Okay so I couldn't see a half-life thread anywhere, which kinda shocked me, due to the fact that it is a really high rated game.

I have been playing Half-Life since it's original release in 1998, I absolutely loved it, including it's three expansions packs (Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Decay).

Half-Life 2 blew me away with it's twist in story line, I felt like the most recent HL games (hl2, hl2e1, hl2e2) are almost like watching an interactive movie - there is no cut scenes, yet you still get a really good perspective as to what is going on around you.

The expansion of the HL world with games like Portal was just awesome, even though there was no significant link between the games, just the fact that they mention Black Mesa in the game was pretty cool.

I cannot wait until they finally release Half-Life 2 Episode 3.

To anyone who hasn't played any of the HL games, I really recommend you do. If you are keen to buy one of the games, start with "Half-Life: Source". It is a remake of the original game, but with the more modern engine - although it is not up to HL2 standards, you will get a better gaming experience if graphics mean a lot to you.

However, nothing will ever beat the original Half-Life.

Gordon Freeman 4 President.

It is a great game. The only title I picked up I didn't like was Half Life 2 for xbox (original) but it is much, much, better on the PC. Great story, great graphics, great guns, just the way I like it.

11/23/08 11:20 AM

I only ever play Half-Life on the PC, that is the way it is meant to be winking smiley

11/24/08 12:14 AM

I don't think you can anymore, but I picked it up for 98 cents this weekend on Steam.

That is a god damn steal, I remember playing this game years ago and it still has the same impact on me today. Incredibly good.

I've never stopped playing the HL series ever since it came out...crazy.

I'm going to finish it again once the Black Mesa mod comes around. I've also played a lot of mods for it, like Azure Sheep , Point of View, Poke 646, They Hunger and Sven-Coop (great in multiplayer). Unfortunately, there's no sign that Episode 3 will appear next year.

Are you referring to the original half-life game? because almost all half-life games can be downloaded directly from steam - like you said.

Buying them second hand is always a bit risky if you are going to be using through steam, because you can't register the same serial key twice - watch for scammers!

No I meant I don't think you can buy it for 98 cents anymore, they'll always be up on Steam. Sorry, I should have clarified myself a bit more.

Can't wait for Black Mesa: Source. I've put off playing HL: Source since I want to play a proper remake. If for some strange reason BS: S fails, THEN I'll load up HS: S.

In general, I love Half-Life to bits. Some people I know said the original game was scary as hell - myself, I didn't it all that scary but it certainly has its own style of sci-fi + suspense.

It would be great to have something more to play, like story offshoots for example. Even though he is The One Free Man, maybe Gordon Freeman's not the only person going around seeing weird shit and then blowing it up (even though he might be the only theoretical physicist doing that). City 17 is a big place, but it's still just a blip on the map. What's going on on the other side of the world? Is there a City 18? No, wait, is there a City 1?

I was addicted to playing half-life2 for a couple of years, I still dream about it sometimes. I play hldm occasionally which is a lot of fun after years of playing. Played L4D recently, that was ok but there really is no other fps for me after playing HL2 and I've tried a few.

Yeah, really looking forward to Black Mesa: Source

I found a site that is definitely good reading, it explains and outlines the entire Half-Life saga from before the first game to present. I was amazed at how much I didn't know, it also shows significant links between Half-Life and Portal, confirming that they are indeed part of the same story, hopefully we will see more links between them in the future.

God... I cannot wait for HL2:EP.3... The end of EP 2, just killed me, and it left me wanting SO MUCH MORE!!! I think that the portal gun or something like it will be aboard the the Borealis.. I cant wait to see how valve wraps up this phenomenal trilogy

Playing this game alone always scared the shit out of me. It's the creepy noises.

Half-Life 2 is one of the greatest games ever, IMO.

I'll never forget my first time playing through Ravenholm... I got there round midnight, and it scared the living shit outta me. To this day, I still dont care much for that level... I think it's worse then Doom 3

I'm just gonna put it out there: the orange box is the greatest gaming compilation of all time. Hl1 blew me away and hl2 continues to live up to it's title. However, portal is my favorite valve title to date! But with out Black Mesa there is no Aperture Science!

01/05/09 12:11 AM

one of the all time best. i find it hard to believe that an overrated shitfest known as halo gets the multiplayer/campaign attention it gets. HL is a much better alien/supernatural story.

been playing since the original release in '98, been playing counter strike since 2000.

easily one of the all time best.

Yeah Valve kicks ass.

I love all the episodes and the first one.
Even though Half-Life 2 hit it more home.

Combine is coming.

Half-Life is the shit. I used to spend hours playing it along with dozens of mods and expansions back in the day (and still do on occasion).

All great mods. Heh, I'm actually playing Azure Sheep over again now. They Hunger was the only one I ever played that made me shit mah pants and turn off the computer.

and Black Mesa Source is coming out real soon. its an HL2 mod that is a complete remake of HL1 using HL2 graphics and physics and the new source engine!!!

Half-Life series FTW
every game in the series is top-notch and a sure contender for best game of all time. As for the little known Half-Life 1 expansion Decay (which was originally only available on the PS2 release of HL1) its actually been ported to the PC for anyone who's interested. You have to have a game with the GoldSrc engine installed on your computer though.

Ravenholm is my favorite part of HL2. I always make my husband play through it though, because I like to kinda take it all in (plus it freaks me out!)

Just replaying HL2, this time on the xbox. HL2DM is my fave multiplayer part of the HL universe; opposing force my favourite single player. Disappointed that the xbox portal version doesn't have the challenges that the PC one does.

Indeed it really feels like an interactive movie, it's what makes the storytelling so darn good. For me, HL 2 is the best FPS-series ever released. Nothing can beat it but it exists other great games aswell, of course.

Cannot wait either. What about them making it Half Life 3 instead? Either way it's going to kick ass on every aspect! smiling smiley

When the hell is Episode 3 coming out? I wanna kill me some more Combine.

So did anyone else see the crazy update on Portal which included hidden clues?

I have to admit it reminds me a bit of YZ but that could just be because I've had it on my mind for the past month Lol.

HL2 is ^currently^ doing the same thing to me. The first game creeped me out but I liked it. This one is just making me sick. I really hope to finish it sometime, someday... but I don't know.

Team Fortress 2 is ok, but not my style.

Portal, however, is WHERE IT IS AT! I love this game. Its much more lighthearted than HL2, (and HL1 for that matter) and while I'm REALLY not normally attracted to the lighter softer type games, I find myself strangely in love with Portal compared to HL2 which, at the moment, I despise. It's a really great game too, thats why I know one day I'll finish it. But I'm not in the mood for HL I guess. Not atm.

I will return soon, maybe after I finish HL2 and the following Episodes. One day.

This is the sequence that made me stop playing HL2, for the time being. To be honest, I never have had to stop a game or movie from something like this. But going through some hard emotional shit in my life... Ravenholm just came at the wrong time for me. I'll eventually get over it and play through the game... but not now I don't think.

Plus I'm getting new games soon, so idk what I'll have time for anyways.

I find the sudden uncontrollable need for cake.

I really could've done without the announcement for Portal 2 to be honest even though i did like the first one, I'd just much rather have heard about Episode 3 or HL3.... oiiiii

Valve really shot themselves in the foot with this episodic shit.
