I just died a little inside.

For me I'd go with Dan Brown. His books are highly entertaining, but they're total swill. I kind of have this bad feeling that The Solomon Key is going to be a huge letdown, now that he has to write a book knowing up front that millions will read it.

I'm really not sure if this one is sarcasm...

It's not. I don't think he's bad, I quite like some of his stuff, but I don't think he's some kind of comic-book messiah.

Aah xD. I do love his stuff, but I wouldn't call anyone a messiah. As for all those fans who stalk him at cons and whatnot, that really is just stupid.

03/03/09 4:57 PM

Okay, not an author, just one of his books. Jules Vernes Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea. It could have been a great book, if every so often you didn't have to wade through page, after page, after page of marine biology lists. I understand he wanted to make it obvious he'd done research, to give the whole thing credibility, but he waaaaaay overdoes it.

And the ending is crap, far too sudden. It's as if he got bored and couldn't think of a proper ending, so just went, 'Ah, this'll do!'

Avoid.

03/04/09 8:10 PM

Fucking AVI. I hated every goddamned word he ever wrote.

I shall never in my life forgive any of my middle school literature teachers for making me read that shit

03/05/09 8:31 PM

Don't care if it has been said, but Dean Koontz. His books are so fucking formulaic you don't even need to read the cover to know what it involves. We all know there will be someone who is underjudged, bbut turns out to be some unassuming hero, with a dog, either a golden retriever, or a lab of some sorts. Its retarded how many people still buy his crap...

03/06/09 7:49 PM

Richard Laymon. I don't have a fucking clue why this guy is so revered as a horror writer. His stories are generic with poorly written, stupid characters.

03/22/09 6:46 PM

I hate John Le Carré's writing. Not only is he a sexist pig...he's also a racist.
His books are really boring too.

03/26/09 3:20 AM

Ian McEwan.

03/30/09 11:23 PM

Steven King (Yes, I said it, please don't kill me)
JK Rowling

Taste is a funny thing; these are two of my favourite authors!

I suppose it's easy for someone like King to be deemed "over-rated" just because of the amount of success he's had, however, he's my all-time favourite author, so I have to disagree winking smiley

Agreed on Rowling though, I actually think the Harry Potter books are unreadable.

You forgot J G Ballard. A consistantly great writer.

Not heard of this guy.

Interesting how polarizing King is.

I think that while he does have some very interesting books out, he puts out some absolute turds as well, and its not because he is under contract, and its not because needs money and its not even that he is trying something new.

It just seems like occasionally, he like to write and release turds.

Oh, and for however many people are saying Meyer is overrated, I have never, EVER heard anyone say she is good in the first place. Perhaps my moron filter is working better than I thought.

04/01/09 6:31 AM

Laurell K. Hamilton.

The Anita Blake series started going downhill after Obsidian Butterfly and that Fairy series pretty much had nowhere else to go but south (pun very much intended).

04/03/09 12:39 PM

Dean Koontz - and to answer whoever said they weren't sure why his work was so boring: He uses the same plot outline for every book (or at least he used to. After I figured this out I quit reading...)

04/03/09 12:45 PM

Stephanie Meyer.

I really can't stand Twilight.

04/03/09 1:51 PM

Stephen King...

V.C. Andrews too... Her ghost writer sucks. I read all the books (I have no idea why, they are only mildly entertaining) and it seems like the same thing over and over again. I guess I'm waiting for something new to happen... And it never does. Andrews' books were awesome when she was still alive writing them but I think her ghost writer needs to be fired.

also Phillip Pullman

I read all three of those damned compass books thinking that surely they'd get good somewhere, but nope.

04/03/09 4:11 PM

^ I second that.

Sorry Soldier - I guess I should read the entire thread before I post the same thing someone else says!

Sherrilyn Kenyon. Not that her books don't have their place, but I think she regularly hits the bestseller lists. Why is this?

None of these authors are particularly bad, and I enjoy at least one book by each of them, but they're all over-rated. It's like asking someone who their favorite director is, and there's always a 50/50 chance they'll say Tim Burton or Stanley Kubrick.
Neil Gaiman really is overrrated. My dog can write better than him. I bought his book The Anansi Boys. I couldn't even finish it. I found it so boring. It put me to sleep. Maybe it's cuz I'm used to Tolkien & Terry Brooks. No one else really compares to them. Even Stephenie Meyer writes better than Neil Gaiman.

07/21/09 2:26 PM

Neil Gaiman sucks. I really don't care for his writing at all.
I like Stephen Hawking.

Sure Harry Potter is a huge phenomenon, but that doesn't mean the books are bad.

The Half-Blood Prince & The Deathly Hallows are 2 of the greatest books ever written!
So many plot hooks and twists, very VERY entertaining!

Stephen King isn't boring. He just repeats himself endlessly and uses way too much profanity for my liking. Every paragraph has to have a curse word. It kinda gets on my nerves. And I think It could've been done in less than 250 pages if he had just stopped rehashing things.

People who don't understand their work usually tend to call Gaiman and/or Palahniuk overrated :] Won't even start about Alan Moore.

Dan Brown's books are utterly shite. I've read three of them, Da Vinci's Code, Angels something and Digital something, and I think he actually uses some kind of a generator for this stuff. He just changes character names, country, the reason why the whole fucking world is going to end, and that's it.

J. K. Rowling is also overrated, but not that bad. Even though everytime I read her books again, they're less entertaining and their certain parts are more pissing me off.

I used to think Neil Gaiman was the best thing since sliced bread. But my boss, my coworkers, my hairdresser and my brothers and sisters have never even heard of him. If I ever went to a signing, then I would have nothing to brag about. No one would care. In The Graveyward Book, he seems to BORROW HEAVILY from Dan Brown and Stephen King. The result is a mediocre novel thatlacks originality. He also seems to poke fun at JK Rowling, which I found rather uncool and catty. He must be jealous of her success or something.

07/27/09 10:03 AM

The Graveyard Book reminds me of that movie where the little boy sees dead people. What was it called again? Oh yeah...The Sixth Sense. It's been done like a million times in the past 10 years. Not very original. You got that right.

07/27/09 10:09 AM

I read the graveyard book too-- when it was called Pet Sematary

07/27/09 5:18 PM

I'm not a fan of Nora Roberts, probably because I grew up reading Stephen King.
Whenever I read Nora Roberts, I always feel like I'm wasting my time.
I could've been reading someone else instead, like Stephen King or J.K Rowling.
