's like seeing old friends when i re-read them smiling smiley

10/05/08 7:27 PM

Love his work, though I have to admit I found Mister B Gonne to be a bit of a let-down. Hopefully he'll return to form with The Scarlet Gospels, or Abarat3, whichever comes first.

10/09/08 12:13 PM

I really liked Cold Heart Canyon. More of a throw back to the books of blood. Everville brought me back to his writing though after a bit of a break.

10/09/08 12:23 PM

I'm listening to the audio book Mister B. Gone, I will be getting the book very very soon I am loving it.

10/10/08 1:31 PM

Books of Blood are awesome
Cabal is awesome too, but the move (Night Breed) sucked ass.

I need to get around to reading the rest...

10/14/08 5:19 PM

Hmmm... I have to disagree... though I find the artwork in Abarat really fantastic, I find the story itself a little too forced. Its not gelling with me so far. I don't hate it... but I don't love it either.

Imajica is by far the best... fucking EPIC! I would put Weaveworld as second with the Books of the Art a close third... speaking of third, when is he going to flipping finish the third book of the Art?!?!?!?!

DITTO. well, i was maybe 17-18. although i was experimenting much with LSD and Pychedelics when i first read this, and it had amazing similraities with the psychedelic realm. visually pleasing. still my favorite book of all time.

and yeah, Everville was some great eye candy, if i remember correctly. shit, i need to read these again.

'Books of Blood' = just some real great gore.

i've been trying to get through "The Damnation Game" for years now. interesting, but doesn't seem to hold my attention for some reason.

10/23/08 6:28 AM

I am in love with the "Books Of Blood" atm, and Hellbound heart which I just read for the 20th time. smiling smiley

Clive is my favorite... and how can you NOT love the man who came up with "Stale incense old sweat and lies" if you're a NIN a fan?

Heh... I recommended the book to a friend and she had to put it down towards the end saying it was too sick. I hadn't read it in a while and I was confused as to which part she was referring to... then I remembered the scene in Mexico.

Have you started on book 2 yet? Book 1 is admittedly mediocre on its own, but if the rest of the series continues like book 2, then it's worth reading.

Oh yeah, if you guys liked the books of blood, you'll probably want to watch this

(there's also a trailer for Dread floating around, but it keeps getting taken down everywhere for some reason)

Really??? Over the book? That's awesome. I love good breakup stories.

Love Barker, I read the Books Of Blood/ In the Flesh when I was 13 or so and have read everything of his ever since except for Arabat, Not that I don't like it for being aimed at the young adult market, (I enjoyed Thief of Always) I didn't enjoy what I did read of it enough to want to continue. As for his newer stuff, I'm happy I loved Coldheart Canyon and Mr. B Gone (which I thought was a comedy and hi-fucking-llarious)... but my favorites are probably the Great and Secret Show /Everville and the Imajica set... But really not a bad book in the bunch. Although, that being said, he does have some problems with endings it seems in his 'one-off' novels; Damnation Game, Weaveworld, Galilee, etc.

@VigilX... WTF is that shit? And is that a remix of "Everything in its Right Place" running behind the trailer?

11/14/08 8:27 PM

The only thing I've ever read by Barker is Abarat. My favorite favorite book. I've never read the sequel [Days of Magic, Nights of War], though, because my decided that Barker's stuff isn't the kind of stuff I should be filling my head with, and then proceeded to take away Abarat, which made me very sad. But, anyway, I LOVE THAT BOOK. yeah.

I thought you said you read everything of his...

It's the film adaptation of The Book Of Blood (as well as the post script featured in some editions of the book). It's following the recent adaptation of The Midnight Meat Train and will be followed by film adaptations of Dread, Pig Blood Blues and the Madonnas.

And yeah, that's apparently the Paul Oakenfold remix of Everything in its right place (didn't even know he remixed that song 'til I saw the trailer).

Too bad... it's a WAY better than the first book and the third should be out by the end of next year.

I understand what the books of blood are, I'm just sure the 'film version' will be a sickly little travesty, just like TMMT and Rawhead Rex and ALL the Hellraiser sequels... If Barker is not directing and writing the script there is a 99.6% failure rate going... so I'm sure it will suuuuuck.

I've had to lower my standard a bit to appreciate films like MMT, but to be fair, the entire horror genre is pretty stupid in film. I pretty much stopped watching films in that genre except for Barker adaptations since I loved the books so much.

I still look forward to seeing these films knowing they'll have problems since what they're missing can be filled in with my knowledge from reading the books. I can count on the plot, the themes and the characterization being weak, but if I can just get a few glimpses of what the book was trying to show, it'll still be worth the trip.

I think his short stories would be a lot better if they were adapted into art-house films with some dark material (i.e., like Mulholland Drive, Cache etc.) rather than trying to make them horror films.

I agree, and actually as silly as it sounds, I like the graphic novels they've put out more than most the films.

I have a copy of "the Forbidden / Salome" that was released a long time ago... shorts he made in college, quite good in an experimental Kenneth Anger or Lynch sort of way.

I've finished Tapping the Vein and I'm still getting through The Great and Secret Show graphic novel. So far, it seems to be on about the same level as his film adaptations, but like I said, I can still enjoy it anyway.

Yeah I have that too: not really a fan. I like surrealist work when there's a stronger structure (i.e., it doesn't feel completely random and/or it's not so esoteric that I stand a chance at understanding some of it), but those films are a little too similar to the kind of student films parodied in pop culture (although I don't like how Lynch and Renais are thrown in the same category at the end of that entry).

11/16/08 11:57 AM

I've actually only read the "Hellraiser" Graphic novels, and "Tapping the Vein" but I did enjoy them, especially some of the artwork in them.

As for The Forbidden, I like it on an ambitious level, the special effects of the skinning in Forbidden are remarkable for some college kids with little money, especially for back in the 70's. Also I thought the Forbidden guided him directly into the Hellraiser film as you can see countless shots (and images in general) that seem to be direct evolutions of those seen in The Forbidden.

One of my favorite examples of the student art-house mockery is in Ghost World, the art teacher's film "Father - Mirror"... I saw a lot of things like that during film school.

Yes, Last Year at Marienbad is a brilliant film and they should be ashamed they tried to lump Renais in there, Fando & Lis pretty much belongs there, but thankfully they didn't say Holy Mountain or El Topo. I'd say EVERY movie Warhol ever made belongs on that list though.

I read TGASH and Everville. Everville is pretty explicit, but I thought everything fit into the world that Barker created, so it didn't come off as gratuitous. But maybe I'm a little warped. Anyway, I'll probably re-read Everville at some point because I have a nagging feeling that I didn't completely retain some of the philosophical parts. Gotta check out Imajica, too. Really interesting and imaginative author - never read anything quite like his work.

11/26/08 9:46 PM

Love this man. Anyone ever seen his sculptures / art pieces? Such a talent. The Great and Secret Show is probably my favorite, though Everville and Weaveworld and Imajica are very close behind. Love that he introduced me to the idea of quidity...
There is so much of his work that I haven't read - this thread reminds me that I need to go to the book depository...
