The list of first person shooter games is vast, what is your favorite?

05/14/10 2:59 PM

Quake, FTW!

05/14/10 3:50 PM

The Halo series.

05/14/10 5:44 PM

Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Best multiplayer FPS ever, in my humble opinion.

Now as long as we're on FPSes, why not expand to TPSes like resident evil 4 (a masterpiece) or re5 or gears of war, clearly derivitive of re4 and both inferior, but noteworthy nonetheless. re5 had no scares whatsoever which made it inferior.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil on the N64.

As a kid, this game offered me the best gore graphics, a ton of varied and deadly weapons, the best challenge, and it's cheat codes were fun as hell.

Running around "cerebral boring" every enemy I found never ceased to amuse me.

*EDIT*

GoldenEye is an extremely close second. No need to explain why.

I would like to add that Borderlands has been a ton of fun, so much so that it would probably be my favorite shooter in part because of the random looting and it being an RPG........but I have too many fond memories of Turok 2....and I think it was more ground-breaking back then.

I still play Turok and GoldenEye still from time to time.

My memories of Goldeneye are fond, for the most part, but a little skewed by the fact that my friend Bryan was the only one with a N64, and he thus knew the levels inside and out, and would just beeline for the body armor, followed by the best weapon in each given stage. Plus, he knew all of the exploits to take advantage of, like spawn camping the ventilation duct in the bathroom(i think the map was Facility?). If that wasn't bad enough, if you had a rocket/grenade launcher, you could actually just shoot at the duct itself, and the splash damage would go right through and hurt the person inside. Not my idea of fun.

Also, one of our friends always chose Oddjob, which made him a pain in the ass target, but that was offset by another friend who always picked the freaking giant with the top hat, who was not only a huge target, but the entire hat was considered a headshot, iirc.

Bryan was (and is) fiercely competitive at video games, and is the type whose enjoyment of the gaming experience hinges on whether or not he wins. At least we had a chance in games like Goldeneye and Starfox; we weren't always so lucky, like when we played Mario Kart and he consistently pulled shit like this.

Back on topic, though Goldeneye was a lot of fun, my favorite FPS back then was Quake; specifically, a user made mod called FvF(Future vs. Fantasy). For a fan made mod, it was awesome, and the first class-based MP FPS i ever played(earliest one i know of, for that matter; this was years before the first Team Fortress dropped).

My absolute favourites are linked in terms of the teams and personnel that made them.

- Goldeneye (WHOA I BET YOU DIDN'T SEE THAT ONE COMING!)

- The timesplitters series. The gameplay is solid, fun and the amount of imagination and humour in this series is great. That's just for starters. It's a shame the 4th one has been left in limbo, hopefully all will be sorted out soon.

I don't play that many FPS games, I'm more of a stealth-action guy. But I fucking love Aliens vs. Predator 2 on the PC.

no way halo games are way overhyped. The campaigns usually suck and I play them solely for multiplayer, which can be mimicked in nearly every other fps but just looking slightly different.
Compare to something with a 20-hour campaign centered on actual exploration instead of missions, like metroid prime, and you have a shooter that can actually be appreciated by REAL hardcore gamers instead of all the Microsoft fanboys who call themselves hardcore.

05/17/10 3:44 PM

Deus Ex: The Conspiracy

05/17/10 8:16 PM

fuck yeah F.E.A.R. series.

05/18/10 2:19 AM

Any "best FPS discussion" in incomplete without Painkiller (i mean 1st game in series and BooH expansion. Overdose and Resurrection are less good).

05/18/10 2:13 AM

Tribes for multiplayer (Battlefield 2 and Quake get honorable mentions)
Modern Warfare 1 for single player

Halo has an incredible story. The game as a trilogy and as an icon has definitely been overblown proportionally, but the first game really had a incredible storyline and campaign. While the two sequels, and most of the recent sequels, aren't as great, I still think the series as a whole has a LOT to offer. And I think people like you, Identity, just say its a 'cliche' game and label it because everyone else is labeling it awesome. So who wins?

I was dogging on Reach a lot in the Halo: Reach thread, and I recently played it and I like it a lot. All I had to do was give it a chance.

Same with most FPS games.

I'm not saying I am hordcore cuz I don't like halo single player, just cuz i'm sick of all the halo fanboys who diss all other fps franchises, some
of which are better in some respects, and then call themseves hardcore though they don't appreciate other FPSes.

I'm not saying I hate halo, it's campaigns just aren't as good IMHO as others, multiplayer is great, but... Know what... Just look at my other post.

I only play Halo in offline co-op, Its the only way I can really enjoy the game.

However, Half-Life 2 will always be my favorite FPS gameplay wise.
Counter-Strike: Source for the adrenaline rush
F.E.A.R 1 and 2 for the Mindfuck factor
and Quake for the good ole' Nine Inch Nails

In other news, since I love wii fpses, looking forward to the totally-not-mediocre sequel to the mediocre first effort, the conduit. Heard the devs are gonna fix like 82.49604% of the issues that plagued the original.
I'd like to believe that, but does high voltage software really have it in them to fix all the issues that their original FPS offering had? I hope so, a decent FPS that isn't developed by Nintendo for their console would be sick.

05/19/10 7:35 PM

I think you should try some of my favorite FPS games, identity, because I only love real good story based FPS games too.

Let me list the ones I've played and beat. And in most cases, played again and beat again. These are the FPS games I spent LOTS of time with, and really fell in love with each one, so this is my list of gold.. if you care. winking smiley

Deus Ex: The Conspiracy, as mentioned above.. Also the sequel is good too I'm sure (own it but haven't played)
Red Faction (the original game. 2 was terrible, don't bother playing it. guerrilla is cool, but i haven't played it)
Perfect Dark - this game was Goldeneye007's little brother, and kicked much more ass in my opinion. The story drove this game so well, and the multiplayer was ridiculously fun too. I downloaded it to my xbox and its still classic.
Killer 7 (one of the coolest games ever, especially fps)
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Second Sight
Half-Life (was cool, but for some reason I didn't find any replay value)
somebody mentioned Timesplitters. The story was ok, I had more fun with multiplayer.

And of course, the original Halo, which you seem to be less satisfied with ... I'll admit, I didn't see much to the Halo series (as you didn't) but upon playing the campgains, I found a higher love. Let me also take this moment to say that the story in Halo one is really good; Halo 2, 3, and ODST were terrible. But Reach is going to be awesome.

And more recently, games that I'm playing that I haven't beaten yet... Fallout3 [is absolutely breathtaking], Battlefield BC2 [its okay], AVP [really cool, but sometimes bland], Mass Effect, and finally, one that I think will be on my top list of all time best fps games once I finish it: Dead Space.

Hope that helps. I have to end this unnecessarily long post by saying that I enjoy games a hundred times better when the story is good, so I'm not arguing game vs game vs game, just arguing that a game without a good plot is as dead to me as goldeneye became in its dying days. which BY THE WAY forgot to mention, goldeneye 007 is an awesome classic.

OK i'll leave

I do enjoy the online multiplayer, but even more so I know exactly what you mean. co-op or even just getting your friends together for a LAN to play Halo is much more satisfying and fun. Halo3 online, for example, has its moments of fun, but is always, ALWAYS repetitive.

ChaseNine, don't you think that Psi-Ops and Second Sight aren't FPS - there's no first-person view there, as far as i remember. This is why, say, Gears Of War doesn't get mention here.

Wait, so you're calling someone out for not being a "real hardcore" gamer because of their favorite FPS and then claim not to be a "hardcore gamer?" All your arguments scream pretentious douche (which in terms of gaming means "Hardcore Gamer" ) and all unprovoked. You don't see me here telling you why your favorite FPSs are shit.

Also, your opinions don't dictate shit. All your arguments are your opinions, thinking that for some reason we're gonna care. Even if it's an opinion shared by a collective, it's still an opinion.

Furthermore, you seem to think that every Halo fan does the exact same things in dissing all other FPSs when the same can be said for any fan of any FPS series. Infact, Halo gets dissed by more obscure FPS fanboys than any other FPS; and therefore you fall under your own category of fanboys who hate an FPS and "pretend to be hardcore" gamers.

The fact is, I have not dissed any FPS in here at all, and you're the one who randomly started dissing Halo and Halo fanboys. Psychological projection much?

And, in conclusion, I respect your opinion, but feel that you should grow up and be more mature about such.

Don't feed trolls. My opinion: Halo may be alright, but i'm on PC, i don't care.

On the other hand, Prey is a badass shooter. From every possible perspective.
