Lost Odyssey

So, I picked this game up for $20. It's 4 discs long, and is made by the guys that worked on Final Fantasy (music) and Dragonball Z 9 (art).

I know it's criticized for old school jrpg gameplay...but so far, I think it kicks ass.

Anyone else try it?

GREAT game!

I put over 80 hours into this one with a friend, and enjoyed every second of it. Who cares if its old school jrpg? Just like you said, it kicks ass...thats all that matters. I especially love Kaim's memories that you read from time to time. They are very well written and some are actually very moving. The graphics are on point, and the story in general is great. I hope you enjoy it!!

I've been meaning to pick this one up forever... I happen to enjoy the old-school JRPG formula and have been disappointed with all the FF since X, so I think it will probably be right up my alley.

I got to, I think Disc 4, but I never got to finishing it. It is definitely a kickass game. Kaim looks like a real badass and not some fairy like in FF games. I don't read his memories. I think that's too much for me to delve into. When I play the game again I might have to restart it and kill every little creature because I lack XP and it got hard to beat some enemies.

I feel the same way about the new final fantasies. The commercials for this game looked bad ass, i might have to rent it at some point

It's a great game. I love the story and how fleshed out the characters all are. I only got to disc 2, though. I need to pick that game up again...

Well, thanks to this thread I finally quit procrastinating and went out and bought this sucker yesterday. I've played up to the point where you fist arrive at Grand Staff... so far so good. I'm digging the 'dreams' and the battle system. The only gripe I have is with Jensen... why oh why does every RPG have to have the 'annoying' character? I mean, I can deal with the moody emo main character, the tough girl who wants him to love her and a gaggle of other cliches, but why must I always suffer the obnoxious one? Only now that voice acting is so prevalent in modern RPGs has it really become an annoyance to me...

It's funny how many sites panned it when it originally came out (it may be a derivative of FF but maybe that's because it was headed by the man who created that franchise) but have come crawling back since it's still the best jrpg released this gen so far. So many highly anticipated games in this genre have either bombed or just aren't that great this generation and western rpgs (western games in general) are leaving their eastern counterparts in the dust.

The reviews were completely unfair.

The main complaints in most reviews:

1. long loading times. --this turned out to be an issue with certain review copies, cause the loading times are certainly nowhere near the times listed in some reviews.

2. It's a japanese rpg that doesn't innovate, so we're just going to say it's a great game if you like jprg's, but otherwise, we're going to slap a 7.5 on it cause it doesn't innovate.

Personally, I say that game "innovation" is far, far overrated. Bioshock, was an great, great game, but was mainly innovative in it's execution and art/story/execution.

Instead of coming up with "clever innovative spins" on tried and true gaming conventions, I'd prefer that they just come up with a great game with great art and story.

Anyway, the game actually does innovate some - the "ring" battle system and the implementation of those "dreams" ...I've never thought that the reading in a videogame was so cool. Sure there are a few cliche's and problems, but overall, this is a great game. Really, deserving of a 8.5-9.5. somewhere in that range imo. I'd probably give it a 9 so far, mainly because the main villian so far is looking a bit predictable. Otherwise, I've enjoyed the game. I can't really give it an entire rating yet though...I'm only about 4 or 5 hours into it.

So, anyway, this game deserved a 9.0 or 9.5 in my opinion. It's not perfect by any means,

I'm with you on the around 9 scale.

I love that it rewards your exploration... I'm a collector whore so walking around a corner and always finding something to pick up is actually very rewarding for me... I like that they didn't add any superfluous areas, as of yet anyway. The ring system is great, but really it just kind of seems akin to the materia system from FF7, combining two things to create a new upgraded version, etc. The timing aspect of the rings in combat is satisfying too, although I can't say its the first time I've had to time my button presses during a turn-based RPG (hell even the Mario RPGs have this as a standard mechanic)... Overall though the whole is more than the sum of its parts for me. No, it doesn't necessarily innovate but everything is solid, well executed and FUN. Like I said earlier I actually prefer the old-school JRPG approach, so this 'shortcoming' of the game is actually a plus to me.

I have been surprised with how the difficulty suddenly ramps up when I fight a boss though. I've only fought two so far, but good god, each one kicked my ass numerous times before I was able to best them. It's kind of shocking to be breezing through the random encounters then get bent right the fuck over by a boss. And I've been grinding too, by the time I got to the second boss I was already at level 18...

Anyway, great game... I'm really enjoying it.

Same situation here. That freaking worm at "grand staff" keeps kicking my ass over and over and I'm a level 17. I'm gonna go grind till I'm level 19 or 20 and come back I guess.

Oh just wait... the real kick in the teeth with the worm is that after you beat him you gain no xp!

I think Lost Odyssey is a great game. I didn't have problems with load times or anything like that. I spent a lot of time playing it and really enjoyed it. I wonder if they're going to make another one...

They do intend for it to be a series. However, they have announced no new entries in the series yet. Sales were decent, although not great.

They've spent more time milking "blue dragon". However the studio is about to announce a new game...no one knows what it is though. Apparently, the new game is nearly done.
