I highly recommend John Brunner - The sheep look up

Written more than 30 years ago, John Brunner had a very good vision of the world of today. Very great book.

I went looking at Borders and had to order it in. Though in the meantine I got The Dramaturges Of Yan, Web Of Everywhere, and The Stone that Never Came Down by Brunner to read.

I'm bad & always forget to read back in here. John Brunner is my uncle! grinning smiley No, no, sorry, not the author, but it's funny to me. Also, there is an Entertainment Weekly writer with my father's name.

Anywho, gonna settle into bed in a few to read:

Yeah, I don't disagree so far. I like how she appears to write in a way that shows respect for the topic even though she doesn't believe. It's fascinating stuff. smiling smiley

Digital Fortress- Dan Brown.

Good book apart from his over use of exclamation marks.

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. Imaginative, cinematic reboot of the Odysseus myth.

Well, I'm past half way & although I'm only moderately familiar with Austen, it seems to be a fairly faithful adaptation...just, with more violence!
My problem is, although I thought books like her's were well written, I just can't stand most of the characters.
If you like Austen & want lulz: Recommended.
If you like zombies: Recommended!

& a vampire/werewolves series would be very awesome indeed.

19 pages into Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk.
So far its pretty interesting to say the least. I loved Choke, Fight Club and Invisible Monsters, hope I love this one too!

Survivor and Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. Hell, anything written by him.
Less Than Zero - Bret Easton Ellis.

EDIT - Pride and Prejudice and Zombies looks awesome. As soon as I finish book 2 in the Sookie Stackhouse series I'll check it out - Adding to my wishlist so I don't forget.

I have a recommendation for the book "Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise."

I enjoy SciFi/Fantasy novels:

Authors I enjoy are (in no particular order):

Kevin J. Anderson
Jack McDevitt
George R.R. Martin
Robert Jordan
Timothy Zahn
Peter F. Hamilton

I also enjoyed reading the Mr. Moto series by John P. Marquand and the Charlie Chan series by Earl Derr Biggers.

If you like him you should check out Alastair Reynolds. His Revelation Space books are excellent.

Started Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier. Only 20 pages in, but her writing style has me gripped already.

Currently 67 pages into Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. So far it is pretty interesting. Wolfe has a different writing style, don't know how to explain it, very.. abrupt and lots of interjections and ramblings.

I don't know if I'll love it, despite the fact that it's about Ken Kesey.

Just finished One-Dimensional Man by Herbert Marcuse. Parts of it were great, parts of it were a bit out there, especially the semantics. Nevertheless, it still feels important if we want to understand "civilization" as we know it. Give it a try!

Finished Pride & prejudice & zombies. Was pretty good, could probably recomend it for the obvious (fans of classical literature/fans of zombies) people.
I hadn't previously read the original (am familiar with the actual plot) but I doubt it would have affected my enjoyment much.

Going to start this next

Seemed apropos since I won't be marrying trent now, BAHA! HAR! *SNICKER*SNORT* (YES I'M TOTALLY JOKING/BEING SILLY!) grinning smiley

No seriously I've had this in my home library for a while now. I never really read it, but when I caught myself actually using the phrase the other day "I could go anything I just don't know what I want to do" The proverbial light bulb went off and I found it this morning so...SO FAR sounds pretty good.

It doesn't deal with skills or personality, it is based on the premise (and a Harvard study on Happiness) that truely happy people aren't focused on solely on Money, Success, Health or Love. "The only two things sucessful have in common is they know exactly what they want and they felt they were moving toward getting it."

Apparently there is some internal war going on in 98% of (Americans) that keeps them from really knowing what they want and going after it. Most of them are in jobs they keep for survival. The book keys you in on those conflicts, helps you get around them and figure out how to do what you really want to; not the should, would or could of life/vocation/personality and skill sets.

"You feel restless when you can't find the right track. You sense there's some particular work you are meant to be doing. And you're right. Einstein needed to formulate theories of physics, Harriet Tubman needed to guide people to freedom and you need to follow your original vision. As Vartan Gregorian said, "The universe is not going to see someone like you again in the entire history of creation." Each of us is one of a kind. Every living person has a completely original way of looking at the world, and originality ALWAYS needs to express itself" (Kind of reminds me of the forums LOL)

So I'm gonna put my little snout into trying to root out happiness my way grinning smiley I'll keep you posted.

I just finished reading Neuromancer. What an amazing read. I first read his books over 15 years ago so my memories of them had become very hazy and dull over time. It's hard to believe William Gibson wrote it back in the early 1980s. Other than speaking of megabytes about things that we now know require gigabytes and teraflops, the book hasn't really aged at all. The psychological dimensions of the characters were also drawn very well, and the way he writes paints really vivid pictures in my head, just like I'm right there.

That and Snow Crash would make for some damn interesting dark techno sci-fi cinema if anyone ever had the balls to tackle them properly and do the books justice.

Two thumbs up for Neuromancer.
