The great thing about Tool (and NIN) is that if you have the entire discography and give it a listen, you can so easily pick apart how they've evolved as a band and where they decided to take the music.
Compare say, PHM -> Fragile, and Opiate -> 10k Days, and the amount they've grown as a band is quite staggering.
They started off raw, full of energy, and then grew into this super artsy fartsy band w/o losing their identity
There's a TON of bands out there that sound exactly the same (yes weezer/green day/foo fighters, I'm lookin RIGHT AT YOU) their entire careers.
It would probably also explain why Tool is going on their 17th year, never stronger, and NIN is still selling out shows 20 years after PHM.
