Only problem is, I don't have any controllers yet! Any suggestions on some classic games from our childhoods?

Buying a second hand NES is a lot cheaper than buying a Wii, if he doesn't already own one, and i'd be willing to bet you can buy most common NES carts on eBay for about the same price as the Virtual Console downloads, if not less. That said, i second all of these choices, as well as the aforementioned Metroid, SMB3 and TMNT 2, and add a few of my own: Star Tropics Gradius/Lifeforce (Mike Tyson's) Punch Out Double Dragon 2 Battletoads Blaster Master Fair warning: the last two on the list are HAAAARD! I beat them both when i was a kid, but don't know if i'd have the skill/patience to do it again today...

Well, it wasn't that expensive, was only £25 delivered, this was for the console only, and it's mint & has a brand new 72 pin connector. I use my SNES power supply, and the AV cables are just standard RCA cables. £5 for the control pad (which still hasn't arrived!) So came to less then the RRP of a new release for a PS3 or 360 game A mate of mine was having a clear out and gave me a load of games for free: Castlevania Castlevania: Simons Quest Castlevania: Dracula's Curse Solar Jetman Double Dragon II Double Dragon III Tetris Mega Man Mega Man IV Super Mario Bros Top Gun Marble Madness Plus, it's more nostalgic, seriously haven't played one since about 1994 haha.
