My favorite novel, I have read it easily a dozen times... Anymore Anna Karenina readers?

Certainly, can't say I've read it more than once, but I do agree, it is a fantastic novel.

AK is one of my favorite novels. I'd say it's a tie with that and DQ.

Yes, though. ... Levin is one of my favorite characters.

I remember Dostoevski ran outside after finishing it screaming how it's the best book ever written. And I can see why. The last sentence is probably the best last sentence ever written. So inspiring.

(well... the last half - gee, that's a long sentence!)

... "but from now on my life, my whole life, no matter what happens to me, every second of it, is not only not meaningless as it was before, but it has the incontestable meaning of the goodness I have the power to put into it!"

... yeah, that floored me.

Good thread! Read it this summer and so enjoyed it. Until reading it, thought it was only about Anna. Didn't realize it was also the tale of Levin.
Must admit, although I found Anna a sympathetic character in the beginning I didn't once she made that big decision. (oddly afraid of giving away a plot spoiler for those that have not read it yet) She knew what would happen and how society would treat her - so why did she feel so sorry for herself?
I truly loved Levin. A good man.

Were you more sympathetic to Anna?

hulk hogan's wife is like, what's up with that bitch? hah!

no, but one has to concede how great it is that a woman has the freedom to have sex with whoever she wants - no matter age, social stigma BS or whatever.

one may find a feminine taste as base or whatnot, but by virtue of truth, it's only appropriate that freedom is given so that we can see what we - human beings - really desire, deep down.

you go girl!

in short, we like to get freaky, and it's fucking excellent to have the freedom to express that - unlike anna's time, where her desires were forced inward.

so, yes ... i'm extremely sympathetic to her, and many other female characters in old literature. it's sad.

I've always wanted to read this book but I didn't know if it would keep my attention... What's it about? I know nothing about it but have heard of how great it is.

suge,

AK is mostly centered on two characters, her, and Levin, based on the author. Both characters go through ups and downs in regard to wanting love and being disappointed. It's tragic in a way, but also very beautiful in a way - different fates for the two characters. there is some great nature stuff with the levin character and great love stuff with AK. there are also some awesome side characters, but the main story centers around those two.

however, there are seriously some extremely fucking boring parts in this book, more toward the end. like some politics shite. it's nearly unbearable. but it's a great read.

i highly recommend it, and maybe it will lead you to dostoevsky, who is also a great writer.

My library has two copies of it. I'm interested in reading it, but the thickness is somewhat intimidating to me...

I started it several months ago. I still haven't been able to finish it. After I got halfway throguh it, I decided I needed a break and read Dr Zhivago by Boris Pasternak, another Russian author. I finished that one.

Would "volume" be a better word?

I finally finished it last week
...3 months after I started it.

it seems one of my dreams is coming true - AK is coming to the silver screen. i read on rottentomatoes that the director of atonement and pride & prejudice is directing, which seems PERFECT. his favorite actress keira knightly is playing anna and jude law is playing her stiff husband. as far as the other parts, i'm not familiar with the actors.

it's going to be awesome!!!
