im re-reading henri charriere's 'papillon' a movie stemmed from it starring steve mcqueen i believe, i havent seen it though. really good biography, even though some of the events in it have been debated as fabrication. it's still a good story. i picked it up after seeing a doc about devil's island.

Night watch was amazing! The movie literally, doesn't begin to show the scope of the story.

Finished The Bell Jar (love it a little more now) and am now re reading Catcher in the rye (cause I think I'm on a big nostalgia trip for some reason)

Anyway, the rest of my fave list, freshly imported from ETS...

Non-fiction:
- Collapse: how societies choose to fail or succeed (Jared Diamond) - *COUGH*think I saw this among some Year Zero banned media*COUGH* Anyway... Important. If you can't be arsed to read it all I recommend the last chapter.
- Unweaving the rainbow (Richard Dawkins) - about how mindblowing everything is. XD
- The selfish gene (Richard Dawkins) - just refreshing the ole genetics... More interesting ideas.
- Conservation (Clive Hambler) - a school book, but with nice points about... gasp... conservation.
- The world without us (Alan Weisman) - juicy subject but also discusses many current ickle problems. I believe ROB recommended it as well. grinning smiley
- Dog stories (James Herriot) - vet life in Yorkshire back in the days, some stories are SAD AS HELL!
- Manchester United ruined my life (Colin Shindler) - football sucks, some footie books / movies don't! smiling smiley
- Go ask Alice (Anonymous) - young girl starts doing drugs. I've heard it may be fictional after all but... :p
- The elegant universe (Brian Greene) - fun with string physics, kidz!!!

Fiction:
- The call of the wild (Jack London) - dawgs... wolves... Canada... <3 Fucking beautiful.
- The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy (Douglas Adams) - several kilos of fun.
- Harry Potter 1-7 (JK Rowling) - genius story-weaving and a cosy universe.
- Pet Sematary (Stephen King) - read this at night in a secluded Norwegian cottage with ghostly sounds like I did.
- Pope Joan (Donna Woolfolk Cross) - there's this legend about a woman pope...
- The green mile (Stephen King) - or the movie... Both sad...
- Journey to the centre of the Earth (Jules Verne) - Cuz that would be cool.
- The shining (Stephen King) - better than the movie, IMO.
- On the beach (Nevil Shute) - *alarm* KIND OF YEAR ZERO-RELATED *alarm* A world waiting to die after a nuke war.
- Ronja, the robber's daughter (Astrid Lindgren) - Wild adventure kiddie story with which I was obsessed at age 4.
- The alchemist (Paulo Coelho) - I dunno, it made me a bit happy. :p
- The brothers Lionheart (Astrid Lindgren) - Adventure kiddie story about DEATH and some other cool stuff.
- Misery (Stephen King) - EWWW.
- Perfume: the story of a murderer (Patrick Süskind) - argh, the movie has taken over my memory completelayyy.
- The da Vinci code (Dan Brown) - beats its movie.
- Trainspotting (Irvine Welsh) - better than movie? *shrug* It made me pine for the movie.
- 1984 (George Orwell) - crimestart!!!!!!!1

Honourary mention:
- Heart-shaped box (Joe Hill) - fairly enjoyable horror novel that MENTIONS TRENT ALL THE GODDAMN TIME! XD

There was a documentary like that on The National Geographic Channel.

[Also "Life After People on the History Channel.]

Edit #2: I was watching the above History Channel show last night and then I was talking to my friend about it and he says, yea, here, and hands me the book. Heh. So now I'm gonna read the book, too.

Catcher in the rye depressed the hell out of me, so after finishing that yesterday, I started Chuck Palahniuk's Choke this morning. Pretty good read so far, just the right amount of lulz.

09/02/08 5:00 PM

I just picked up Chuck Palahniuk's Snuff (Survivor is my favorite of his books so far).

As for recommendations:

Sci-fi/Fantasy - Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman (fun)

Fiction - Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro (dramatic and beautifully written)

Fiction - Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer

Fiction - You Suck - Christopher Moore (made me laugh to myself like a crazy woman)

Sociology - Against Love: A Polemic (BRILLIANT/funny take on "love's" evolution)

Graphic Novel - Blankets - Craig Thompson (worth the 600 pages)

Fiction - Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates - Tom Robbins (the english language at its funniest).

Biology/Science - Sex, Time, and Power - Leonard Shlain (theory of evolution using the perspective of female driven change - yes, I'm a nerd)

General Metaphysics - The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho (it does make you feel happy!)

Poetry - The Prophet - Kahlil Gibran (a classic)

and I could go on and on tongue sticking out smiley

I plan on going to Barnes and Nobles tomorrow and got some nice recommendations from this thread. I really don't read enough.

I would suggest anything by Augusten Burroughs. I'm currently reading Magical Thinking and most of the stories are making me laugh my ass off. It's rare that that happens for me smiling smiley
